Book Report: The Spare Room

As they have been friends for a long time, Helen gave her consent and welcomed Nicola in her home. In Melbourne Helen also has a treatment in an institution called the Theodore. Chemo hadn't worked on her and that is why she is looking for new options to heal though the cancer is already in stage four. In that institute she gets weird kind of treatments, for example administring loads of vitamiin C which makes her sick and puts her through terrible pains. The book describes in detail how Nicola takes care of her and how stressful that is. Nicola often can't sleep and spends thousands of dollars on her treatment. As nothing seems to be helping, Helena becomes suspicisious about that institute. She calls the Health Service Commision and finds out that there have been several complains about that before. So she decides to find a new decent doctor who could really help Nicola. They meet doctor Maloney who lets them know that Nicola is about to die

Another advantage is that almost the whole world has access to those technological inventions, so if someone lives in Australia, it is surprisingly easy for them to find a friend from Europe. On the negative side, there are lots of hackers who can damage big companies or leak personal information. In addition to this, people spend too much time in front of computer screens and that causes visual illness, sickness, stress, muscular pains, etc. Furthermore, there is a lot of trash on the Internet, for example, hardware viruses that we can get through our e-mails and inappropriate material like forbidden videos that parents would not like their children to see. In conclusion, the computer is a great invention that does a huge favour for us in our everyday life, but people must know how much it is okay to use them.

Cruelly, the systems usually fade away for several hours or even a day or two, tricking the victim into thinking that they are recovering. When in due course the symptoms return with a vengeance, it may be too late: kidney and liver damage are already well underway. Without treatment, coma and eventual death are almost inevitable. In 1936, Oxford scholar J.R.R.Tolkien discovered the literaturistic side of the epic. Beowulf has influenced Tolkien and all the other writers after him. The epic has 3 parts, each focusing on Beowulf's fight with a particular monster.

The Medium Is the Message

Had his methods been employed in 1500 A.D. to discover the effects of the printed book in the lives of children or adults, he could have found out nothing of the changes in human and social, psychology resulting from typography. Print created individualism and nation alism in the sixteenth century. Program and "content" analysis offer no clues to the magic of these media or to their subliminal charge. Leonard Doob, in his report Communication in Africa, tells of one African who took great pains to listen each evening to the BBC news, even though he could understand nothing of it. Just to be in the presence of those sounds at 7 P.m. each day was important for him. His attitude to speech was like ours to melody-the resonant intonation was meaning enough. In the seventeenth century our ancestors still shared this native's attitude to the forms of media, as is plain in the following sentiment of the Frenchman Bernard Lam expressed in The Art o f Speaking (London, 1696):

In this pursuit, which is both natural and morally right, two errors are to be avoided: first, we must not treat the unknown as known and too readily accept it; and he who wishes to avoid this error (as all should do) will devote both time and attention to the weighing of evidence. The other error is that some people devote too much industry and too deep study to matters that are obscure and difficult and useless as well. If these errors are successfully avoided, all the labour and pains expended upon problems that are morally right and worth the solving will be fully rewarded. Such a worker in the field of astronomy, for example, was Gaius Sulpicius, of whom we have heard; in mathematics, Sextus Pompey, whom I have known personally; in dialectics, many; in civil law, still more. All these professions are occupied with the search after truth; but to be drawn by study away from active life is contrary to moral duty

Yes, I wanted to say. Anything. But I couldn't find my lips. "Carlisle!" the angel called, agony in his perfect voice. "Bella, Bella, no, oh please, no, no!" And the angel was sobbing tearless, broken sobs. The angel shouldn't weep, it was wrong. I tried to find him, to tell him everything was fine, but the water was so deep, it was pressing on me, and I couldn't breathe. There was a point of pressure against my head. It hurt. Then, as that pain broke through the darkness to me, other pains came, stronger pains. I cried out, gasping, breaking through the dark pool. "Bella!" the angel cried. "She's lost some blood, but the head wound isn't deep," a calm voice informed me. "Watch out for her leg, it's broken." A howl of rage strangled on the angel's lips. I felt a sharp stab in my side. This couldn't be heaven, could it? There was too much pain for that. "Some ribs, too, I think," the methodical voice continued. But the sharp pains were fading

But most of the films of the time were failures. Soviet Estonia was exhibited like a fashion show… sharp social problems were touched, but the authors confined themselves to just registering them.1 The same difficulties were likewise present in symphonic music, as Ofelia Tuisk observed:
