HOUSE AND HOME tööleht

Smaller houses usually have both a front and back garden with a neat lawn and flowerbeds. It is not unusual for an Englishman’s garden to cover only 3 or 4 sq m in front of the house. It is also possible to grow flowers and vegetables on an allotment – a piece of land rented for a low price from the local council. Another alternative is flower-boxes, attached to the windows or hanging flower-pots. Britain has many homeless people (280,000 as of 2019) who have to or choose to sleep outdoors or in temporary hostels. They also have their own magazine, the Big Issue, which talks about the problems of living in the streets. The Big Issue magazine currently sells over 83,000 copies in the UK every week. Vendors buy The Big Issue magazine for £1.25 and sell it for £2.50, meaning each seller is a micro-entrepreneur who is working, not begging. Therefore it is vitally important that buyers take their copy of the magazine when they pay for it.

get out of the laboratory and focus on getting clinical trials in actual humans," said Timothy J. Schoen, director of science and preclinical development for the Foundation Fighting Blindness. Now "there's a real push," he said, because "we've got a lot of blind people walking around, and we've got to try to help them." More than 3.3 million Americans 40 and over, or about one in 28, are blind or have vision so poor that even with glasses, medicine or surgery, everyday tasks are difficult, according to the National Eye Institute, a federal agency. That number is expected to double in the next 30 years. Worldwide, about 160 million people are similarly affected. "With an aging population, it's obviously going to be an increasing problem," said Michael D. Oberdorfer, who runs the visual neuroscience program for the National Eye Institute, which finances several sight-restoration projects, including the artificial retina

FAMILY tööleht

A ghost marriage was a sacred union in China between a living woman and a dead man. 4. Why did some women prefer such a marriage? Some women preferred this way of marriage because it gave the status of a married wife but also the economic independence and autonomy. Today a family is a married, civil partnered (in December 2005 Britain legalized homosexual marriages) or cohabiting couple with or without children, or a lone parent with at least one child, who lives at the same address. Children may be dependent or non-dependent. A household is one person living alone, or a group of people (not necessarily related) living at the same address who share cooking facilities and share a living room, sitting room or dining area. A household can consist of a single family, more than one family or no families in the case of a group of unrelated people. In the UK there were 27.2 million households in 2017, an average household size of 2.4.

channels of communication. Messages are ambiguous. But a notable feature of the early years of the 21st century is the fact that the body language of different nations is gradually becoming more similar. Thus, a gesture made by someone in (say) South America can often be easily interpreted by people in Russia or Japan. Much of this is due to the effects of TV, which of course shows the same sort of `soap operas' in all parts of the globe. Words and body language If a child is to believe the parents who say that it's healthy to go to bed early, it usually doesn't make much sense unless the parents express it with both words and body language. Otherwise, the child may get the impression that it is only good for the parents that the child is put to bed early. It is important to remember that, although body language does give you an additional channel of communication, which sometimes contradicts the spoken word, it should be interpreted with care
