While the governor-general is officially the representative of Queen Elizabeth II, in reality the governor-general acts only on the advice of the Canadian prime minister. Canada is an independent, self-governing nation. However, Canadians recognize Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain as Queen of Canada. The Event The first of many ships which arrived at the Boston harbor carrying the East India Company tea was Dartmouth arriving in late November 1773. Thousands attended the protest meetings, every meeting larger than the one before. The crowds shouted defiance not only at the British Parliament, the East India Company, and Dartmouth but at Governor Thomas Hutchinson as well, who was still struggling to have the tea landed. The owner of the Dartmouth and its captain agreed that the tea would be returned to England. However, Governor Hutchinson ordered the harbor to be blocked and he would not allow any tea-bearing vessels to leave until they had been unloaded. When the captain reported Hutchinson's refusal to a massive protest meeting, the participants disguised as Indians and

"Northwest Passage" is one of the best-known songs by Canadian musician Stan Rogers. An a cappella song. While it recalls the history of early explorers who were trying to discover a route across Canada to the Pacific Ocean , its central theme is a comparison between the journeys of these past explorers and the singer's own journey to and through the same region. O Canada is the national anthem of Canada. The song was originally commissioned by the Lieutenant Governor of Quebec. The French "Ô Canada" was first performed on June 24, 1880, at a Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day banquet in Quebec City, but did not become Canada's official national anthem until July 1, 1980. The Canadian government bought the rights to the lyrics and music for only one dollar. The lyrics to "Ô Canada! mon pays, mes amours", a French-Canadian song, were written by George-Étienne Cartier "Ode to Newfoundland" is the official provincial anthem of Newfoundland and Labrador

September was the worst season of the year for sea crossing. After 65 days they landed at Cape Cod. The Pilgrims suffered a great deal during their first winter, because they were poorly equipped and poorly trained. One spring morning an Indian came and introduced him in a friendly way. The Indian chief offered assistance to the pilgrims and the Indians thought the Pilgrims how to hunt, fish, and grow food. Because of this help they had a good harvest every year. Governor William Bradford invited the Pilgrims and the Indians to share a Thanksgiving feast to strengthen the bond between them. They accepted. The celebration lasted 3 days. The holiday was a great success. Later, Thanksgiving was celebrated in all the colonies of New England. In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed it a national thanksgiving. The fur traders were more concerned with their trading than farming and settlement. Also war made the settlers feel more unsafe. So the King of France decided to end the rule of fur traders and make New France a royal colony governed by the King. On behalf of the King a governor, a bishop and an intedant ruled in New France. They ensured that more settlers came to the colony and they encouraged farming and industry. But till by 1700 France wasn't the colony the King had wanted and it had been almost constantly in war. And also people will never be late to work or school. I really hope, that governor will agree with this idea, and our petition will pass. I´m pretty sure, that lot of people will support us. In 1735 a war began between France and England over the fur trade in North America. Since 1759 and on to this day Canada became British. In the middle of the 19th century it seemed practical to unite the colonies into one self- governing country. In 1867 the Dominion of Canada was created - an independent country within the British Empire consisting of 4 provinces: Ontario, New Brunswick, Quebec and Nova Scotia, with the monarch represented in Canada by governor-general. HOW CANADA GOT THE NAME CANADA There have been many theories about the origin of the name Canada but there can be a little doubt that the word is Indian in origin. When Jacques Cartier sailed up the St. Lawrence River in 1534 to the Indian village of Stadacona, now Quebec, he heard the village called ,,kanata" and took that to be the name of the country. However, in some Huron dialects, ,,Kanata" means settlement or a village

Famous castles of Scotland

As with all castles, Edinburgh's fortress has been a centre of military activity. As an ancient fortress Edinburgh Castle is one of the few that still has a military garrison, albeit for largely ceremonial and administrative purposes. The New Barrack Block is now home to the official headquarters of the Royal Regiment of Scotland and 52 Infantry Brigade, as well as home to the regimental museum of the Royal Scots and Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. The Governor of Edinburgh Castle is Major General David McDowall, GOC of the British Army's 2nd Division. The Governor of the Castle has always been the head of the Army in Scotland. Direct administration of the castle by the War Office only came to an end in 1923 when the army formally moved to the city's new Redford Barracks. Nevertheless, the Castle continues to have a strong connection with the Army. Sentries still stand watch at the castle gatehouse after opening hours, with responsibility for
