It’s called different names in different states: South Australia – The Dog Fence, New South Wales – the Border Fence, Queensland – the Barrier Fence, Wild Dog Barrier Fence At first it was unsuccessfully used to try and keep out rabbits, with the fence built originally as a rabbit proof fence in 1884. It was more successful at keeping out pigs, kangaroos, emus. In 1914 it was converted into a dog-proof fence. The dog fence guards the world’s second largest sheep flock, after China’s. Without the barrier the sheep industry couldn’t exist. But more and more people – politicians, taxpayers, and animal lovers say that such a barrier would never be allowed today. With sections of it almost 100 years old, built by bushmen traveling with camels. By 1960 three states joined their barriers to form a single dog fence

The country of my dreams The counrty of my dreams is Australia. It lies in the Southern Hempishere between the Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean. One of the resones why i like Australia is its nature. It is recognized as a megadiverse counrty. Its isolation from other continets explains much of the strangeness of its animal and plant life. There are a lot of interesting animals like kangaroos, koalas and wombats and birds like emus and kookaburras. Australia is a highly developed country. It has the sixth largest per capita income in the world. It is said that Melbourne is the world's most liveable cities. Another reason why Australia appeals fo me, is its beautiful beaches and climate. Winters are mils and summers are hot and sunny. Australia's beaches are always full of surfers, and one day i hope i will be one of them . Australians have a very good quality of life
When in Rome do as Romans do Australia is located in the South-East of the world and there is very warm, now there is approximately 30°C. Australia has a population of almost 20 million people and they speak in English. Half of the people there are christians. One of the only things I knew about australia are that there is very warm and there are a lot of kangaroos. In Australia the appearance of people is very formal. Men wear dark business suit and a tie, women may wear a dress or a scirt and blouse. For casual clothing there are pants for both men and women. Australians are friendly and open, but directness and punctuality is very important. They maintain good eye contact during conversations. They bring small gift of chocolate, wine or flowers if invited to someone's home, but gift giving is not very common in bussiness. They
And how they play it? I'll like if you will talk to me about it. It seems a very interesting instrument. Australins have a strong sense of humour and I have read that they will tell anti-English jokes to the English, anti-lawyer jokes to the lawyers and anti- mother-in-law jokes to mothers-in-law. Is is true? Did Australians laugh about you? They are very easy-going by nature. They put a high value on their leisure time. I hope that when I go to Australia, I will see kangaroos and koalas. I have seen they only in Zoo, not in nature. Did you see any animals in nature? Do you know that the cutest animal spends 80% of its time asleep in eucalyptus tree? I didn't know it before. Australian most famous landmarks are an ancient rock in the desert, a modern opera house in Sydney harbour and a huge coral reef off the north-east coast. I remember when you talked about your dream you wanted to visit Sydney opera house. Did you made your dream true? I hope you did it
The climate in those parts is suitable for farming and ranching. In Northern Australia there is a tropical climate. The coastal areas have the biggest amount of rainfall. In most parts of Australia rainfall is very low. 6. Animals Australia is the only continent on earth where marsupials live; they are also known as pouched mammals and egglying mammals. Ordinary mammals live also in Australia and these mammals are mostly imported there. Marsupials are kangaroos, wombats, koalas, Tasmanian wolfs and Tasmanian devils. The Koala is found all along the eastern coast of Australia from near Adelaide to the southern part of Cape York Peninsula, and as far into the hinterland as there is enough rainfall to support suitable forests. They are the cutest and lovelies animals of Australia. Koala accepts humans but if you really disturb them, they become aggressive. The Koala lives almost entirely on eucalyptus leaves. Koala has very long
The soft-feathered, brown, flightless birds reach up to 2 m in height. The Emu is common over most of mainland Australia, although it avoids heavily populated areas. Emus can travel great distances fast, if necessary, can sprint at 50 km/h for some distance at a time. They eat a variety of plants and insects. Emus are farmed for their meat, oil and leather. The Kangaroo is a common marsupial from the islands of Australia and New Guinea. There are 47 species of them. Kangaroos can hop up to 74 km per hour and go over 9 m in one hop. These shy animals live about 6 years in the wild and up to 20 in captivity. Most of them are active at night. Many kangaroos are in danger of extinction. Kangaroos eat grass, leaves, and roots. They swallow their food without chewing it and later regurgitate a cud and chew it. They need little water; they can go for months without drinking, and they dig their own water wells.

They are born as small, bean-sized hairless babies that climb up into the safety of the pouch. After 33 weeks the little kangaroos have to leave the pouch. At top speed kangaroos can make 4m leaps and reach the velocity of 50 km/h.

..............................................10 2 Introduction If you were asked to show on a world map the regions with the most biodiversity, your finger would probably end up pointing at the Amazon, the Congo Basin or the island of Borneo. But I chose New Guinea, an island that represents no more than 1% of the world's landmass, an array of extraordinary animals and plants have also flourished, such as tree kangaroos and birds of paradise. Close to 10% of the world's vertebrates are concentrated here, while 7% of the world's higher (vascular) plants grow on the island's productive soils. 3 Geography Papua New Guinea consists of over 600 islands and lies in the middle of the long chain of islands stretching from mainland South-East Asia. The mainland and larger islands are mountainous and rugged, divided by large fertile upland valleys. Fast-
In Australia bushfires are very often to happen. Because the trees and shrubs do not lose their leaves in winter, but grow throughout the year. But when the dry leaves and branches fall down, then there is a lot of dry material and that helps bushfires to burn. 5 Animals Scientists estimate that the continent is home to more than one million plant and animal species. Many of these are found nowhere else on the planet. Among these animals are kangaroos, wombats, koalas. They carry their babies in pouches. There are platypuses and tiny anteaters (echidna) too, which are the only mammals in the world that lay eggs. Among the birds are emus, lyrebirds and black swans. When a platypus specimen first reached to Europe people thought it was a fake, sewn together from bits of other animals. The platypus, the strangest of Australia’s animals, is a living reminder of ancient, extinct creatures. The best known animal that lives in Australia is the
inch or an inch a half long. It crawls into its mother's pouch and attaches itself to a nipple there. There it stays almost three months, when it begins to stick its head out. It is six months old before it is big and strong to leave the pouch. The biggest of the fifty diffrent kinds is the red kangaroo. They have big strong back legs and tails, and an adult can measure 2.4 metres high. They can jump more than four metres and travel at seventy kilometres an hour. Kangaroos eat grass and leaves and live in groups about twelve. Everyone loves the sleepy gray koalas. Like kangaroos, they have s pouch on their fronts for their babies. After six months there, baby koalas ride on their mother's back. They live in eucalyptus trees, sleeping for eighteen hours, and eating one kilo of leaves, each day. They drink almost nothing. The word koala means "no water." In the seas and rivers of northern Australia crocodiles can be found. They are five or six metres long

conditions and these areas remained unpopulated for a long time. As the colonies along the south and east coast developed, they refused to receive any more convicts. From the middle of the 19th century no convicts were brought from Britain to Australia. Ordinary mammals live also in Australia and these mammals are mostly imported there. Marsupials are kangaroos, wombats, koalas, Tasmanian wolves and Tasmanian devils. Today marsupials are dying out, cause cats and dogs and rabbits, who were exported to Australia many, many years ago, are destroying the gentler marsupials. There is only one marsupial still alive in the USA today- the opossum. But there are also very strange kind of animals, they have hair, like dogs and cats but they also lay eggs- these are the spiny anteater and the platypus
promote assimilation. Nowadays many Aborigines live in the desert area, there are estimated of 200 000 of them in all over Australia. They have begun to forget their traditions and heritage. Recent Australian laws have made it possible for the Aborigines to regain their land. This also has caused problems because they went back to their land and started living like they did centuries ago collecting berries and seeds, hunting kangaroos and other animals. Most of them live in very poor conditions and their children are taught more about their own culture than general knowledge in schools. In conclusion I would say that in a way the Aborigines and the Maori are very similar. They both had quite a savage way of life (savage to our minds) and invaders tried to bring them out of it. Both the people had their land invaded and they had to cope with the difficulties followed. They also used to gather food in a similar way
they led a very hard life. At the beginning of the19th century free settlers began to arrive from Britain in large numbers since it offered many stimulating opportunities. The Aborigines were cruelly suppressed, and it is only recently that white Australians have begun to acknowlege Aborigines' rights to their sacred lands. The settlers soon discovered that many of the animals as well as the plants of Australia were unlike those that were found anywhere else. Among te animals were kangaroos and wombats and koalas. They carry their babies in pouches. There were platypuses and spiny anteaters, too the only mammals in the world that lay eggs. Among the strange birds were emus, lyrebirds, and black swans. The early settlers on the coast were suht in between the mountains and the sea. For years they couldn't make their way across the mountains. When they did, they found great streches of grassland. Some of the early settlers had been sheepmen in Britain
