Beginning in 1202, an order of German crusading knights from Livonia (Latvia) joined with the Danes to conquer and 2 Christianize the Estonians. By 1227 the Danes controlled northern Estonia; the Livonian Knights, southern Estonia. The Teutonic Knights, another German crusading order, gained control of southern Estonia in 1237 and later conquered all of Estonia. The Teutonic Knights withdrew from Estonia in 1560. Sweden and Poland then fought for control of Estonia; in 1629, Sweden won and annexed the region. Peter I of Russia conquered Estonia in 1710, and in 1721 Sweden formally recognized Russian possession of the region. Russia remained in control of Estonia until shortly after the Bolshevik revolution of 1917. and two outstanding prime ministers, William Gladstone and Benjamin Disreali. By the end of her reign the nation was the most powerful in the world and by the 1920s the British Empire comprised about a quarter of the world's territory and population. Victoria had nine children, who eventually became the monarchs of many European countries like Russia, German, Sweden and Greece. After Prince Albert's death Victoria withdrew from most public appearances for years. She put much effort into planning and building a series of memorials to her husband. During the last decades of her life she once again involved herself in state and political matters. Britain also took part in the Crimean War (1853-1856). The British part in this war, to halt Russian expanding into the Balkans, was appallingly planned and executed. Hospital conditions though were atrocious: there was no room for all the patients

On 29 February 1692 the three were arrested. On 1 March Judge John Hathorne and Judge Jonathan Corwin examined them. Sarah Good and Sarah Osborne denied the charges but Tituba confessed. Perhaps she felt that if she denied the charge she would not be believed, after all she was only a slave. She may also have hoped that if she confessed she would be spared. If so she was correct. Tituba was imprisoned for a while but she was not executed. Once the witch hysteria was over Tituba withdrew her confession. One of the most horrific aspects of the witch hysteria was that if you were accused and you confessed your life was spared. However if you were accused and you denied the charge but where then convicted you were hanged. Furthermore if you expressed scepticism about the witch trials you put yourself in danger. You might be accused to being a witch. The two other women steadfastly continued to deny any involvement in witchcraft. Sarah

Swedish king Charles XII turned his attention to Russia, invading it in 1708. After crossing into Russia, Charles defeated Peter at Golovchin in July. In the Battle of Lesnaya, Charles suffered his first loss after Peter crushed a group of Swedish reinforcements marching from Riga. Deprived of this aid, Charles was forced to abandon his proposed march on Moscow. Charles XII refused to retreat to Poland or back to Sweden and instead invaded Ukraine. Peter withdrew his army southward, employing scorched earth, destroying along the way anything that could assist the Swedes. Deprived of local supplies, the Swedish army was forced to halt its advance in the winter of 17081709. In the summer of 1709, they resumed their efforts to capture Ukraine, culminating in the Battle of Poltava on 27 June. The battle was a decisive defeat for the Swedish forces, ending Charles' campaign in Ukraine and forcing him south to seek refuge in the Ottoman Empire

Cross caught me by the upper arms and searched my face with that vivid blue gaze. "Something's wrong. What is it?" The now-familiar electricity crackled to life between us, the pull made fiercer by my temper. "You." "Me?" His thumbs stroked over my shoulders. Releasing me, he withdrew a lone key from his pocket and plugged it into the panel. All the lights cleared except for the one for the top floor. He wore black again, with fine gray pinstripes. Seeing him from the back was a revelation. His shoulders were nicely broad without being bulky, emphasizing his lean waist and long legs. The silky strands of hair falling over his collar tempted me to clench them and pull. Hard. I wanted him as pissy as I was. I wanted a fight. "I'm not in the mood for you now, Mr

At the same time, the Army's cryptologic research and code-compiling functions were handled by William Friedman, then as later a civilian employee of the Signal Corps. In 1929, Henry L.
