LEL 2E Notes on Vocabulary One of the key facts about the lexicon of any language is that it reflects in various ways the physical and cultural environment in which the language is spoken. A people unfamiliar with, say, horses is unlikely to have a word for `horse'; similarly with ploughs, printing presses, and internet porn sites. For the most part this is trivial it's hard to imagine how it could be otherwise, given the general nature of human language. People tend to make a great deal of the alleged fact (see Pullum 1989) that "the Eskimos have lots of words for snow", but it doesn't take much thought to realise that any language spoken in a given physical and cultural environment is likely to have efficient ways of referring to distinctions that are important in that environment. That doesn't mean that you can read very much into individual words and individual facts about the lexicon of a given language (this topic has already c...

Singing Revolution To the end of 80s, the Soviet Union folks didn't want to live under socialistic- communistic order anymore. The Soviet Union was protected with the Iron Curtain, which symbol was the Berlin wall. At the same time, not only Estonia, but also other countries that were under the authority of the Soviet Union, increased the independence efforts. People didn't want to live like this anymore, it was based on fear and commands. The start of the Estonian public announcement of the reindependence is probably the Singing Revolution. To begin with, the Singing Revolution was a non-violent wish expressing and embarked on the Soviet Union to fall apart. The Singing Revolution is a commonly used name for events between 1987 and 1990 that led to the restoration of the independence of Estonia and also Latvia and Lithuania. Tartu Ülikool Usuteaduskond Yvonne Lagle Maagiline Taoism Referaat Tartu 2012 Sissejuhatus Selleks, et rääkida maagilisest taoismist tuleks vaadelda neid mõisteid hetkeks eraldi. Taoism keskendub enamasti inimese sisemaailmale. Taoistlik inimese ideaal on ,,õnnis inimene". Rääkides Taoismist on kõige olulisemad märksõnad Lao Zi ja kulgemine. Kusjuures kulgemine ei tähenda siin kontekstis laisalt olesklemist, vaid hoopis seesmise Minaga tasakaalus olemist ja maailmaga harmoonilist suhet, koos kulgemist, õppimist. Nüüd aga maagiast, mida on keerulisem defineerida. Mina võtsin maagia mõistele aluseks tavainimesele üleloomuliku, metafüüsilise suuruse või lihtsalt silmaga nähtamatuks jääva inimese seesmise elutarkuse. Maagiline taoism sisaldab mitmeid erinevaid eesmärke ja võtteid nende saavutamiseks. Taoisti ja taoismi järgijat võibki tegelikult juba maagiliseks pidada, kuna nende tarkus on maagiliselt li...
Sissejuhatus Uurimistöö olulisi osasid on kasutatav strateegia. 1 Uurimisprotsess Uurimisprotsess koosneb mitmetest eraldi käsitletavatest osadest. Enne strateegia valimist on vaja välja selgitada lähenemisviis. Saunders et al (2009, 138) kirjeldavad kogu protsessi uurimissibula abil. Nad nimetavad olul...
Globe Theater The Globe Theatre was a theatre in London associated with William Shakespeare. He wrote there many of his greatest plays. It was first built in 1599 by Shakespeare's playing company, the Lord Chamberlain's Men, and was destroyed by fire on 29 June 1613. It was rebuilt in June 1614 and closed in 1642. It stood on the bank of the River Thames in Southwark, London, England, UK. In 1987, though, after many years of careful research, work began to build a new theatre as much like the original as possible. The New Globe was built with the same materials and building methods as the Shakespeare´s theatre. It is a round building, 3 storeys high, with a wooden frame and plaster walls. The middle of the theatre is open to the sky. The New Globe opened in 1997. It was named "Shakespeare's Globe and it is used from April to October for performances of plays both by Shakespeare and other playwrights of h...

South Africa Apartheid and before South Africa was created by peoples from Africa, Asia, and Europe. created their own states , combined (sometimes through war, sometimes through negotiation) to form the current South African state. The important thing is not what states were called or how long they lasted, but how they were organised, maintained control, gained and lost legitimacy. South African state formed out of: Conquest Colonization Slavery Indentured labour Racially discriminatory laws reserved jobs for whites; differential pay-scales etc Post 1910 state strong and centralized institutionalised racism: "power, wealth and privileges [distributed] unequally on a racial basis" (Giliomee, 1995, p190) Farming and mining (the basis of the economy) both required large work forces. Once slavery was abolished, need for to generate labour force. Taxation (poll tax) used to force blacks...
Walter Bruce Willis on sündinud endise Lääne-Saksa sõjaväebaasis 19. märtsil 1955. aastal. New Jersey's elas Bruce aktiivset lapsepõlve. Ta osales draamas Montclair State Kolledzhis, kus ta mängis klassi etenduses "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof". Seejärel lahkus Willis koolist ning suundus New York'i. Willis hakkas taas baarmaniks, kuid sedapuhku poole...
