Venus Venus has been known since prehistoric times and the planet is named after Venus, the Roman goddess of love. It is the second-closest planet to the Sun and it`s often called Earth's "sister planet," because the two are similar in size, gravity, and bulk composition. Because of these similarities, it was thought that Venus might even have life. Venus is also called the Morning star or the Evening star, because it reaches its brightness shortly before sunrise or shortly after sunset. It is the brightest object in the sky except for the Sun and the Moon. During the last few years the scientists have found that Venus and Earth are very different. It has no oceans and is surrounded by a heavy atmosphere composed mainly of carbon dioxide with virtually no water vapor. There are strong winds at the cloud tops but winds at the surface are very slow, no more than a few kilometers per hour. The surface of Venus retains a constant
front of me. It was very wet because of the heavy rain. I tried to kill the monster that killed my friend but I couldn’t – the gun didn’t work. The monster got angry now and he wanted to kill me. I started to run. I felt how my legs started to get heavier and heavier. I got slower and slower. I was really frightened and I was shaking all over my body. Cold sweat covered my body. I layed on the ground again and closed my eyes. I knew that I will die. When I opened my eyes I saw brightness. I looked around – it was my room, my bed. I ran to the window and I saw a rainbow. The colors were right and beautiful. I touched my face. It was wet. My body was covered in cold sweat. The world wasn’t black and white anymore. It was colorful again! I understood that it was only just a dream.
The CWT method [35] is used to decompose the pilled fabric image with six orientations at different scales and reconstruct fabric background texture and pilling sub-images. An energy analysis method is, at that time, used to search for an 18 optimum image decomposition scale and to dynamically discriminate pilling image from noise, fabric texture, fabric surface unevenness and brightness variation in the pilled fabric image. In Figure 18 a 3D mesh plot of WoolMark® SM50 Grade 1 woven fabric is shown, taken by [34]. Using the proposed method it is possible to identify pilling information over a fused and smoothed background of gray value zero at different scales. The positive and negative maximum gray values of the reconstructed detail image represent the highest point of pilling and the deepest point of the pilling shadow respectively. FIGURE 18

gets finer as an object recedes. Bruce & Green (1990) argue that Gibson's concept of affordances is most powerful and useful in the context of visually guided behaviour, as observed in insects. For example, objects aren't judged in complete isolation, and the optic array commonly contains far more information than is associated with a single stimulus. The ability to perceive the object as unchanging, despite changes in the sensory information (size, shape, colour, brightness or location) that reaches the eye is called 2 05144023 perceptual constancy. And perceptual constancies tell us that visual information from the retinal image is sketchy and incomplete, and that the visual information has to travel beyond the retinal image in order to be more complete. For this reason, Gregory argues that perception must be an indirect process involving a

with a tiny camera, which captures images that the belt-pack video processor translates into patterns of light and dark, like the "pixelized image we see on a stadium scoreboard," said Jessy D. Dorn, a research scientist at Second Sight Medical Products, which produces the device, collaborating with the Department of Energy. (Other research teams are developing similar devices.) The video processor directs each electrode to transmit signals representing an object's contours, brightness and contrast, which pulse along optic neurons into the brain. Currently, "it's a very crude image," Dr. Dorn said, because the implant has only 60 electrodes; many people see flashes or patches of light. Brian Mech, Second Sight's vice president for business development, said the company was seeking federal approval to market the 60-electrode version, which would cost up to $100,000 and might be covered by insurance. Also planned are 200- and 1,000-electrode versions; the

at current levels (but also see logistic growth). o Many responses of living beings to stimuli, including human perception, are logarithmic responses, which are the inverse of exponential responses; the loudness and frequency of sound are perceived logarithmically, even with very faint stimulus, within the limits of perception. This is the reason that exponentially increasing the brightness of visual stimuli is perceived by humans as a smooth (linear) increase, rather than an exponential increase. This has survival value. Generally it is important for the organisms to respond to stimuli in a wide range of levels, from very low levels, to very high levels, while the accuracy of the estimation of differences at high levels of stimulus is much less important for survival. http://www

Woosley studies some of the most powerful explosions since the birth of the universe: supernovae, the violent deaths of stars. The universe twinkles with these cataclysms. They happen every second or so, usually in some unimaginably remote galaxy, blazing as bright as hundreds of billions of stars and creating a fireball that expands and cools for months. We're lucky that they rarely strike close to home. The last supernova in our own galaxy exploded in 1604, rivaling Jupiter's brightness in the night sky and deeply impressing Johannes Kepler, the pioneering astronomer. A nearby supernova--within a few light-years--would bathe the Earth in lethal radiation. Yet the legacy of supernovas is as close as our own bodies. The carbon in our cells, the oxygen in the air, the silicon in rocks and computer chips, the iron in our blood and our machines--just about every atom heavier than hydrogen and helium--was forged inside ancient stars and strewn

two secondary beams will be centered on land. The three spots are deliberately offset approximately 20 micro with respect to each other. Two additional detectors are placed alongside the main quadrant detector in order to pick up these subsidiary beams. If the three beams are on track, then the two subsidiary photodetectors have equal amounts of light and will be quite bright because they are only tracking on land. The central beam will be reduced in brightness because it is tracking on both land and pits. However, if the optical head is off track, then the center spot gets more light (because there are fewer pits off track) and the side detectors will be misbalanced. [vaata | 28. The (daily) movement of the Sun. The movement and phases of the moon. The movement of the planets. There is no reason to think that the Earth is itself a planet. It is difficult to distinguish start and planets with merely naked-eye observation. Unlike stars, planets vary substantially in brightness at times. Stars remain, relative to one another, at fixed positions while planets change positions. Sometimes planets make a backward movement (the retrograde motion). her stability and find happiness with her kids. She succeeds. Kitty is coming for a visit to Dolly's estate. Levin says he will make himself unavailable, since he is trying desperately to forget Kitty. Yet once Kitty arrives, Levin spots her in her carriage and their eyes meet. He realizes he still loves her. "He could not be mistaken. There were no other eyes like those in the world. There was only one creature in the world who could concentrate for him all the brightness and meaning of life. It was she. It was Kitty." Levin again realizes his most sincere feelings are stemming from his heart, not his brain. There is no time to analyze; his heart has told him what he needs to do. Incidentally, right before he sees Kitty, Levin meets a young married couple who are very much in love. He realizes that the harmony and synchronicity they share is exactly what he is missing in his life. Not coincidentally, this is what he anticipates with Kitty. Chapters 12-23

Petersburg, January 1909 conducted by Alexander Glazunov. The texture of the symphony is mostly homophonic. Vocal in character, memorable themes are without any folksong inflections, yet all music written by a national composer cannot be anything but national. Lemba’s thoughts are far from tragedy and deep meditation. The beauty of his thoughts as a whole and their plasticity reveals the classicalism of Lemba’s conception, hence the leading idea is transformed from gloom to brightness and power. In all Estonian music of those years some influences of the classical heritage were obvious. This was the historical inheritance as the place from which every artist was at least starting. Lemba’s style had sprung out of his early ideals and was not subject to any particular change during the next decade. Yet in the Twenties and Thirties some features from Estonian folk music are used intentionally as in his opera Kalmuneid (The Maiden
plan to ride to Seattle with Edward Cullen. Not that I was going to tell him. "Dad, do you know a place called Goat Rocks or something like that? I think it's south of Mount Rainier," I asked casually. "Yeah -- why?" I shrugged. "Some kids were talking about camping there." "It's not a very good place for camping." He sounded surprised. "Too many bears. Most people go there during the hunting season." "Oh," I murmured. "Maybe I got the name wrong." I meant to sleep in, but an unusual brightness woke me. I opened my eyes to see a clear yellow light streaming through my window. I couldn't believe it. I hurried to the window to check, and sure enough, there was the sun. It was in the wrong place in the sky, too low, and it didn't seem to be as close as it should be, but it was definitely the sun. Clouds ringed the horizon, but a large patch of blue was visible in the middle. I lingered by the window as long as I could, afraid that if I left the blue would disappear again.
