1. Ernst Julius Öpik was born in Oct. 23 1893 in Kunda, Estonia. He was a noted Estonian astronomer and astrophysicst. He went to University of Moscow to specialize in the study of minor bodies, such as asteroids, comets, andmeteors. He completed his doctorate at the University of Tartu. 2. After 4 years at Moscow Observatory he became Director of the Astronomy Department. From 1921-1944 he was an Associate Professor at Tartu University, and from 1930-34 visiting scientist at Harvard University. 3. Öpik was one of the most outstanding astrophysicists of his generation, with wide- ranging interests in the physical sciences. Choices after secondary school Every abiturient is gacing with big decision what do to next. Should student go to university, vocational school or to the work after secondary scool. It is big step in their life and ther is no right answer for them. Choosing the university menas thaht you have to study atleast 3 more years and usually undergrad have to work at the same time for living. Monument to Gustav II Adolf In 1632, King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden, then at the war camp near Nürnburg, signed the charter to found Tartu University, which was also named Academia Gustaviana in his honour. The memorial statue to King Gustav II Adolf (1594-1632) stood next to the main building of the university from 1928, until 1950, when it was removed by the Soviet occupation forces. With Swedish assistance, it was repaired and re-mounted 42 years later, in 1992. The King of Sweden was present both at the original and the re-opening of the monument. Choices after secondary school There are lots of choices after secondary school. The main question is, which is better to do - to work or go to university. Both options give many advantages. Firstly, many young people couldn't choose the subject that they are likely to learn. Working can show if there are any of professions you're good at, as it will improve your interest in certain occupations. On the other hand, it is better not to let years between studies. Researches have shown that students, who have worked for few years after secondary school, can't concentrate on their lessons as much as those whose first choice was university.
