On new years day people talk about turning a new leaf. Many Americans make new years resolutions promising themselves to improve their behaviour. Typical resolutions are to spend less money, give up smoking, begin a diet or control one's temper 7) HALLOWEEN Every year on October 31, Hallowe'en, or all souls' eve is celebrated in the United States and Canada. In Great Britain it is a popular night, too. In the north of England, Scotland and Ireland people celebrate it more than in the south. At Halloween people have parties and play Halloween games. One of the most popular games is ,,bobbing for apples". Americans like to dress up in costumes and go trick-or-treating. If grownups refuse to supply a treat, the children may play a trick. The typical tricks are: soaping windows, turning over dustbins and sticking pins into doorbells to keep them ringing. This celebration goes back to hundreds of years, to the Celtic times when it was a pagan festival

They had occupied the whole continent by 30 000 years ago. At that time Tasmania was still part of the mainland. About 20 000 years ago the ice began to melt and the rising water level cut Tasmania off from the mainland. Traders from what is now Indonesia are thought to have been visiting
Sixty million years ago Australia and its nearby islands were separated from the rest of the world by a great upheaval. They were cut off from Asia by the ocean. Very few people and almost no animals visited Australia before English colonists began to settle there in 1788. During all those 60 million years the native Australian mammals developed by themselves, undisturbed by the animals developing elsewhere. Australia is the only continent except Antarctica that is all south of the equator. It's name means "southland". Since it is south of the equator, its seasons are just the opposite of ours. It has summer while we have winter and the other way round. Sometimes Australia is called the island continent. There is a good reason why. It is an island. The Inhabitants Two hundred years ago there were no white people in Australia. The only inhabitants were dark-skinned people who were still living in a Stone Age

The United Kingdom is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean in the west, the North Sea in the east, the Norwegian Sea in the north, and the English Channel, also known as La Manche, in the south and it also separates the country from the continent of Europe. The neighbours of the United Kingdom are Iceland in the north-west, Norway in the east and France in the south. Britain also has many dependant territories which are scattered throughout the world and are the remains of the huge former British Empire. *Hadrian's Wall It was built by the emperor Hadrian and it marked the Northen border of the Roman empire. Hadrian's Wall was built, beginning in 122, to keep Roman Britain safe from hostile attacks from the Picts. The wall stretched from the North Sea to the Irish Sea. In addition to the wall, the Romans built a system of small forts called milecastles. Sixteen larger forts holding from 500 to 1000 troops were built into the wall, with large gates on the north face. To the south of the wall the Romans dug a wide ditch with high earth banks. *The Picts, Caledonia The Romans called Scotland 'Caledonia' because the dominant tribe of Picts they encountered was the Calidonii. Romans thought they were barbarian savages, but actually they had an advanced, cultured society. There was no slavery amongst them and women for instance had a higher standing than in Roman society. The Picts fought the Romans. The Picts- ,,The Painted Ones"- spoke Pict-Celtic.
The Americans were led by George Washington who in 1788 became the country's first president. On the 4th of July, 1776 the Declaration of Independence was written and that day is now celebrated as the Day of Independence. The war ended in 1788 and during the time following it, the Americans bought large pieces of land from foreign countries to themselves, creating a big country. By 1860 America was a big country but there was a big difference between the free North and the slavery South. The biggest problem was the issue of slaves and due to that the Civil War broke out in 1861. President Abraham Lincoln tried hard to unite the country again. Though both sides were strong, the North had more men, more factories and stronger leaders. In 1865 the South accepted the loss. Lincoln was shot in 1865 and the next president wasn't strong enough to unite the country, so problems weren't solved.
