Books Today and Tomorrow

Books Today and Tomorrow Why is it important to read books? Do people read less books than in the past? Will people read less in the future? Books have always played a great role in our lives and reading them is highly important. It increases knowledge and expands vocabulary, which integrates to writing. Reading books makes a person more intelligent and it gives a different perspective. Nowadays people tend to read less books than they used to. The main reason for this catastrophy is the development of technology. People would rather watch moving pictures in the television than pick up an old book covered in dust. In the past, when there were no television or computers to entertain people, books were basically the only amusement. On the other hand the lifestyle of ours has gotten tremendously busy and some do not find the time to just sit back and relax by reading. With the devel...

Pros and cons of social networking

Pros and cons of social networking “Connectivity is a human right.“ Said Mark Zuckerberg Dear friends. Today I’m here to talk about the pros and cons of social networking. We all use internet everyday but we don’t really know the influence of social networking in our lives. I think social networking sites allow people to improve their relationships and make new friends. It is good that people can instant message with people all the time all over the world. It makes people feel like they are not alone. However the con to this is that social media causes people to spend less time interacting face to face. I think it’s not good because if they are always in social media talking with friends then people can’t interact with people outside the internet. If the people are not used to speaking in real life then it could be difficult to impress yourself with words to other people and because of this it could be d...

Books today and tomorrow

Books today and tomorrow Ervin Sagor Books have always played a great role in life and it is important to read them but nowadays people read less than they used to do. When I think about our relationship with books a question comes to my mind: `'Will there be books in the future?'' I think people read more books in the past because then there were no television and radio to entertain people. In the present people rather watch moving images from television than pick up a dusty old book. My opinion on importance of books is that there are books with empty storyline as well as there are books that are considered as true gems which contain knowledge and a great story and the importance of these books is immeasurable. Considering the fact that people in the future will be even lazier than they are now shows that the books will stay on the bookshelves or will b...

What I Think of Homereading

What I Think of Homereading? I think that homereading is important and a good way to educate. Finding a good book to read is not only interesting entertainment but a good way to learn. I think that homereading is necessary for those who want to learn English. Everyone should read books if they have free time. Reading is one of the best things to do in your free time. It is very exciting to read a good book. There are many categories of books: fantasy, romantic, fiction, nonfiction, action, adventure, historical, children's and teen's books, biography, educating books, cooking books. The genre of the book depends what the reader likes to read about. I think that everyone can find something interesting for themselves, they just need to search. Is there a place for libraries in future?

Is there a place for libraries in future? I think in the past almost everyone liked just to sit in a library and to read good books. But what do young people think about libraries today? Millions of people around the world enjoy reading and in my opinion it will continue. I am convinced that we will always need in a library. Since childhood people learn to read, have fun and play, study and do homework at libraries. There are so many very great books, and every year their number increases. May be someday people will even start building libraries on the water. Then we could not only read books but also rest and travel. On the other hand libraries could be built for example as hotel. Surely this library will be very popular. May be people would live there until you read the book through. Accordingly you will not have to carry books here and there and it is one more reason to think about building this library. I...

"The Printed Word will Never Die" essee

The Printed Word Will Never Die Books have been around for ages. People have used to aquire new knowledge and experience for a very long time which makes books the oldest source of new knowledge. For some youth, reading is a very hard thing to do, some just cannot pick up a book and start reading, most would rather hang out with friends or play computergames. Furthermore, some youth also prefer watching movies to reading, because a film is a lot easier to follow, reading a book is sometimes exhausting and tiring. But all that said, there is something about books, if a book is truly interesting, then something just forces you to read it, you read a page and you just have to know what comes next, what is going to happen, how will the story end. Page after page after page, until eventually without notice, you have finished the book. I think that reading can be a very enjoyable activity, but some people just do no...

Why read? essay

Why read? Everybody has their own reasons for reading. Reading has been the main entertainment for centuries, although, nowadays people read less and less. It is probably due to the fact that in our modern world we have television and internet. Most of people are mainly reading for entertainment. They think that reading is a good way to spend their time and moreover, they find it also very useful. Secondly, in addition that reading is interesting it is also the best way to get information. We can read about other cultures or even learn languages from books. Reading widens our horizon and makes us wise. There are lots of reasons for reading. Every group such as students or grownups have their main reasons. Students read because they have obligatory literature. We need paper books

WE NEED PAPER BOOKS We really need paper books. Now a days, most of teenagers think that studying by a computers or mobile phones is much more useful, but actually ist's not. A lot of people spend their time at home using a computer, when people start doing it in schools too, they are going to be blind soon, because it affects your eyes. People should really think about their future more. I understand if you are doing some schoolworks on the computer, but definitely not all of those. If you read lots of books, it developes you reading speed and it will be useful if you can read fast and if it sounds nice. Also if you are on the computer all the time, you can't write soon, too. And then the next generation in Estonia is going to be like Africa, that people can't read or write. So we should still use paper books, it's cheaper and much more useful.

The themes dealt with in a book are simply not relevant.

The themes dealt with in a book are simply not relevant to young people today When we create a chart of things that young people like to do in their free time, reading would probably not be in the first three. Is it related to the themes discussed in books and are those themes irrelevant to young people today? Obligatory books in basic school and gymnasium, are mostly from the previous century or from even earlier. Those books are mainly discussing love, wars and relations having one but those books don't talk about everything. They have their confines and mainly concentrate on descriptions and less on the story. But young people want their own picture from the book, they don't need every detail described. When we think more about the themes disussed in obligatory books, then they are also hold in check. Here is the second problem, youngsters can't relate to those topics. For example, they are only describing a feeling, lik...

Jakko Viilo, 11.c Books are not absolutely dead things Books have been our mates many centuries. They give you a lot of knowledge, they make you feel happy, but sometimes also sad too. If you have read any book through, one is certain your life is not the same anymore as it was. So, a question comes to my mind if books are material things, they can not speak, they can not do anything to you, they just lay on the table, then how they can influence your life sometimes so much? They are all written by humans. But the interesting thing actually is, that in his lifetime, human being is the smartest on this planet and can make big things, but this is all transient. Humans die. But if human creates something, for example, a book, then it may live centuries. Books are like the continuation of the book writers life. Human's mind can fo...

Inglise keele esese - Which will survive - a traditional paper book or an e-book

Which will survive - a traditional paper book or an e-book? The e-book versus traditional paper book battle is becoming a hot topic nowadays. There are lots of arguments about the pros and cons of paper book and an e-book but which will survive? Firstly, a paper book is reasily portable and usually cheap. Also it does not harm your eyes that much. To read a paper book you will probably need a light source and obviously you are not carrying it always around. Furthermore you can not carry all your books with you all the time because they are just too heavy. Also paper books are not very environmental friendly. Secondly, an e-book has a lot of good qualities, for example, you can purchase a book every time you want in spite of going to the book store. Also, if you have a smartphone or a laptop you will always have your books with you, just in case you want to read. An e-book is also more environmental friendly. But an e-book has also...

Libraries. We know a lot of things thanks to books, but we do not know exactly when and where they originated, and what should be considered the first book in the world. Ancient document, written on parchment, papyri and vellum can hardly be qualified as books the way we understand the word today. Centuries went before paper replaced parchment and papyri. In the 15 th century Johann Gutenberg invented a mechanical process of duplicating texts, which we today call book printing. The first book was printed between 1444 and 1446, so these years can be considered as the beginning years of book printing. His most important preserved printings are the 40 copies of the Bible. By the end of the 15 th century there were about 1000 print-shops in Europe already. The oldest Estonian book dates back to 1535. Libraries form a vital part of education. They make available-through books, f...

E-book – the book of the future

E-book the book of the future An e-book is an abbrevation for electronic book, also known as a digital book. It is an equivalent to the conventional printed book. It can be read on a personal computer or hand-held device specially designed for this puropse. Are the e-books and conventional ones competitors to each other? Will they both have independent groups of readers in future or will the future belong only to the e-books? What are the pros and cons of each? Let's have a brief look at the advantages and disadvantages of both. In August 2009 it has been estimated that there are over 2 million free books available for download. Our father and mothers recall times when one had to stand in queues to get the desired books. An e-book can be offered indefinitely, without ever going "out of print". The collection of e-books takes certainly significantly less room than the same collection of conventional books. An e-reader can potentially ...

His father was a fisherman and he often took his son with him when he went fishing. When Lomonosov was a little boy he wanted to study. This was difficult because books were rare and expensive and because there was no school in the village. However, the village priest taught Lomonosov to read and write. After that, Mikhail Lomonosov began to look for books. One man in the village had an arithmetic book. When Lomonosov saw this book, he ased the man to give it to him. During his journey, he is a completely different man. Finally he meets his wife, but everything has changed. I really enjoyed reading this book, because it was really instructive. The story was full of lessons and ethical matters to use in life. Theatre: Theatre as compared to film and literature

Theatre: Theatre as compared to film and literature Im going to compare theatre to film and literature. There are some seally big differences between thatre and film or literature. Firstly the main difference between literature and theatre is that if you read a book, you have to imagine the whole image in your head and thus everybody sees one thing differently, but in theatre you have a real live picture in front of you. Also in books the feelings, thoughts and emotions are described better than in theatre performances. Secondly, in theatre performances you can only see one stage and one place but in movies the situations are depicted in various places, for example on streets and other places, which can not be depicted on a stage so easily. In addition to that, in books all the situations are decribed in very small details and that is a really big advantage of reading books. In movies and thatre all situations are...

My languages I love different languages. I mean, I really, really love different languages. I also believe and have been told that I pick them up rather easily. That might be true, although I did not pick any Greek up in Greece but that might have been because they spoke so damn fast that I could not tell if it was a word or an entire sentence. The first foreign language I learned was Russian. Considering I was ten when Estonia became a Republic, it makes sense. We began studying Russian in first grade, though it was simplified – "koška" instead of "kot", "medvešonok" instead of "medved", "saichik" etc. Did not make much sense and we mostly played some games in Russian (Tare-tareke etc). Learned as much playing outside, since we had Estonian-Russian kids around as well. Not that we played with them. It's sad to say but it was not a nice time to be a Russian kid. We were mean to them, and we...

Essay: online news and newspapers

Essay Online news portals will make the newspapers a thing of the past Technics and scient achievements are newing all the time. For that reason people get more and more comfortable and lazier. Old traditions and values are disappearing from people´s lives. For example- films are now in 3D and 4D, people can shop online, they don´t have to go to the library to borrow books- they can just get them for free or buy from internet E-books. And what´s main- newspapers are also disappearing, people read them online. Online news portals are eating newspapers out: they are comfortable, internet is accessible and fast and ofcourse, when something important happens on another side of the world, people can read information about it after 5-10 minutes, not like with newspapers, where information is available on the next day morning. I can say that, not like others, I prefer old-fashioned newspapers, ...

My favourite room

My favourite room I love my house and especially my own room. I am very interested in Feng Shui and I try to decorate my room for this style. When you decorate room you put there a piece of your soul. With room, where I moved five years ago, I have a lot of memories. The main object of the bedroom is a bed. Remember like in evening I lied there and read books, studied, dreamed. Sometimes mom came to me. She could always listen to me and give advice. From time to time we just lied in bed, talked about life, education, love and boys. My room is bright, simple and very comfortable. It's spacious, but not huge, on the other hand it's big enough to have a bookcase, where on shelves are neatly stacked books. We have a good library, where are collected the most interesting works like fiction, mysteries, classis and adventure literature. There are a lot of my favourite books that I have reread many times. I really ado...

The Book I Advice to Read and Why

The Book I Advice to Read and Why

The Book I Advice to Read and Why. I've recently read a book which has made a very deep impression on me. It is called The Fifth Mountain and it gets really unforgettable reading. The author of the book is Paulo Coelho. He is my favourite writer, so I can recommend almost all his books I read. His plots always mislead the reader and keep him in suspense. 61 The Fifth Mountain is a work inspired by a biblical passage which seeks to reconcile all contradictions of the soul, and which intends to be an excellent advisor in times of confusion and reflection. 95 The story of the prophet Elijah is an invaluable lesson of hope for the contemporary man. To what point can we predict our own destiny? This is the question that hangs in the air over The Fifth Mountain. Paulo Coelho brings out the universal themes of how faith and love can ultimately triumph over. The author lets the reader draw his own conclusions after having experienced the hero'...

Me and languages

Me and languages. To begin with, language is a congrecation of thoughts and feelings through a system of signals, such as voice sounds, gestures, or written symbols. Communication or language is a process every child learns from birth and during our life we will usually learn many different languages. Due to the fact that both of my parents are Estonians , my mother tongue is Estonian, therefore I can speak and write in it very fluently. I also prefer read the books in Estonian. I know that some people like to do it in some other languages, in English for instance. I am really amused by the Estonian literature. I like to read books and stories from Andrus Kivirähk and F.R. Kreutzwald. English is one of the world most spoken language. You can hear it everywhere, no matter which part of the world are you in. In the third grade of elementary scool I started to learn English a...

Book opinion To Kill A Mockingbird

Book opinion I read the book “To Kill A Mockingbird” written by Harper Lee, published in 1960. The books events take place in 1880’s Alabama. I really liked the book and I understand why it’s important for people- especially young people like high-schoolers to read this book. The book gives good insight on why we still have problems with racism around us and how much worse it was back in the 19th and 20th century. It has a good mixture of educational and historical topics and humour. Although many things are told the reader through metaphors, the meaning of the metaphor is often explained, as the book is told through a kid’s point of view. I would recommend this book to high schoolers, as it explains important topics that are still an issue to this day and it may be an eye- opening book to some people.

Art-based learning

Art-based learning We can see that art-based learning is not a regular method in school. Although I barely can understand why. It seems to me, that it is rather interesting way of learning. I also would like to point out, that childrens emotional memory is strong and pleasant things will be understood and remembered more. Therefore I would like to discribe the method thoroughly. Only in the past few hundred years has reading been the primary way of teaching religion. For centuries, religious education relied on hearing and seeing. Religious education can benefit by returning to the ages-old methods of hearing and seeing to complement reading. This method enables you to make the old learning way-seeing available for the students nowadays. It is about deepening our understanding of faith. In times past, when people could not read, it was through pictures that they came to realize the glory of God's world and the meaning of the Bible(http:/...

Education

Education: Some people say that students should study only those subjects they are interested in Im going to discuss if students should study only those subjects they are interested in or not. Nowadays students are quite lazy and do not want to study or go to school. They think it is boring and parents work really hard to make them study. Also, a lot of students think that the majority of the subjects they are learning are pointless. But actually none of those are pointless and every thing has a reason. In addition to that, if students could choose the subjects themselves, then some classes would be really empty. For example, a lot of students do not like maths or reading. Math develops logic and then we could imagine how many people would be without logical thinking. And reading books enriches vocabulary, so if people do not read books at all, their vocabulary would be quite small. On the ot...

The Internet is making literature irrelevant

The Internet is making literature increasingly irrelevant in the modern world Stanislav Stõkov MASB11 When computers were not so spread as they are today, and the Internet had not appeared in the lives of people, we used to spend much more time reading. Literature and books were our best friends, and one of the most important ways on entertainment. Nowadays, if you ask a person, when he or she has read last a book and what the book's title was, the person will not know what to answer. Nobody reads any more, or if they do it is on the internet and only a summary so as not to get tired too much. The Internet entertains superficially, as people do not gain too much by ''surfing'' it. Yes, maybe a new pair of glasses for spending so much time in front of a computer. I do not say there are no educating websites that are worth visiting, that real...

Pros and cons of social networking

Pros and cons of social networking “Connectivity is a human right.“ Said Mark Zuckerberg Dear friends and Ingrid. If the people are not used to speaking in real life then it could be difficult to impress yourself with words to other people and because of this it...

The Picture of Dorian Gray / Dorian Gray portree

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) Introduction The Picture of Dorian Gray came out in 1891, in Estonian 1929. It is the only published novel written by Oscar Wilde and also considered as a classic gothic horror fiction with a little bit of philosophy in it. I decided to read this book in Estonian, because I have two books in this language available at home. The book I read was published by Eesti Päevaleht in 2007 and it consists of 184 pages. The story is centred on Dorian Gray, a young man of great beauty and on his portrait, painted by Basil Hallward. From my point of view, I think that Wilde wanted to teach us a lesson about being too conceited and having such a high opinion of oneself. It is well known that nobody gets away without punishment. The Body The book tells the story of how a friend of Dorian, the artist Basil...
