One day after finishing their food, some boys including Oliver decide to cast lots and whoever loses has to go and ask for more food. Oliver loses and he goes to ask, but gets denied and punished for asking for more food. Next day, an advertisement was put up claiming that whoever takes Oliver from the workhouse will also get 5 pounds for taking him. He was taken to work by mister Sowerberry, the parish undertaker. He has to help Sowerberry around the house and such, but later on he gets a more serious job. There was one more boy, Noah, working for Sowerberry, and he couldn’t take Oliver.

Lord Henry himself is a fine example of an upperclass gentleman. His day mostly consist of elegant dinners with the London's elite and attending shows, operas etc. He's trying to make Dorian like him, while Basil Hallward, the artist who painted the portrait of Dorian told him not to. Basil seemed to have an affection for Dorian, making him jealous when Dorian spends time with lord Henry.

The december uprising happened 10 years prior to the book, so Pushkin could have been inspired by the way authority could be challenged by the lower people. The fact that Lizaveta comes out as the strongest character could be significant? Maybe the fact that Herman is German and was described as having 'the profile of Napoleon' could suggest that the relationship between the countess and Hermann reflects that of different countries during the time?
