Marco Pololt pärinevad reisimärkmed 13. sajandi Keskmise riigi aedadest, koos huvi tõusuga hiina tarbekunsti vastu arenes ka huvi arhitektuuri ja aianduse vastu. Ka inglise maastikulise stiili rajajad toetusid William Chambers'i avaldatud uurimusele "On Oriental Gardening". Hiina filosoofiat on oluline tunda selleks, et mõista nende aedu. Traditsioonilises Hiinas mängis filosoofia väga tähtsat rolli, eriti isiksuse moraalses kasvatuses. Vanas Hiinas on esinenud kolm põhilist usundit: taoism, konfutsionism ja budism, mis kõik on teatud määral mõjutanud hiina kultuuri ja filosoofiat, sellega koos ka suhtumist maastikku ja aiakujundusse.
