Estonia

We have four seasons in Estonia. The air is very humid and it rains quite often, especially in spring and autumn. We usually have long winters and plenty of snow, but sometimes we haven't even had snow. Summers are is mostly warm and beautiful in Estonia. Estonia is well known for it's amazing countryside. We don't have any big mountains, but we do have over a thousand islands and over a thousand lakes that are worth seeing. One fifth of Estonia is covered by wetlands and almost one forth of the territory is forested. We also have four spectacular national parks and more than 50 nature reserves. The capital of Estonia is Tallinn. Tallinn is best known for it's old town. There are many churches, medieval buildings, the Town city Hhall and it's all bounded by the town wall and gatetowers. The national symbol of Estonia is a blue, black and white striped flag and the national emblems are a cornflower and a chimney swallow.

The sky over Estonia is cloudy for about half the year, and the hilly southeast region experiences up to 750 mm of precipitation due to Estonia's maritime climate. Nature While seven thousand rivers and streams carry rainwater to the sea, bogs and wooded swamplands of different types cover over one fifth of the country -- a world index topped only by the northern neighbour, Finland. Various kinds of forests comprise slightly under half of Estonia's territory. Wetlands, together with primeval forests, represent preserved communities which have for the most part been destroyed in Europe. More than 1000 lakes (5 per cent of the Estonian territory) dot the countryside, which is relatively flat -- almost two thirds of the territory lies less than 50 m above sea level. The highest point is Suur Munamägi, 317 m above sea level, in the southeast of the country. Estonia is the home of several mammals as well as plant species that are extinct or

The flag became associated with Estonian nationalism and was used as the national flag when the Declaration of Independence was issued in 1918. During occupations, the flag has been banned several times. In a good, snowy winter, the Estonians' favourite leisure activity is probably skiing. In spring, Estonians often leave the cities for the weekends. Many families have a cottage in the countryside. As approximately half of Estonia is covered with woodlands and wetlands, going for long walks in the wild is also very popular among Estonians. Since a forest is seldom farther away than a half-an-hour's drive, people often go there for a mushroom hunt, to watch the beautiful wildlife or just for a relaxing walk. Regardless of their age or whether they live in a city or the countryside, an important weekend ritual for many Estonians is the Saturday sauna. Christmas time is the most important holiday celebrated in Estonia. Like in other Nordic

The Endla Nature Reserve in Central Estonia is an uninhabited wetland covered in a variety of vegetation and fauna. It covers seven ancient bogs, zix slow- flowing rivers, five shallow lakes and over 30 springs. Pärnumaa means sun, sean and holidays. Pärnu is the summer capital of Estonia. The best place to see marshes is in the Soomaa National Park in Western Estonia. Soomaa indeed means "Bogland" in Estonian and impressive bogs cover the majority of the park with the thickness of the peat layer reaching up to 7 metres in some places. At least 10 per cent of the Estonian territory is subject to the environment protection. The most important protection areas are resting and recreation areas for migratory birds. Mainly seashore wetlands and chaste woodland and wetland areas. The preservation of traditional cultural landscapes is important as well. 5 History To the Nineteenth Century The Estonians settled in their present territory before the Christian era. Mangrove trees have complex breathing roots above the surface of the organically rich and oxygen-depleted muds in which they live. Oil may block the openings of the air breathing roots of mangroves or interfere with the trees' salt balance, causing leaves to drop and the trees to die. The root systems can be damaged by fresh oil entering nearby animal burrows and the effect may persist for some time inhibiting recolonisation by mangrove seedlings. Protection of wetlands, by responding to an oil spill at sea, should be a high priority since physical removal of oil from a marsh or from within a mangrove forest is extremely difficult. Living coral grows on the calcified remains of dead coral colonies which form overhangs, crevices and other irregularities inhabited by a rich variety of fish and other animals. If the living coral is destroyed the reef itself may be subject to wave erosion. The effects of oil on
