"The case for socialism"

This society does not yet exist, but only because we do not see it. There is nothing in this humble vision of a better social order that exceeds our physical or our intellectual power to create. We fail to secure these infinitely desirable ends because we do not see them, the world we can have for the asking. No vested interest and no political minority could long stand in the way of the united and informed imagination of a free nation. A Better Society Socialism and the British Tradition Author believe most profoundly that we can remedy economic and social inequality, our vandalism and our unimaginativeness. We can extend the help that we give to one another until we have built, unwrittingly, a better society. The most fruitful central idea for future is to be found in the main doctrine of the British Labour Party. Author is convinced that the faith of the Party in a moderate and democratic form of Socialism is a natural outcome of our

industrial towns are in bad shape, most of them are about to fall down, but people still live in these because there is nowhere else to live. There is mass unemployment in towns like these. Most likely every third person is living on the dole and there is no chance of getting work. A family gets about twenty-five to thirty shillings per week, which fifteen shillings go for food, including fuel for cooking. The second part of the book Orwell talks about his principles and the idea of socialism. He talks about how different classes in England get along with one another. It is more than natural that the higher classes reject the lower classes. He was taught the same principles when he was just a child. He comments upon how middle-class communists and socialists often speak against their own class. He talks about his experience as an agent in Burma, where his life was changed. In summary Orwell says that socialism is a nearly impossible thing. MY OPINION

The Reform Act of 1832 was follower by other urgently needed social reforms: the creation of police force; free, compulsory education; the extension of the vote. Meanwhile the working classes were becoming organized. While the ideas of Karl Marx were never won much support among British workers, the idea of socialism was nevertheless a potent force in late Victorian Britain. The founding of the Labour Party, led by Keir Hardia, gave the proletariat a greater voice in Parliament. Mário Soares would be Prime Minister from 1976 to 1978 and again from 1983 to 1985. In this capacity Soares tried to resume the economic growth and development record that had been achieved before the Carnation Revolution, during the last decade of the previous regime. He initiated the process of accession to the European Economic Community (EEC) by starting accession negotiations as early as 1977. The country bounced between socialism and adherence to the neoliberal model. Land reform and nationalizations were enforced; the Portuguese Constitution (approved in 1976) was rewritten in order to accommodate socialist and communist principles. Until the constitutional revisions of 1982 and 1989, the constitution was a highly charged ideological document with numerous references to socialism, the rights of workers, and the desirability of a socialist economy

and the whole standard of living improved. Newspapers played an essential part in the 11 | P a g e Estonians' social and political awareness; societies and associations were also of immense importance -- in 1905, there were more than 500 in Estonia. The Estonian `social mentality' as a whole remained in opposition to the central Russian government; nationalism and socialism were the major political trends. Within the early 20th century national movement, the moderate and radical wings were clearly profiled. The moderates who gathered around the Tartu newspaper Postimees (the first issue was published in 1891), founded by Jaan Tõnisson and pastor Villem Reiman, wanted to transform the Russian authoritarian rule into parlamentarian government, i.e. constitutional monarchy. They also demanded citizens' rights in Russia, modelled upon those in Western Europe. The

of the empire. 154 All the advocates of the preservation of the Soviet Union, including Gorbachev, blame the collapse on the local elites, separatists, nationalists, and party nomenklatura, citing the desire to get a bite of the public property rather than the nation’s desire for freedom as the leading motive. Those who idealise the empire mostly discard any actual analysis of the national issue, instead eulogising the unprecedented burgeoning of nations under the Soviet regime and socialism as such. These memoirs demonstrate that the liberation movements of the Baltic peoples played a very important, in some aspect even pioneering role in the annihilation of the Soviet Union, whereas the principal underlying reason was Russia’s own pursuit of sovereignty. Some derzhavniks’ writings on the Baltic issue are over- flowing with blatant fabrications and propaganda lies. However, a shift has occurred in the attitudes of the democratic wing of the
