I have a great job. I’m a usability consultant. Here’s what I do: People (“clients”) send me something they’re working on. It could be designs for a newWebsite they’re building, or the URL of a site that they’re redesigning, or a prototype of an app. I try using what they send me, doing the things that their users would need or want to do with it. I note the places where people are likely to get stuck and the things that I think will confuse them (an “expert usability review”). Sometimes I get other people to try using it while I watch to see where theyget stuck and confused (“usability testing”). I have a meeting with the client’s team to describe the problems I found that are likely to cause users grief (“usability issues”) and help them decide which ones are most important to fix and how best to fix them. Libraries. We know a lot of things thanks to books, but we do not know exactly when and where they originated, and what should be considered the first book in the world. Ancient document, written on parchment, papyri and vellum can hardly be qualified as books the way we understand the word today. Centuries went before paper replaced parchment and papyri. In the 15 th century Johann Gutenberg invented a mechanical process of duplicating texts, which we today call book printing. The first book was printed between 1444 and 1446, so these years can be considered as the beginning years of book printing. His most important preserved printings are the 40 copies of the Bible. By the end of the 15 th century there were about 1000 print-shops in Europe already. The oldest Estonian
and pretty much my father figure at the time. I tried to teach him Estonian and learned some Russian instead. My Russian studies in school have always been very hectic and making very little sense. Teachers kept changing all the time, teaching methods kept changing as well and learning Pushkin by heart does not work wonders with one's speaking skills, really. (Although I still can recite one of his poems...) The point is, I actually really like Russian. I've never been good at it, but I like the language and I really wish I knew it better. I can speak some, but not read much. As soon as the characters stop talking to each other, I'm stuck and can barely understand anything. then how they can influence your life sometimes so much? They are all written by humans. But the interesting thing actually is, that in his lifetime, human being is the smartest on this planet and can make big things, but this is all transient. Humans die. But if human creates something, for example, a book, then it may live centuries. Books are like the continuation of the book writers life. Human's mind can forget, but if the book is in the bookshelf and your name is on the cover, then it will not disappear anywhere. You may "live" thousands of years. The thing what changes everything, is the content of the book. There may be a lot of rubbish between the covers, but also intriguing stories. The book is a good way of expressing your thoughts and feelings. And the positive side is, that you do not have to speak. You put your thoughts on the paper and just publish it. But publishing may sometimes make a lot of trouble. Books have caused big conflicts
