Marilyn Monroe

[15] In Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Monroe's turn as gold-digging showgirl Lorelei Lee won her rave reviews,[25] and the scene where she sang "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" has inspired the likes of Anna Nicole Smith, Madonna,[26] Kylie Minogue,[27] and Geri Halliwell. In the Los Angeles premiere of the film, Monroe and co-star Jane Russell pressed their foot- and handprints in the cement in the forecourt of Grauman's Chinese Theatre. In How to Marry a Millionaire, Monroe was teamed up with Lauren Bacall and Betty Grable. She played a short-sighted dumb blonde, and though the role was stereotypical, critics took note of her comedic timing.[28] Her next two films, the western River of No Return and the musical There's No Business Like Show Business, were not successful. Monroe eventually got tired of the roles that Zanuck assigned her. After

English literature from the Baroque to the Romanticism

Hesperides. The beginning of this book of poems expressed clear defiance regarding the execution of the king that year. Cowley was a well-known poet of the time, whose works gathered a lot of popularity during his lifetime. (Coursebook, pp. 38-48) 6. The Caroline "beauty of holiness". The Caroline “beauty of holiness” regarded the profoundness of Caroline piety and its beauty. In the context of the Caroline era, the sermon was perhaps comparable to the theatre, in terms of the attention it received from the public. The most important poet whose creation carried heavy themes of piety was George Herbert. His poetry is considered to be the monument to “beauty of holiness”, that practice of the liturgy with good order and ritual which was the essence of the king’s religious policy and the object of loathing by his Puritan opponents. Herbert gives praise to the things that the Puritans wished to do away with. For example, he emphasizes the

ESTONIAN SYMPHONIC MUSIC. THE FIRST CENTURY 1896-1996.

recognisable value-judgement core: it may be comprehensible either semantically or absolutely. We must not forget that all change and transition in Estonian symphonism, in whatever period, never dominated all the composers. Perseverance, poise and conservatism1 have shown, usually later than sooner, that all is not gold that glitters from afar, and chasing “fresh-isms” may prove to be a naïve and infantile stimulation. “Concrete” music, instrumental (absurdist) theatre, “happenings” – such affairs do not, in my opinion, illustrate an exceptional talent, but rather feebleness. One of the great absurdities seems to be the fusion of many antagonistic styles, methodologies and languages in one composition: all becomes equally hazy and flat. Remembering the beginning of the 1960s, when the “new wave” of Modernism had arrived on my doorstep, I have to note some points that are still relevant today.
