those that tried to emulate hand milking (mechanical pressure devices), and those that tried to emulate the sucking calf (vacuum devices). • Proponents of both types of milkers turned out an endless variety of contraptions for over 50 years, until the modern pulsator made the suction method the clear winner. First vacuum milker patents • Hodges and Brockenden secured an English patent for such a device in 1851. • In America, Anna Baldwin patented such a milker, using a pitcher pump and bucket in her patent illustration. • In 1859, S.W. Lowe, of Philadelphia, patented a cup fitted with a diaphragm with 4 holes for the teats. A hand cranked suction pump drew milk from all four teats at once. • Such devices created a continuous suction on the udder, damaging the mammary tissue and frequently causing the cow to kick. • In 1859, John Kingman, of Dover, NH, patented a tin teat

Leiutaja Alexander Graham Bell

Gardiner Hubbard, whose daughter, Mabel, had been deaf since the age of five. Quite unable to speak, she became the pupil of Bell, and after two years of painstakingly hard work, he taught her to talk. He had also fallen in love with her and they were married. As a child, young Alexander Graham Bell displayed a natural curiosity about his world, resulting in gathering botanical specimens as well as experimenting even at an early age. In 1877 his telephone was patented, and the Bell Telephone Company was created, which was to make him millions. In the space of 18 years, Bell had to fight off 600 separate legal actions in relation to his telephone. He was granted the freedom of the City of Edinburgh in 1920, two years before he died at home in Nova Scotia, at age 75 . When he was buried, all telephone traffic in the United States was halted for one minute as a tribute to Bell and his work.

were not so happy.) Despite his success, Watt was a rather insecure and jealous man, who did not like others having their own ideas. When one employee of the company, a man named William Murdoch, experimented with high pressure steam engines, Watt discouraged him from patenting and continuing his work, even though his engines were potentially much better and smaller than the ones Watt himself had invented. Murdoch never patented his design, and returned to fixing Watt's own engines. Later Murdoch made another important contribution to gas lighting. He retired from business in the year 1800, giving up to his two sons his interest in the extensive and prosperous business which Boulton had created at Soho. He died at Heathfield, in Staffordshire, on the 25th of August, 1819, in his eightyfourth year. In 1882, 63 years after Watt's death, the British Association gave his

Jean de Hautefeuille tried to up water, and Dutch astronomer Christiaan Huygens tried a piston in a cylinder. These experiments were the beginnings of a nuclear power-like process. In 1712, Thomas Newcom and John Calley built their first successful steam engine. Nicholas Cugnot built the first mechanically propelled road vehicle in 1769. Cugnot's vehicle was powered through a two - cylinder piston connected steam engine. It used high pressure steam as the power source. Watt patented late in 1781 a connection from the piston to a rotating gear. This set-up is still used in the internal combustion engine. Scottish engineer and inventor William Murdock created a vehicle that was powered by a miniature steam engine. In 1813, the precursors to the steam engine train was built by William Hedly. Between 1800 and 1825 steam powered travel increased. Boats, vehicles, and trains used steam engines. The method of steam production was by burning some substance.

The successful smelting of iron with coke, rather than charcoal, by English ironmaster Abraham Darby in 1709 freed iron production from fuel shortage restrictions, made large castings possible, and facilitated creation of the arch ribs for the world's first iron bridge, built seventy years later. In 1754, Henry Cort of Southampton (England) built the first rolling mill, making possible the efficient shaping of bar iron; in 1784 he patented a puddling furnace by means of which the carbon content in cast iron could be reduced to produce malleable iron. These two milestones of metallurgy realized the potential of iron as a major building material. Bridges were one of the first structural uses of iron, preceded only by columns (not yet beams) to support the floors of textile mills. This makes the vehicle more expensive. Superchargers also cost more to maintain, and most manufacturers suggest high-octane premium- grade gas. Despite their disadvantages, superchargers are still the most cost-effective way to increase horsepower. Superchargers can result in power increases of 50 to 100 percent, making them great for racing, towing heavy loads or just adding excitement to the typical driving experience. The Roots supercharger is the oldest design. Philander and Francis Roots patented the design in 1860 as a machine that would help ventilate mine shafts. In 1900, Gottleib Daimler included a Roots supercharger in a car engine. As the meshing lobes spin, air trapped in the pockets between the lobes is carried between the fill side and the discharge side. Large quantities of air move into the intake manifold and "stack up" to create positive pressure. For this reason, Roots superchargers are really nothing more than air blowers, and the term "blower" is

Both these conditions call for separate species of bacteria. It is thought that the mesophilic operations are more safe and stable than the thermophilic operations that are capable of inactivating the parasites of animals and the various pathogens. On the other hand, oil shales are source rocks that have not been exposed to heat or pressure long enough to convert their trapped hydrocarbons into crude oil. Technically speaking, oil shales are not always shales and do not contain oil, but are fined-grain sedimentary rocks containing an insoluble rganic solid called kerogen. The kerogen in the rock can be converted into crude oil using heat and pressure to simulate natural processes. The method has been known for centuries and was patented in 1694 under British Crown Patent No. 330 covering, "A way to extract and make great quantities of pitch, tar, and oil out of a sort of stone." Although oil shales are found in many countries, the United States has the world's largest deposits. Classification The petroleum industry generally classifies crude oil by the geographic location it is produced in (e.g. West Texas Intermediate, Brent, or Oman), its API gravity (an oil industry measure of density), and its sulfur content

Depending on which history you read, the Ragdoll was recognised as a purebred cat in 1965, 1966 or 1967. Also according to many sources, Denny Dayton achieved US recognition for the Ragdoll in 1967, however he didn't buy his first Ragdolls until November 1969. In 1971 Baker created the International Ragdoll Cat Association (IRCA) and claimed that non-IRCA cats to be fakes, frauds, look-alike, half-bred, not authentic etc while promoting her cats as the only legitimate Ragdolls. In 1975 Baker patented the Ragdoll name; she died in 1997 but her patent remained valid until 2005 and allowed only IRCA breeders to use the name "Ragdoll". Earlier breakaway breeders felt that the restriction did not apply to them because they had purchased and bred their cats prior to the time of the patent. In 1981, Ragdolls were exported overseas for the first time. The stories of the two types of Ragdoll ran parallel for many years. Baker's trademarked
