Modemi erikujuks on akkustiline sidesti (acoustic coupler), mille abil digitaalsignaalid muundatakse akustiliste helide jadaks, mis võetakse vastu telefoniaparaadi mikrofoniga ja vastuvõtuploolel muundatakse kuularikapsli kaudu uuesti digitaalseteks.
