Koos baritonsaksofonisti Harry Carneyga leidis Ellington sellele instrumendile koha jazzis.

Ellington sai põhihariduse Armstrong'i tehnika keskkoolis. Talle pakkus

Chicago jazz

Chicago jazz Jazz muusika kujunes välja Ameerika Ühendriikides. Esimesed jazzi orkestrid tekkisid 20. sajandi algul. Chicago jazz on üks jazzi liike. Chicago jazzi stiilis suurenes solistide tähtsus. Vähenes kollektiivse improvisatsiooni osa, see säilis vaid palade alguses ja lõpus. Marsilik rütm asendus sujuvama rütmiga. Sellest sai hiljem alguseks svingile. Chicago jazzi kuulsamad esitajad on Bud Freeman, Duke Ellington, Johnny Hodges, Paul Whiteman. Bud Freeman oli ansamblijuht ja helilooja. Ta mängis tenor saksofoni, kuid ka klarnetit. Bud Freeman liitus teise maailmasõja ajal USA armeega ja juhtis seal Usa armee bändi. Duke Ellington oli helilooja ja orkestrijuht. Mitmetes suuremates Ellingtoni teosetes on teemaks mustade ajalugu.

Moulin Rouge It is a movie about two lovers who fall in love but their love is not possible. Woman, Satine is a courtesan who works in Moulin Rouge and the man, Christian is a poor writer who writes a play ,,Spectacular Spectacular" for Moulin Rougle and Harold Zidler who is the owner of Moulin Rouge. At the beginning Christian presents himself as the Duke to win Satine's favour. The reason was not that he wanted to trick her but to present his work to Satine. Satine believed that Christian was the right Duke and tried to seduce Christian eventhough the man recisted. They fell in love after Christian reads her one of his poems. But Zidler had planned Satine to spend the night with the right Duke because he wanted him to become the investor of the Moulin Rouge because Zidler wanted Moulin Rouge to be a real theatre. He used Satine to do that.

The Norman Conquest

For over three centuries Western Europe was raided by the Vikings. The Vikings who had settled down in England had mixed with the Anglo-Saxons. They lived under the rule of the English kings. In the 9th century a territory in northern France was conquered by another branch of the Vikings. That territory was called Normandy. They took over the French coustoms, traditions and language. The Normans lived under the rule of their own duke. By the 11th century the dukes of Normandy had become very powerful. Altought the kinf of France was their lord, they were very independent. William was the Duke of Normandy when the English king Edwar died. William had promised him that he'll be the next king. But there was another relative , Harold, who wanted to be king too. William wanted to start a war. Knights from all over the France were invited to his army.Harold was killed in the battle and the English were defeated

Film review - Moulin Rouge

The film is set in the beginning of 20 th century in Paris. The main character is a poor English poet Christian who meets a group of bohemians who tell him that he should write a musical play for them to be played at the Moulin Rouge. There Christian meets Satine, the club's star and Paris' most famous courtesan, whom he falls in love with. After some time Satine falls for him as well. Things get really complicated when the club's owner invests in a wealthy duke to help pay for the club's remodelling but the duke will only pay if he gets Satine. That ends up as a crazy love triangle and the ending is very tragic. The soundtrack is very good and all the songs are medleys from various songs written much later than the movie takes place, in example Madonna's "Like a Virgin" and Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit". I would recommend this film to anyone who likes musicals and a little drama to go with them.

Alexis Alexandrovich Romanov, the brother of the heir to the Russian throne, went to New Orleans, where the Mardi Gras was being planned. When the planners discovered that a royal person was attending the noisy festivities a float was added for a new king, "Rex." That year, 1872, set the pattern for the Mardi Gras that is celebrated today.. The Grand Duke Alexis was surprised and honored to sit on the float and play the role of Rex. Alexis and Lydia, her loved one whom he had fallowed to New Orleans, probably never even met, but they began a tradition. Rex and his queen are chosen each year to ride on the largest float. They are masked and in costume. Those around the royalty, called "maskers," toss "throw- outs" to the crowd in response to the traditional cry, "Throw me something mister!" The

William the Conqueror

William is also referred to as "William II" in relation to his position as Duke of Normandy. In particular, before his conquest of England, he was known as "William the Bastard because of the illegitimacy of his birth. On his father's death in 1035, William was recognised as heir, with his great uncle serving as regent. In 1042 he began to take more personal control. From 1046 until 1055 he dealt with a series of baronial rebellions. William's political and military successes helped him in negotiations to marry Matilda, daughter of Count Baldwin of Flanders in 1053.

Othello opens in the stately city of Venice

Othello opens in the stately city of Venice, a worldwide hub for trade and commerce. The first characters introduced are Iago, an ensign denied promotion by Othello, and Roderigo, a jealous ex- suitor of Desdemona. The two are in route to describing to Senator Brabantio the elopement of Othello and Desdemona, Brabantio’s daughter. Quickly revealing Iago’s deceitful nature, the matter is breached to Brabantio and soon afterward brought before the Duke of Venice to be discussed. Othello and Desdemona plead their love to the Duke, refuting the Senator’s claims that Othello bewitched his daughter, and that their marriage was true. After Othello claims that he wooed her with his adventurous stories, Desdemona herself testifies that she fell honestly in love with the Moor and freely married him. Following their clearance of wrongdoing, Othello is immediately sent to defend against the Turks in Cyrpus

The Queens of England

of Aragón. Because Henry divorced Catherine, Mary was declared illegitimate. Nonetheless, Henry included her in his will, and on the death of her half-brother, Edward VI, on July 6, 1553, she became the legal heir to the throne. Although Lord High Chamberlain John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland, favoured the succession of his daughter-in-law, Lady Jane Grey, and proclaimed her queen on July 10, the country supported Mary. As a Roman Catholic, Mary began her reign by sweeping away the religious innovations of her father and her brother. Henry VIII had separated England from the Church in Rome; Edward VI had replaced Roman Catholicism with a Protestant settlement. Mary restored the Mass and re-established the authority of the papacy, but, although she handed back Crown

Queen Victoria and Victorian England

PRG 11B. 26.05.07 Queen Victoria and Victorian England (Queen Victoria is supposed to have said this as a 10-year-old girl on learning that she was likely to become queen in the future: I will be good.) VICTORIA (r. 1837-1901) Victoria was born at Kensington Palace, London, on 24 May 1819. She was the only daughter of Edward, Duke of Kent. The Duke and Duchess of Kent selected the name Victoria but her uncle, George IV, insisted that she be named Alexandrina after her godfather, Tsar Alexander II of Russia. Edward died when Victoria was eight months old, upon which her mother enacted a strict regimen that shunned the courts of Victoria's uncles, George IV and William IV. her for her virtue alone, overlooking her lack of dowry. She remains loyal to Lear despite his cruelty toward her, forgives him, and displays a mild and forbearing temperament even toward her evil sisters, Goneril and Regan. Despite her obvious virtues, Cordelia’s reticence makes her motivations difficult to read, as in her refusal to declare her love for her father at the beginning of the play. Goneril - Lear’s ruthless oldest daughter and the wife of the duke of Albany. Goneril is jealous, treacherous, and amoral. Shakespeare’s audience would have been particularly shocked at Goneril’s aggressiveness, a quality that it would not have expected in a female character. She challenges Lear’s authority, boldly initiates an affair with Edmund, and wrests military power away from her husband. Regan - Lear’s middle daughter and the wife of the duke of Cornwall. Regan is as ruthless as Goneril and as aggressive in all the same ways

Džässi lühikirjeldus

Džäss Džässmuusika, mis tekkis 19 sajandi lõpul, kujutab endast Aafrika ja Euroopa rahvamuusika ristumisel tekkinud revolutsioonilist muusikastiili. Selle eelkäijateks loetakse USA mustanahaliste töölaulu, spirituaali, bluusi ning ragtime’i. Džässi arenguloos eristatakse kolme põhijärku: traditsioonilist džässi, svingi ja nüüdisaegset džässi. Džässmuusikas on suur osa improvisatsioonil. Džässi levikut hõlbustas ka tehnika areng – esimeste vinüülplaatide välja an...
