Out of some 350 proposals, the design by sculptor A.P. Faidysh-Krandievsky and architects A.N. Kolchin and M.O. Barshch was chosen. The grand opening of the monument took place on October 4, 1964, on the day of the 7th anniversary of the Sputnik 1 launch. Since the 1960s, this part of Moscow in general has had a high concentration of space- themed sights and names: besides the monument and the museum under it, the grand "Cosmos" pavilion in the Exhibition Centre displayed many artifacts of the Soviet space program. Many streets in the area have been named after the precursors of the space program (Nikolai Kibalchich, Friedrich Zander, Yuri Kondratyuk) and its participants (Sergey Korolyov). The monument was designed to accommodate a museum in its base. However, it took until April 10, 1981 (two days before the 20th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's flight) to

There are even specific projects that are designed to engender such creativity amongst the local population. Examples of this type of initiative are the Tate Liverpool and the Tate Modern in London. But museums and galleries are not the only homes of art. Sculptures and art festivals also testify to the creative genius of England. Sculptures range from ancient figures of historical import to life- size bronze carvings of human beings (such as exist on the roof of De la Warr Pavilion in Bexhill or the Another Place exhibition on Crosby Beach, Liverpool). One of the largest art festivals is held in Birmingham and is called Artsfest. The artistic talents being showcased range from classical music and song to traditional dancing and stand-up comedy. This festival is usually held in September. Theatre is another very important part of the English culture and is, in fact, one of the reasons people visit the country. Theatrical shows, such as Cats,

Britain was gripped with austerity and rationing. During the war Britain had been seriously bombed for the first time, so exhibits addressed the problems of what could be done with bomb sites around ST Paul's Cathedral, in the City of London. Nothing was three-dimensional. All the exhibits were on one level of tabling in the Great Marquee, because the RHS had not yet realized the value of presentation. Inside the new triple football field sized Chelsea Display Pavilion, old World War II ammunition crates surface from storage at the Royal Hospital to create the elevated, stair step display stands underneath all the plant materials. (See also Postminimalism). The term "minimalist" is often applied colloquially to designate anything which is spare or stripped to its essentials. It has also been used to describe the plays and novels of Samuel Beckett, the films of Robert Bresson, the stories of Raymond Carver, and even the automobile designs of Colin Chapman. The word was first used in English in the early 20th century to describe the Mensheviks. *Regency The Regency period in the UK is the period when King George III was deemed unfit to rule and his son, later George IV, was named Prince Regent. It can be considered to be a transitional period between "Georgian" and "Victorian" eras. The era was distinctive for its architecture, literature, fashions, and politics. It was a period of excess for the aristocracy: for example, it was during this time that the Prince Regent built the Brighton Pavilion. However, it was also an era of uncertainty caused by the Napoleonic wars. *The Peterloo Massacre 1819 occurred at St Peter's Field, England. The end of the Napoleonic Wars had resulted in periods of famine and unemployment. It had enhanced the appeal of political Radicalism. In response, a group agitating for parliamentary reform, organised a demonstration to be addressed by Henry Hunt. Shortly after the meeting began,
