up. As processor speeds increase, more functionality is pushed into the soft- ware. The key factors that you must consider to determine your throughput requirements are: Interrupts How often must the interrupts occur, and how much processing must be per- formed in each ISR (interrupt service routine)? What is the maximum allow- able latency for servicing an interrupt? Will interrupts need to be turned off for an extended length of time, and how will that affect the latency of other interrupts? You may find that you need two (or more) processors—one to handle high-speed interrupts with short latency requirements but low com- plexity processing needs, and another to handle low-rate interrupts with more complex processing requirements. Interfaces What must the system talk to? How will the data be passed around or get to the outside world? How much hardware support will there be for the inter-

Those were good ideas, but space limitations forbade my adopting more than a handful of them; my apologies. 1 Introduction: meaning and reference Overview That certain kinds of marks and noises have meanings, and that we human beings grasp those meanings without even thinking about it, are very strik- ing facts. A philosophical theory of meaning should explain what it is for a string of marks or noises to be meaningful and, more particularly, what it is in virtue of which the string has the distinctive meaning it does. The theory should also explain how it is possible for human beings to produce and to understand meaningful utterances and to do that so effortlessly. A widespread idea about meaning is that words and more complex lin- guistic expressions have their meanings by standing for things in the world. Though commonsensical and at first attractive, this Referential Theory of meaning is fairly easily shown to be inadequate. For one thing, comparatively
recognized how one of the principles worked on (or for) them in a particular in- stance, and wrote to me describing the event. Their descriptions, which appear in the "Reader's Reports" in each chapter, illustrate how easily and frequently we can fall victim to the influence process in our everyday lives. There are now twice as many firsthand accounts of how the book's principles apply to business and personal lives. An array of people deserve and have my appreciation for their aid in making In- fluence possible. Several of my academic colleagues read and provided perceptive comments on the entire manuscript in its initial draft form, greatly strengthening the subsequent versions. They are Gus Levine, Doug Kenrick, Art Beaman, and Mark Zanna. In addition, the first draft was read by a few family members and friends- Richard and Gloria Cialdini, Bobette Gorden, and Ted Hall-who offered not only

and opportunities on the other. Then I discovered a series of re- markable principles that have been responsible for all the great suc- cesses and achievements of the ages, and my life changed forever. After proving these laws and principles in my own life, I began speaking, and training others to apply the same ideas. Since then, I have given more than two thousand talks and seminars as long as four days in length, in 24 countries, to a total of more than two mil- lion participants. Most of them were also skeptical when they first heard these ideas of optimism and possibility, until they learned what you are going to learn in the pages ahead. It changed their lives, as it will change yours. ■ THE GREAT PRINCIPLE Perhaps the most important mental and spiritual principle ever dis- covered is that you become what you think about most of the time
larger groups of letters (polygrams). The substitution and transposition systems illustrated above are ciphers. There is no sharp theoretical dividing line between codes and ciphers; the latter shade into the former as they grow larger. But in modern practice the differences are usually quite marked. Sometimes the two are distinguished by saying that ciphers operate on plaintext units of regular length (all single letters or all groups of, say, three letters), whereas codes operate on plaintext groups of variable length (words, phrases, individual letters, etc.). A more penetrating and useful distinction is that code operates on linguistic entities, dividing its raw material into meaningful elements like words and syllables, where as cipher does not—cipher will split the t from the h in the, for example.

APPENDIX J. MUSICAL EXAMPLES. PIANO ARRANGEMENTS AND SCORE SAMPLES. APPENDIX K. USEFUL ADDRESSES. ABOUT THE AUTHOR ESTONIA AND THE ESTONIANS Estonia is situated on the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland, between the Baltic Sea and Lake Peipsi. The country is populated by Estonians who belong to the Western Finnish group of nations, a branch of the Finno-Ugric stem, and speak the Estonian language. Estonia is the northernmost of the Baltic States. From west to east the length of the country is 360 kilometres and the width, from north to south, is 255 kilometres. The area is 45,227 square kilometres of which more than 4,000 square kilometres are made up by islands and islets (over 1,000); there are more than 1,400 lakes that form nearly 5% of the total area. More than 40% of the entire area is woodland. The country is flat; the average elevation is 50 metres above sea level. The highest peak, Suur Munamägi rises to only 317 metres. black oxfords draped in tailored black slacks. I waited a beat for the man to move out of my way and when he didn't, I arched my neck back to allow my line of sight to rise. The custom three -piece suit hit more than a few of my hot buttons, but it was the tall, powerfully lean body inside it that made it sensational. Still, as hot as all that magnificent maleness was, it wasn't until I reached the man's face that I went down for the count. Wow. Just...wow. He sank into an elegant crouch directly in front of me. Hit with all that exquisite masculinity at eye-level, I could only stare. Stunned. Then something shifted in the air between us. As he stared back, he altered...as if a shield slid away from his eyes, revealing a scorching force of will that sucked the air from my lungs. The intense magnetism he exuded grew in strength, becoming a near tangible impression of vibrant and unrelenting power.
for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. Genesis 2:17 PREFACE I'd never given much thought to how I would die -- though I'd had reason enough in the last few months -- but even if I had, I would not have imagined it like this. I stared without breathing across the long room, into the dark eyes of the hunter, and he looked pleasantly back at me. Surely it was a good way to die, in the place of someone else, someone I loved. Noble, even. That ought to count for something. I knew that if I'd never gone to Forks, I wouldn't be facing death now. But, terrified as I was, I couldn't bring myself to regret the decision. When life offers you a dream so far beyond any of your expectations, it's not reasonable to grieve when it comes to an end. The hunter smiled in a friendly way as he sauntered forward to kill me. 1.
