The observed range of expression is now recognized to be regulated by non-genetic factors, including prenatal environmental influences (Wolf, et al., 1996). "Maternal effects provide a powerful avenue for [altering] the course of the future by adding information content and material content. That content can be...anything that can influence how an embryo develops" [ibid]. In regard to influential material content, the role of the mother's biochemistry in fetal development is well known. We are particularly sensitive to the importance of maintaining appropriate nutritional status during pregnancy. Everything changed-- literally overnight--once he switched to testosterone enanthate, a variation seldom seen in the medical profession in the United States. Who made the suggestion? An advanced bodybuilder who knew his biochemistry. It shouldn't have made a difference, yet it did. Do doctors normally take advantage of the 50+ years of experience that professional bodybuilders have testing, even synthesizing, esters of testosterone? No. Most doctors view bodybuilders as cavalier amateurs, and bodybuilders view doctors as too risk-averse to do anything innovative. This separation of the expertise means both sides suffer suboptimal results.

The sense of expanding horizons must have resembled that felt by chemists when Friedrich Wohler synthesized urea, demonstrating that life processes operate under well-known chemical laws and are therefore subject to experimentation and control, and leading to today's vast strides in biochemistry. When Friedman subsumed cryptanalysis under statistics, he likewise flung wide the door to an armamentarium to which cryptology had never before had access. Its weapons—measures of central tendency and dispersion, of fit and skewness, of probability and sampling and significance—were ideally fashioned to deal with the statistical behavior of letters and words. Cryptanalysts, seizing them with alacrity, have wielded them with notable success ever since.
