The Most Influential Figures in British History

The Most Influential Figures in British History There are many important historical figures, who have helped shape Britain into what it is today. In my opinion Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria and Winston Churchill are the ones who stand out and have had the biggest impact on British history. Firstly, Elizabeth I made a great impression on British history as she kept England from major wars during her reign, the kingdom expanded and she supported culture. The rule of Elizabeth I can be called a peaceful time as England did not enter any huge conflicts. She managed to keep good relations with other great countries. However, the defeat of the Spanish Armada left no one questioning the superiority of the British navy. In addition, the kingdom’s territories grew during her reign, Virginia in America being named after „The Virgin Queen“. Queen Elizabeth I also valued culture. Arts flourished while Elizabeth was i...

An event in my childhood

My childhood story Whenever I think about my childhood, one story comes to my mind. A story I am proud of. It’s about how I helped my one year older brother when he got stung by a bee. It’s not just an ordinary story because my brother, back then, was allergic to bees. And because of that I may have saved his life. It all began on a sunny summer day at my grandfather’s country home. We had a dog back then and he had his own fenced garden with a doghouse in it. Me and my brother were just fooling around outside doing funny stuff. At some point he decided to go let the dog out. The poles that were holding the fence up were holo inside and the bees thought that it was a great place to make a hive in. I can’t remeber why, but my brother for some reason leaned over the fence pole and looked into it. That’s when my brother got stung near to his eyes. He immediately yelled at me that he can’t see and wanted my ...

Strategies of creating a dominant party – the case of UR

University of Tartu Faculty of Social Sciences and Education Institute of Government and Politics Marie Allikmaa The strategies of creating a dominant party the case of United Russia Tartu 2011 After the collapse of USSR in 1991, many observers expected Russia to develop into a competitive party system. Yet, the reality quickly challenged this view. The developments of party politics in post-Soviet Russia have accurately been described in terms of a pendulum effect, as in the 2000s, Russia's party system did finally begin to take for, but with a remarkable twist. Following the break of one-party rule, Russia's party system became strongly fragmented - during the 1995 parliamentary elections, 43 parties competed for popular votes (McFault 1996: 90). In the 21st century, the pendulum has moved back, ...

Dear social worker

Dear social worker I am writing because of my concern about my elderly neighbor. She is a really friendly 80-year old lady but she is not able to do everyday jobs to live normal life. I have helped her to cope with everyday life but next year I will leave to other city to attend university and I think she is not able to continue without any help. Usually after school I go and visit her to ask if she needs something from shop or pharmacy. She also has problems using her mobile phone to call her friends or healthcare persons, which I also has helped her to do. Once a week I have helped her with cleaning her apartment. Sometimes when I visit her I have seen that she just needs to talk to somebody to feel happy. I have tried to help her as much as possible. I hope we can manage to find proper solutions to this problem. I wait for Your thoughts about which would be the best way to her. I look forward to Your response Best wishes Daisi Tann...

The truth pushes our world forward

The truth pushes our world forward 1. Truth has helped us to study and learn more about our world, not like religion and bible have done. Religion did not let science to evolve, but thanks to the sciences like Galileo Galilei science evolved because he was brave enough to say that earth is not the centre of the world. 2. Truth always comes out, Crusade wars began because of Turks conquered the holy lands and mistreated the Christians not because Christians wanted to increase their religion that happened later after the Crusade wars. 3. The Bible put humans to believe that we all are Childs of Adam and Eve but in fact humans evolved from apes and the truth helped the science to find the real origin of people. 4. Many people say that they have seen UFO-s but most of us do not believe them and the truth of alien existence may hid...

Essay on Iron Man

Iron Man essay A superhero is a character with extraordinary powers who is dedicated to protecting the public. However, this definition can be matched with different sets of character traits. This essay discusses what makes Iron Man special and memorable. Besides literally being strong, which a superhero obviously needs to be, Iron Man aka Tony Stark was also highly intelligent. That's what actually helped him in most situations rather than mindlessly beating the opponent. Tony Stark had graduated with advanced degrees in physics and engineering at the age of 17 from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. When imprisoned and forced to create a weapon of mass destuction in the movie Iron Man, Stark was able to build an armor suit and a reactor to escape. His extensive knowledge about quantum mechanics and artificial intelligence helped him to produce a new e...

A day to remember

The family was extremely excited that day. My parents had taken me to the mandir the previous day and my bag was packed with great care. I was to go to School for the first time in my life.I was six years old and I still remember the day I first went to school. My aunt came to drop me to my classroom and helped me to get familiar with my teacher and class. I hated the thought of being away from home for so many hours. Tears rolled down my checks as I got off the house and held my aunt’s hand.My aunt could sense my fear and tried to cheer me up . I fet a little better as I saw many other boys and girls entering the class where I had to go.my aunt left me in the classroom and drove to the house. I felt my heart sink as I saw go but I soon began to feel better.the times passed quickly and I started making new friends so I began loving the school. However even today, when I think of my first day at school 1 remember the fear that I had and ...

Powerpoint William Blake'st (inglise keeles)

William Blake William Blake was borned in 1757 and died in 1827. He was an English poet, painter, and printmaker. He was the third of seven children. The Bible was an early and profound influence on Blake. At the age of 21, he was to become a professional engraver. After two years, Basire sent his apprentice to copy images from the Gothic churches in London His experiences in Westminster Abbey helped form his artistic style and ideas. Later life and career Blake's marriage to Catherine remained a close and devoted one until his death. Blake taught Catherine to write, and she helped him to colour his printed poems. William and Catherine's first daughter and last child might be Thel described in The Book of Thel who was conceived as dead. Politics Blake was not active in any well-established political party Blake was both concerned about senseless wars of kingdoms, and the blighting effects of the industrial revolution. Much of hi...

Humpty Dumpty from Through the Looking-Glass

My name is Humpty Dumpty a perfect name for me as it means the good and handsome shape I am. I hate to be called and egg. I think it is very provoking. I look rather like any human being I have two eyes, a nose and a mouth. Maybe my head is a bit bigger than usual but it is very beautiful. Actually I am glad to be a bit different from humans as I don't really see the different in their faces. I mean they all look alike. It would be way easier if some had, let's say, both eyes on one side of their nose. I love my life. I sit here, with my legs crossed, on this high and narrow wall and I am not afraid to fall. Well and even if I did fall, which will never happen, then the king promised me to send all his horses and his men and put me in my place again. But there is no need for it since this wall is my home and I am very sure in my capability of staying here. My most valuable asset is my cravat. It sometimes upsets me when others can...

Estonian War of Independence

Estonian War of Independence During World War I the greatest colonial power in Europe the Russian Empire seized to exist. On its ruins the formerly enchained nations founded their own states. Among them was the Estonian Republic, officially declared on February 24, 1918. When Germany surrendered to the Western Allies on November 11, 1918 a strategic vacuum arose in Eastern Europe. The new rulers of Russia the Bolsheviks decided to use it as a proper moment to re-conquer their lost territories. The ultimate goal was international communist revolution and Germany was the first standing on their way. Thus on November 13, 1918 the Government of Soviet Russia denounced peace with Germany. On November 16 the Commander-in-Chief of the Red Army, Jukums Vacietis, gave orders to start a massive attack on a long front from the Gulf of Finland to the Ukraine. On November 28, two divisions of the Red Army (altogether 12,000 troops) crossed...

History of the USA.

The United States of America. History. For thousands of years America was unknown to Europe. There lived only the native people, who had come from Siberia many thousand years ago by a land bridge. They had spread over the country, varying enormously from nomadic food gatherers to fishing societies. Then the Vikings visited Canada around AD 1000, but they did not stay. In 1492 Christopher Columbus discovered America while trying to reach India. He named the native people Indians, because he though he had reached India. He didn't stay either and in the sixteenth century the first Europeans to settle in America were the Spanish, the English and the French. The first village founded by the English settlers was in Virginia in 1607. It was called Jamestown. They didn't have good relations with the Indians and many of them died. But Pocahontas, the daughter of an Indian chief, became their friend and helped them....

The Cement Garden Character Sketch

The Cement Garden - Ian McEwan Character Sketch - Tom Tom is the brother of the narrator of the story. He is the youngest child in the family. Tom was a 6-year-old little boy with pale skin. He had a bit big ears, black hair and his smile seemed idiotic. Tom was tender but mettlesome. Since he was the youngest child in the family he was mostly left out due to his age. Other siblings had their own activities together and Tom was too young to understand or take part. I.g. the game of scientists examining a specimen from outer space. His relationship with his father had changed after his father had become semi-invalid. After the incident Tom’s father was very severe with him. Pet therapy

Pet therapy.  A kind of treatment designed to stimulate people who are withdrawn or uncommunicative has recently been given a new name: pet therapy. It has given difficult children, lonely old people and even anti-social prisoners a completely new outlook on life  Even though pet therapy is only now being widely used, it is not a new idea. In the eighteenth century an English doctor, William Tuke, filled the grounds of a hospital for mentally disturbed people with chickens, rabbits and goats. At a time when people were usually punished for strange behavior rather than helped, this was a radical new approach to treating the mentally disturbed. Tuke's idea was that patients could learn self-control by caring for creatures weaker than themselves.  This is an idea which has persisted. In New York, horses, cows, cats and dogs were recruited to heal soldiers w...

Robinson Crusoe

The people who are ill or some kind of an accident has happened to them need help. Medicine is the science and art of healing. It is a science because it is based on knowledge gained through careful study and experimentation. Medicine develops very quickly. Nowadays the doctors can do almost anything they want. When a man lost a limb there was a big possibility that he would lose too much blood and die or get a blood poisoning before that time. Now the doctors can ...

Complaint letter

Dear Sir, My name is ... I am writing this letter following my stay at your hotel, Hotel Titanic. I stayed in room 603 from September 3rd to September 10th. I am wiriting becouse of the poor level of service and overall an unpleasant experience. When I first got to the hotel, I had to wait for 15 minutes in the reception before a young woman came, and helped us book in. Throughout my stay I was served mediocre food. The bathroom wasen't cleaned properly and the room servise was pretty bad. The room servise rearly changed my bed sheets and towels. There were 6 power-cuts wich each lasted for atleast 2 minutes. Worse still, I had an extremly noisy neighbour who was entertaining his visitors until 4 AM, two nights in a row. I even complained to the manager but that didn't impove the situation until the third day. Overall the stay wasen't worth the cost but I am not asking for a chargeback. I just hope that you will improve your customer...

Through the Looking-Glass

Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll The BLACK kitten had once again made a mess in the living room with a ball of worsted you see it could have not been the white kitten, Snowbell, as she was having her face washed by Dina. Alice caught the black kitten and settled into an arm-chair to wind up the worsted again. Soon forgetting all about it she started wondering if Kitty could play chess. And thus her favourite game of "Let's pretend" started. Suddenly the Looking-Glass House caught Alice's attention. She had always been wondering about the Looking-Glass world. It was so tempting. Without even noticing she was on the mantelpiece and through the looking-glass. The room was quite uninteresting and untidy. But there were some interesting things the pictures on the wall were alive and so were the pawns on the chessboard and the words in the book were only...

Friend

Friends are a pretty important part of most people's lives. Good friend is the person who gives you the better of the two choices, hold your hand when you're scared, helps you fight off those who try to take advantage of you, thinks of you at times when you are not there, reminds you of what you have forgotten, helps you put the past behind you but understands when you need to hold on to it a little longer, stays with you so that you have confidence, goes out of their way to make time for you, helps you clear up your mistakes, helps you deal with pressure from others, smiles for you when they are sad, helps you become a better person! No one can make you laugh quite the way your friends can. Most importantly of all friends love you for who you are. I know that when I am going through a tough situation, I always ask my closest friends for advice. No matter where we go or who we become, never forget who helped us get there. There'...

What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Tourism

What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Tourism? In today's world tourism is vital part of economy. Although tourism has became main source of income to many countries, it was not so couple of decades ago. This young branch of industry started developing in the second half of last century, when people had more money and sources than ever before. Importance of tourism to countries such as Egypt, Greece and Spain can not be questioned, as employment, service industry and opportunity to sell goods, is related to it. Tourism has also helped to build up certain regions, which otherwise would still be struggling in poverty. Futhermore, to make country desirable destination, governments have to keep crime rate under control, which makes life safer for locals as well. On the negative side, relentless waves of tourists increase our carbon footprint. Transportation increases pollution and creates gridlocks. Often big hote...

My hobby

MY HOBBY My hobby is roller-skating. I roller-skate whenever I can cause roller-skating is my favorite hobby. This hobby got started when I was a little boy. I had always wanted my parents to teach me how to ride with roller-skates. Soon they got fed up and tired of my bagging to get some roller-skates. So they bought me a pair of roller-skates. So as soon as I could, I learned to roller-skate. I started with just standing still with them. Soon I could roller-skate across the street. Now I roller-skate just about everywhere where it's possible. The wonderful thing about roller-skating is that I do not have to buy a bus ticket. For example, I do not have to be in traffic congestion. Also I do not have to buy some lamellae tires to drive in winter because I can ride a bus in winter. I can ride in some indoor skating park at winter. Roller-skates provide the rider with so much information about balancing a...

The Great Fire kokkuvõte

The great Fire The Great Fire of London of September 1666 was one of the moost famous incidents in Stuart England. It was the second tragedy to hit the city in the space of 12 months. The fire started in Pudding Lane. The fire started in a baker's shop owned by Thomas Farriner who was the king's baker. His maid failed to put out the ovens at the end of the night. Once it started, the fire spread quickly. The city was basically made out of wood and with September following on from the summer, the city was very dry. Strong winds fanned the flames. In 1665, during the plague, the king, Charles II, had fled in London. His plan, in 1666 (he stayed in London and took charge of the operation to save the city) was to create fire-breaks. The heat created by the fire was so great that the lead roof on the old St Paul's Cathedral melted. The actual human casualty rate was remarkably small with possibly only 5 people dying in this fire. The...

Stephen wiltshire

Stephen wiltshire 1 slaid Stephen was born in London, United Kingdom to West Indian parents on 24th April, 1974. As a child he was mute, and did not relate to other people. Aged three, he was diagnosed as autistic. He had no language and lived entirely in his own world. 2.slaid At the age of five, Stephen was sent to Queensmill School in London, where it was noticed that the only pastime he enjoyed was drawing. It soon became apparent he communicated with the world through the language of drawing; first animals, then London buses, and finally buildings. The instructors at Queensmill School encouraged him to speak by temporarily taking away his art supplies so that he would be forced to ask for them. Stephen responded by making sounds and eventually uttered his first word - "paper." He learned to speak fully at the age of nine. His early illustrations depicted animals and cars; he is still extremely interested in american cars and is...

Report to the Board of Governors

Report to the Board of Governors. Introduction The main principal aim of this report is to describe a fund-raising day organised for disadvantaged children and to make some recommendations for the next year. Methods of fund raising Our charity organisation has been going in for collecting money to support disadvantaged children in Britain already for seven years. There are some verified ways to collect money, such as a street collection, house-to-house collection and jumble sales. A large amount of money was raised by the house-to house collection. It`s about a 40% of the whole money we got for these children. Also income from the street collection is really nice as well 30%. So, a 20% of the pie chart I made takes the jumble sale and 10% - other ways of collecting money. Overview This year it was decided to organise a fund-raising day for the charity. It was the nice and cheerful time. Many people agreed to...
