His novels and short stories have never gone out of print Sharles visited America twice, where he gave lectures, raised support for copyright laws, and recorded many of his impressions of America. In 1835 he met and became engaged to Catherine Hogarth. watching, video watching, the use of video games, time spent in front of the computer and listening to radio programs, and types of magazines read. Those concerned about the media's negative impact on body image, self-esteem, food, dieting and eating disorders need to consider a number of different interventions such as health communication campaigns, entertainment education, media advocacy and media literacy training. Such interventions need to be evaluated with respect to the media's portrayal of the idealized and unattainable images of beauty that young people are exposed to and its impact on disordered eating behaviours and eating disorders. While the media may contribute to the development of weight concerns and body dissatisfaction in children and adolescents, we cannot disregard the fact that media can also be used as an important tool for health promotion and prevention strategies. In the end I hope my research allows people to better understand the subject of body image issues

These characters are untrustworthy and cruel in the book and the film. For instance, the scene in which Jane is physically assaulted by her cousin appears in both book and film. Consider the importance of Sarah Poole. In the book, Jane suspects she is the person responsible for the fire and the stabbing at Thornfield Hall. In the film, Sarah is hardly mentioned. Adele talks about a mysterious woman who appears at night but this plot line is not developed further in the film. Evaluate the portrayal of Jane's strength of character. Many factors showing that she is a strong woman are present in the book and the film. For example, Edward Rochester asks Jane Eyre to detail her "tale of woe" but she refuses. Despite the harsh conditions she faces, her character is compelling because she remains strong and the film follows the book in emphasizing this point. Jane's rescue of Edward Rochester from fire is another action taken directly from the book that shows her courage. Opinion

Discuss the representation of the generation of fathers in Turgenev’s novel “Fathers and Sons”

saw these reforms were not fast or far-reaching enough. Thus, the generation of fathers is seen in the prevailing gentry, `', who ruled over the serfs and lands. Turgenev himself states, that « . , , . , . , : , ? -- , ». (Pisma IV, 380). Accordingly, Sukikh (1971:312) agrees that the progressive thinkers of the forties had lost their edge. This evaluation by the author himself sets a tone through which the connotation of the portrayal of the `generation of fathers' in Fathers and Sons can be assessed. By taking the title in the broader sense as indicating a generational, rather than a parental and filial relationship, the "generation of fathers" is represented by Nikolai Petrovich Kirsanov, Pavel Petrovich Kirsanov and Yevgeny Vassilievich Bazarov. The `fathers' can be seen as the contemporaries of the "superfluous man" and romantic idealists, who had a carefully shaped taste of arts and sense in beauty

his stoicism and masculinity. The quality of the language that Henry uses to describe Catherine's hair and her presence in bed testifies to the genuine depth of his feelings for her. Furthermore, because he allows Henry to narrate the book, Hemingway is able to suffuse the entire novel with the power and pathos of an elegy: A Farewell to Arms, which Henry narrates after Catherine's death, confirms his love and his loss. Catherine Barkley - Much has been written regarding Hemingway's portrayal of female characters. With the advent of feminist criticism, readers have become more vocal about their dissatisfaction with Hemingway's depictions of women, which, according to critics such as Leslie A. Fiedler, tend to fall into one of two categories: overly dominant shrews, like Lady Brett in The Sun Also Rises, and overly submissive confections, like Catherine Barkley in A Farewell to Arms. Hemingway, Fiedler maintains, was at his best dealing

Motifs Motifs are recurring structures, contrasts, or literary devices that can help to develop and inform the text's major themes. Masculinity - Readers of Hemingway's fiction will quickly notice a consistent thread in the portrayal and celebration of a certain kind of man: domineering, supremely competent, and swaggeringly virile. A Farewell to Arms holds up several of its minor male characters as examples of fine manhood. Rinaldi is a faithful friend and an oversexed womanizer; Dr. Valentini exhibits a virility to rival Rinaldi's as well as a bold competence that makes him the best surgeon. condition of man's mental state in life, continued after death. The tendency to see objects and qualities only in one dimension limiting and drawing the reader away from the true meaning of Dante's journey. Pound sees the Inferno as a satire on man's aimless turmoil and restlessness that continues to the root of Hell where it finds its end at the gate of Purgatory. Dante is represented as truth, intelligence, and love, and Pound generates a positive portrayal of Dante's work. Tate, Maritain, and Pound give insightful and pertinent observations of the Inferno, however, one major aspect, which was overlooked in their critiques, was the theological truths Dante uncovered on his imaginary journey through Hell. The reality of God, the Creator's love and man's choice is evidenced throughout the Inferno. On this spiritual pilgrimage, Dante has lost his way and tries to get back on the right path to gain salvation, but many temptations are faced along the

Arthur Conan Doyle

In his The History of Spiritualism (1926) Conan Doyle praised the psychic phenomena and spirit materialisations produced by Eusapia Palladino and Mina "Margery" Crandon. His work on this topic was one of the reasons that one of his short story collections, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, was banned in the Soviet Union in 1929 for supposed occultism. This ban was later lifted. Russian actor Vasily Livanov later received an Order of the British Empire for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes. Conan Doyle was friends for a time with the American magician Harry Houdini, who himself became a prominent opponent of the Spiritualist movement in the 1920s following the death of his beloved mother. Although Houdini insisted that Spiritualist mediums employed trickery (and consistently attempted to expose them as frauds), Conan Doyle became convinced that Houdini himself possessed supernatural powers, a view expressed in Conan Doyle's The Edge of the Unknown

1. Beowulf. The dating of Beowulf is still controversial. The poem is one of the earliest and greatest monuments of the Germanic literatures. The main stories of the poem (the fights of B.) are versions of common folk-tales, but the poet also introduces many incidental stories, some of which belong to the world of ancient Germanic legend. He writes his folk-tales and legends in a web of other events, mainly set in the Baltic Kingdoms. He shows a very rich and leisurely portrayal of this Baltic world, providing many customs like the close relationship between lord and man in the war-band and others. All this encouraged the supposition that the unknown author of the poem was himself a bard of the ancient type portrayed within the poem (a lord's scoop). However, many people propose that the author could be Christian poet, perhaps a monk, versed not only in old native traditions, but also in the culture and

He is best remembered as a novelist who wrote numerous seastories and the historical novels known as the Leatherstocking Tales. Among naval historians his works on early U.S. naval history have been widely received but were sometimes criticized by Cooper's contemporaries. Among his most famous works is the Romantic novel The Last of the Mohicans, often regarded as his masterpiece. Cooper's portrayal of Native Americans and the white settlers in The Leatherstocking Tales shows us a prime example of how acculturation operates in various types, steps, and on various levels. It is so comprehensive and credible that many see it as what had charmed the reading public at home and abroad and "determined how the world was to regard the American Indian" for a long time. Russian language in the first half of the 18th century set a stylistic precedent for the writers during the reign of Catherine the Great in the second half of the century. However, the themes and scopes of the works these writers produced were often more poignant, political and controversial. Alexander Nikolayevich Radishchev, for example, shocked the Russian public with his depictions of the socio-economic condition of the serfs. Empress Catherine II condemned this portrayal, forcing Radishchev into exile in Siberia. Others, however, picked topics less offensive to the autocrat. Nikolay Karamzin, 17661826, for example, is known for his advocacy of Russian writers adopting traits in the poetry and prose like a heightened sense of emotion and physical vanity, considered to be feminine at the time as well as supporting the cause of female Russian writers. 59 Instead of recognising their political agency, the media generally reinforces the dominant model of childhood by simultaneously positioning children as victims of adult abuse (often young and/or female children being killed, abducted or sexually abused) and as dangerous/deviant children who challenge the romantic outlook of western childhood, and pose credible threat to adult`s authority and hegemonic position. Such an unfairly, denigrating portrayal of children however is greatly undermining children`s opportunity to be taken seriously by adults. Their perceived intellectual incompetency and irrationality frames the childhood as an a-political arena of thought and practice in which children are portrayed as being `unable to articulate a set of coherent political views`.60 While on the one hand the Newsround news stories of the Iraq War encouraged children to discuss the war at school and in school assemblies, the actual
