The area is 45,227 square kilometres of which more than 4,000 square kilometres are made up by islands and islets (over 1,000); there are more than 1,400 lakes that form nearly 5% of the total area. More than 40% of the entire area is woodland. The country is flat; the average elevation is 50 metres above sea level. The highest peak, Suur Munamägi rises to only 317 metres.
