A short story

Today was one of those days where everything went wrong. I had prepared myself for a job interview for a long time because I wanted that job so much. One day before the interview I set the alarm clock at 7.00am, so that I would have enough time to get ready. The interview started at 9.00am. I woke up in the morning because I heard a door bell and wondered who could come so early. I saw my neighbour standing at the door holding a newspaper. ,,You always come at 8 o'clock. What are you doing here so early?" I asked. She raised her eyebrows, felt really confused and said she had come as usual. I glanced at my watch and understood that my alarm clock hadn't rang. My job interview would start in one hour and I had to hurry on a bus. Half an hour later I was in the bus station and felt relieved because I had still 5 minutes until my bus came. So I waited and looked at the timetable and saw that the bus drove every working day except that day....

Estonian national emblems and symbols

Estonian National Emblems and Symbols There are several important emblems and symbols of Estonia of which many are also known for the rest of the world. Estonian national emblems are the blue- black-and-white national flag, the national anthem and the coat of arms. The symbols are national flower (the cornflower), national bird (the barn swallow) and national stone (limestone). Estonian flag was originally the flag of the Estonian Students' Society which was consecrated in 1884. During Soviet rule, the flag was prohibited and it was first used again in Tartu in 1988. The national anthem is entitled as "My Native Land, My Pride and Joy". The melody was composed in the centre of the 19 th century by Friedrich Pacius and the Estonian lyrics were written by Johann Voldemar Jannsen. It was adopted as the official national anthem in 1920. The national coat of arms is originated from Denmark. It ...

First snow

First snow It was unusually hot in my small bedroom when I woke up. As I looked at the clock, it was only 7.30 in the morning and I was still dead tired from my last night`s birthday party. I didn´t feel any strenght left in my muscles but nevertheless I walked across my bedroom to turn the radiator down. That was strange. The heat wasn´t on. When I opened the window to let in some cooling autumn air I saw something slowly falling from the sky. It was too early for the first snow and also the weather was also unusually warm. I opened the window even more to get rid of that suffocating air stuck inside the room but that made it even worse, all the breathable air seemed to fly out. Next, I quickly closed the window and rushed to the bathroom where I was about to take a refreshing cold shower. As I put my head under the cooling water, I realized that something was wrong. The water looked da...

Novellist, novelliteooriast ja Dekameronist

KONSPEKT: Novellist, novelliteooriast ja "Dekameronist" (Toomas Liiv) Kõige pealt nn klassikalisest novelliteooriast Meeldetuletuseks, et novell zanrina tekkis 14.sajandil Itaalias. Rajajaiks Boccacciot oma ,,Dekameroniga". ,,Dekameroni" eeskujuks nimetab Toomas Liiv 13.

Cinema is the most restricitve medium

Cinema is the most restricitve medium The topic of this essay is cinema as the most restrictive medium. I would like to discuss the restrictions of cinema as such – what these are, how do they affect the medium. For example time limit of the films, budget, how it affects writer and director, what kind of choices they have to make, and how the audience come into play. Personally, i don’t consider cinema as a restrictive medium. Cinema’s most restrictive feature is time. Filmmakers must fit very good shots edited into very good storyline into one and a half to three hour movie, usually. The reason being, we get uncomfortable sitting long period of time. If the movies would be longer, we would lose interest and start doing something else. We would simply get uncomfortable sitting on a chair and the whole cinema experience would become agony. Furthermore, producing films can be expensive, especially longer films. Al...

What makes a good movie-

"What makes a good movie?"

What makes a good movie? To make a good movie, the director has to succeed in many different fields. If the movie has great special effects and acting, but the story is very weak, the movie may not be as successful as a movie with moderate effects, acting and story. A good movie consists of three most important elements: story, actors and special effects. The most important part of the movie is the story. Many good movies are based on successful books and thus already have a great story as well as many fans that liked the book and will be looking forward to the movie. Other movies that are not based on any existing stories have to have a better story to be successful because they most likely won't have any real fans before the movie is released. The story can't be too long or too short. It has to have some detail but not too much as that would make the movie boring and long. Too much text and no real action or ...

The history of movies

The history of movies starts in early 1900s. American inventor Thomas Edison, began making short motion pictures at the turn of the century. In 1903, a movie called "The Great Train Robbery" was the first one to tell the whole story. Movies were silent at this time and orchestras played music in theathers, so movies would have sound. The Jazz Singer in 1927 was the first movie to have sound. A year later, 1928, a funny animation movie "Steamboat willie" was produced. 1920-s were also the rise of hollywood. The majority of film making took place in the hollywood area. Hollywood was the initial birth place of the studios. Studios there were separated into 3 different groups. The biggest one was the Big Five. It included studios like ee WB. 20th Century Fox and Paramount. Movies were fun. Everyone had something to talk about. People would go to see the movies in big groups and have fun. They started to assume that it was normal to be enter...

At 5 weeks old she and her mother returned to New Zealand. § Her father was a doctor and her mother was a writer of commercial fiction under the pen name "Pearl Bellairs", among others. Her parents divorced when she was five. She lived with her mother, sister and grandmother until she started college and, as a result, grew up believing "the world was peopled by females". This problably influenced her works too. § She returned to England with her mother and studied economics and psychology at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. § Her actual christened name was "Franklin Birkinshaw". which she feels contributed to her being accepted at St Andrews and permitted to study economics: the school assumed she was a male student applica...

Epic (ingl. k eepos)

EPIC ,,A long narrative poem on a great and serious subject, related in an elevated style, and centered on a heroic or quasi-divine figure on whose actions depends the fate of a tribe, a nation, or the human race. The traditional epics were shaped by a literary artist from historical and legendary materials which had developed in the oral traditions of his nation during a period of expansion and warfare" An epic is a lengthy narrative poem, ordinarily concerning a serious subject containing details of heroic deeds and events significant to a culture or nation. Nonetheless, epics have been written down at least since the works of Virgil, Dante Alighieri, and John Milton. Many probably would not have survived if not written down. Eating fast food

Eating fast food In today's age of comfort and convenience, fast food needs no introduction. Everyone from a 2 year old toddler to a 60 year old grandpa seems to be enjoying it every time they get. And why not? It's delicious, it's filling, is really affordable, and available just any time of the day, being only a phone call away. What more can you ask for when you are living life in the fast lane? Well, plenty fast food is all good tasting, except that it is not nutritionally balanced and, therefore, unhealthy in the long run if consumed on a regular basis. Fast food is loaded with calories from refined sugar and fats .It is also very high in sodium, coming from common salt and other additives. On top of all this, fast food is deficient in dietary fiber and essential micro-nutrients like vitamins and minerals. To make matters worse, heaps of fast food are normally guzzled down with gal...

All Marketers are liars

In his book, All Marketers are Liars, Seth Godin contends that consumers prefer fantasy to the truth, and that consequently marketers should "live the lie, fully and completely." Stopping short of endorsing marketing methods which might kill people, Godin says that marketers should "give people what they want." The book is telling a story about why marketers must forsake any attempt to communicate nothing but the facts, and must focus on what people believe and then work to tell them stories that add their worldview. HIGHLIGHTS Before marketing, before shopping carts and long before informercials, people started telling themselves stories. Stories make it easier to understand the world. Stories are the only way to spread an idea. Marketers didn´t invent storytelling. They just perfected it. We tell ourselves stories, because we´re superstitious. Stories are shortcuts we use because we ´re too overwhelmed by data to discover ...

Making a film

Making a film

Whatever kind of movie you make, it must have a clear idea, because the audience needs to understand the content. Film-making is very expensive, even about 15 minutes long film can cost over 30,000 pounds to make. A low-budget feature-length film can cost more than 0,5 million pounds. Therefore, film-maker must be sure that audience will like the movie. Low-budget films in Britain usually begin with a script, which is written specially for playing in the cinema. There are courses over Britain for people who want to learn how to write a script. One person can't take the responsibility of the whole movie, because film-making needs to involve hundreds of people. Low-budget films are shot on limited budget, beacause young or unknown dircetors suffer from lack of funding from studios. Several organizations like The British Film Institute fund short films shot by first-time directors. Also The BBC, Channel 4 and National Lottery spend lar...

Blandings Castle kokkuvõte

Blandings Castle by P.G. Wodehouse Wodehouse was an acknowledged master of English prose admired both by contemporaries and by modern writers. He has been called "English literature's performing flea", a derogatory description that Wodehouse cherished and adopted as the title of his autobiography. Best known today for the Jeeves and Blandings Castle novels and short stories, Wodehouse was also a talented playwright and lyricist who was part author and writer of fifteen plays and of 250 lyrics for some thirty musical comedies. Wodehouse took a modest attitude to his own works. In Over Seventy (1957) he wrote: "I go in for what is known in the trade as 'light writing' and those who do that humorists they are sometimes called are looked down upon by the intelligentsia and sneered at." Wodehouse's characters are often eccentric, with peculiar attachments, such as to newts (Gussie Fink-Nottle) or socks (Archibald Mulliner). His "ment...

Kafka s Hunger Artist

Kafka's Hunger Artist

Kafka's Hunger Artist Kafka, in his masterpiece "The Hunger Artist," suggests that humans can never satisfy their desires. This is illustrated through the metaphorical hunger artist for whom nourishment is not being nourished at all. The viewing public's interest is derived from their desire to see the hunger artist cheating, but to view this would put an end to that desire. Finally, Kafka presents this idea while the artist is at the circus and describing when people wish to view the starved man. The hunger artist's nourishment is spiritual. The man only wishes to be honored by the public. As he continuously spirals downward in his health, he looses all forms of material nourishment. As the days go on, there is conflict between the artist and the audience, as they do not believe him honest in claiming not to have eaten. By searching for the audience's approval, a symbol for spiritual nourishment, he loses both material and spirit...

H. G. Wells

Herbert George Wells (1866-1946) a Brief Biography Sometimes called the father of modern science fiction, H.G. Wells was born on September 21, 1866 in Bromley, Kent, England. His father, a professional cricket player and shopkeeper, and his mother, a former lady's maid, raised Wells with the idea that he would find a place in the work world that they were accustomed. He aspired to a different place in society. When he was thirteen, he left school to become a draper's apprentice, a job his family expected would be proper for a boy of his station. The work repelled him, however. He worked briefly in a drugstore, returned for a stint as a draper's assistant, then finally found a job as a teacher's assistant in a grammar school. Education and academia suited him well. In 1884 he entered college with a scholarship to study biology. He was able to study under one of the great biology teachers of the time, Thomas Henry Huxley, and Wells gradu...
