Oliver twist - kokkuvõte

Mrs. Mann took a large portion of the money given to her by the authorities for each child's food so Oliver grew up small and malnourished. On his ninth birthday, the town beadle, Mr. Bumble, came to collect Oliver and take him to the board for an interview. They told him he was to live with other wards of the state to become educated and learn a trade. Oliver did not mind this, but soon after he arrived, the state decided to implement a plan that would save money by feeding the people very little. After a time on this diet, the boys at the table chose Oliver to go ask the head cook for more gruel. Oliver did this, and was taken away. A flyer was then posted that said the state would give five pounds for someone to take young Oliver off their hands. Chapter3: The board locked up Oliver in what he called the `dark room' all day until someone would take him as an apprentice. After several days of solitary confinement, several beatings, and being made

A lamb to the slaughter

There was a slow smiling air about her, and about everything she did. The drop of a head as she bent over her sewing was curiously tranquil. Her skin - for this was her sixth month with child - had acquired a wonderful translucent quality, the mouth was soft, and the eyes, with their new placid look, seemed larger darker than before. When the clock said ten minutes to five, she began to listen, and a few moments later, punctually as always, she heard the tires on the gravel outside, and the car door slamming, the footsteps passing the window, the key turning in the lock. She laid aside her sewing, stood up, and went forward to kiss him as he came in. "Hullo darling," she said. "Hullo darling," he answered. She took his coat and hung it in the closer. Then she walked over and made the drinks, a strongish one for him, a weak one for herself; and soon she was back again in her chair with the sewing, and

Heartless

Heartless It was one late evening when a little blond girl, aged between 7-8, ran quietly across the Ninth Avenue and entered one of the old houses that were lining the road. Inside she went smoothly though the corridors and soon reached a wooden door. After knocking twice a voice from inside called "Enter!" and the child went in. The room was filled with the smoke of numberless cigarettes. The girl, however, made no emotion and came closer to the old and ugly man sitting behind the table. "I wasn't lucky today, Grandpa," whispered the child and her light blue eyes filled with tears as she talked. The man smoked soundlessly, not even glancing at the girl. "But I'll go again, tomorrow, and bring you twice the money! I promise! So

Yes, so it is, but, I do have a certain reason. Do you remember Sir Thom of the Minquettes'? That fine young man with fascinating blue eyes... Oh, my sweet Mary, you will never guess what happened yesterday! It was about seven o'clock in the evening when Lillian called me out for a walk you know I can't say `no' to my little sis. Anyway we went to the forest near the Swan Lake and, believe it or not, got lost! Awful! I was so scared... We walked and walked, not even knowing the direction we were heading to, until we reached a huge mansion. And the garden around it was so extraordinary... That is something you just must see! But neither the trees nor flowers could be as wonderful as the owner himself! Sir Thom treated us tea and sandwiches, not forgetting to show us way back to the village

and walls, and brushed aluminum security desk and turnstiles. I pulled my new ID card out of the inner pocket of my pants and held it up for the two guards in black business suits at the desk. They stopped me anyway, no doubt because I was majorly underdressed, but then they cleared me through. After I completed an elevator ride up to the twentieth floor, I'd have a general time frame for the whole route from door to door. Score. I was walking toward the bank of elevators when a svelte, beautifully groomed brunette caught her purse on a turnstile and upended it, spilling a deluge of change. Coins rained onto the marble and rolled merrily away, and I watched people dodge the chaos and keep going as if they didn't see it. I winced in sympathy and crouched to help the woman collect her money, as did one of the guards. "Thank you," she said, shooting me a quick harried smile. I smiled back

Travel to Riga on 26 October I woke up 15minutes later than my father. My eyes were still closed and I couldn't open them before I got a cup of hot coffee. At 8 o'clock we started driving to Riga.We also had GPS in our car, so it wasn't so boring, because it had some voice commands on and it was interesting to watch the route we were driving on. The weather was cloudy. In Pärnu one of turbosensors broke down.So we had a little lack of enginepower and it was pretty hard to past some cars with nonturbo diesel. At 1pm we arrived to Riga and drove to our relatives, who were living there.Everyone was happy to see me, my father and my granny once again in a long time. After 6 hours of communicating with all our relatives there, we started driving back home.It took 3,5 sleepy hours before I was at home.26.October was a very exhausting day. Sauna on 6 December

too much silence was dangerous even for the hunter. That is what Denis was a bounty hunter. Creasha looked at the paleness of her sleeping twin sister Suzan and thought that it'll be six months soon as mom and dad left the country and their children to the Fate. Well, the reality wasn't so dramatic, since they were politics whom had to travel a lot. Creasha and Suzan weren't small any longer, 16 is almost as good as grown-up! But Denis never thought so; he still cared about his little sisters, as they were babies in his mind. A sudden voice broke the silence Creasha had almost fallen asleep in. Suzan opened her eyes as well and whispered," I've heard this sound before, it's dad's car." In a couple of minutes the twins got dressed. Suzan, who had short, red hair and big, deep blue eyes just like Creasha, put on a white knee-length dress, while black-haired sister chose a black dress and a shiny golden bracelet. "Why that?" Suzan asked her, yet the twin only smiled

The Raven wasn't an exception. The vocalist, Daemon, practiced the guitar, while the others tried to calm down from the pressure that was thickening the air. Matrix, the guitarist, had taken his little sister with him. While he himself was practicing with the Ravens, Alice sat amongst the public. Suddenly, someone shook her hand. The girl turned and saw one extravagant-looking woman. "You are Alice Owen, right? The legendary Billy Owen' s youngest daughter?" Alice smiled and nodded. However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighbourhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters. One story Laurel was sitting on her bed, but everything around her was still gone. She thought it was just a dream some moments ago, but now she was certain something was wrong with her eyes. The background wasn't totally black, there were some lighter and darker places...but it didn't help her to get to the door. Slowly, almost millimeter-by-millimeter she moved to the other side of her small room, watching out for the things that were lying on the ground. "What are you doing, Laurel?" a sudden voice from somewhere behind called. The girl turned around and saw some blue stripes waving, but soon they were gone again. "Um, who is it?" she asked after a minute of silence, but the person who stood there was already gone. The next noise she heard were someone's fast, almost running feet on the stairs that

The English Patient

One day, a man with bandaged hands named Caravaggio arrived at the villa. He was an old family friend of Hana's father and he had heard about her location while he was recovering in a hospital a few miles away. In Canada, where Caravaggio knew Hana years ago, he was a thief. He told her that the Germans caught him after an attempt to steal a camera from a woman's room. They cut off his thumbs. Although he had recovered somewhat, he was still addicted to morphine. Hana had little garden outside where she grew vegetables and she thought that maybe David could use he's ability to steel something better also. Caravaggio refused, because he had "lost his nerve". Caravaggio felt that the English patient is not English and tried to get information from him. Hana played the piano in library and two sappers arrived. One of them was Kip. He knew that Germans used to put bombs into the musical instruments and he stopped Hana. One day Kip

Through the Looking-Glass

Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll The BLACK kitten had once again made a mess in the living room with a ball of worsted you see it could have not been the white kitten, Snowbell, as she was having her face washed by Dina. Alice caught the black kitten and settled into an arm-chair to wind up the worsted again. Soon forgetting all about it she started wondering if Kitty could play chess. And thus her favourite game of "Let's pretend" started. Suddenly the Looking-Glass House caught Alice's attention. She had always been wondering about the Looking-Glass world. It was so tempting. Without even noticing she was on the mantelpiece and through the looking-glass. The room was quite uninteresting and untidy. But there were some interesting things the pictures on the wall were alive and so were the pawns on the chessboard and the words in the book were only to be read through the looking-glass. Word count: 245 Continuing Katherine’s Mansfield’s short story “Mrs. Brill” Her heart started trembling as she thought about the incident in the park. The tears ran from her eyes like a river and the faces of Ann and George kept coming into her head. She walked into the other end of her miniature room, sat down on a blue wooden chair and opened a little box next to the chair. The box was old and was covered with dust, it was clear that it had been untouched for a long time. Inside the box there were photos of a little girl and the little girl’s parents. Miss Brill looked at these photos very carefully for a long time one by one. The last picture that she took in her hands was again a photo of a little girl. The girl was on a grey bed and looked awfully pale. Miss Brill took a long deep breath, closed her eyes and supported her back
