The Troubled Peace 1 a) The Nazis didn't care for any other nationalities, they used people who weren't German only for ''slave work'' . Germanys only concern was to keep themselves happy and powerful. They wanted to make themselves the superior race. Hitlers idea of the perfect race, the Aryan race also didn't help, because the Aryan race should have people with light eyes, hair and skin, they should be tall and powerful. For the next nine months, Eva and her sister Miriam were housed in a rat-infested bunk with 300 other children and subjected to medical experiments daily. Despite the daily torture, Eva was determined to survive. When liberation finally came on January 27, 1945, Eva and Miriam were at the front of the line as the children were led out of Auschwitz. Renee Firestone survived by using her skills as an aspiring designer to throw off the Nazis. After Auschwitz she met her brother and moved to Prague. She was a famous fashion designer and later on she and her brother moved to U.S. Martin Greenfield survived the bitter cold of the death march by wearing layers of discarded Gestapo uniform shirts he obtained while working as a tailor in Auschwitz. part of the Hanseatic League, a trading organization of a hundred northern cities. The Danes sold Tallinn to the Livonan Order, a branch of the Teutonic Knights, in 1346. The Swedes came next in 1561. Tallinn weathered plague and the Great Northern War and became part of Russia in 1710. In 1918, Estonia declared independence from Russia and fought a bitter war against Bolshevik Russia. Independence didn’t last long, however, and the fledgling nation fell first to the Nazis and then the Soviets during World War II. Despite all this conquering, Tallinn’s historic core has survived remarkably intact. Much of the 14th century city wall still stands, including a couple of stretches where you can climb the narrow spiral staircases of the towers and end up on the medieval catwalk. The Viru Gates, flanked by thin pointed towers from the 14th century, makes a nice entrance into Old Town. Dominating the town atop Toompea Hill is Toompea Castle and Pikk Hermann Tower

exterminate Jews simply because `'the diesel engines don't emit enough carbon monoxide to kill anybody''. The six million people murdered: the first influential Holocaust revisionist, Paul Rassinier, said the number of Jewish victims was exaggerated and his own estimate was that only about 1,5 million Jews died. Cause of deaths: deniers say the deaths in concentration camps resulted in disease or starvation; that they weren't killed by the Nazis. And if they were, it was because of wartime privations. 300 000 to one or two million Jews were killed in ghettos and camps. The master plan: the deniers say the Nazi's didn't have an intention to exterminate European Jewry, but to deport the Jews out of the Reich (regime or empire). They say that the Holocaust was the invention of the Jews and that the concentration camps were `'inventions of the Jewish mind''. WHY DENY IT?

Following elections in July, Estonia was incorporated into the USSR as a constituent republic. Over 60,000 persons were killed or deported during the occupation's first year. Estonian irregulars fought Soviet troops in June 1941 as part of the German invasion, and their support of the Nazis continued through 1944. Occupied by German troops during much of World War II, Estonia was retaken by Soviet forces in 1944, who killed or deported thousands of Estonians. Collectivization of agriculture and nationalization of industry began in the late 1940s. In 1991, during the attempted hard-line coup against Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, Estonia declared its independence from the USSR. In June 1992, Estonia

The House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, later Windsor (1901-...): The first king of this period was Edward VII, the eldest son of Victoria and Albert. He enjoyed active social life and had several mistresses (hence the name `the Playboy King'). George V was confronted with many crises, including World War I, Ireland's fight for independence, women's battle to secure the vote, the General Strike, the Great Depression and the rise of Hitler's Nazis. The family name was changed into `Windsor' in 1917. World War I (1914-1918) was a war in Europe fought between France, the UK and the British Empire, Russia and the US (`the Allies') on one side and Germany, Austria-Hungary and Turkey on the other side. As for voting, the Reform Act of 1832 gave the vote to all men who owned a house. Later, in 1928, all men and women over 21 had the right to vote. When Russia became engulfed by the March Revolution of 1917, Finland seized the opportunity to declare independence on Dec. 6, 1917. The USSR attacked Finland on Nov. 30, 1939, after Finland refused to give in to Soviet territorial demands. The Finns staged a strong defense for three months before being forced to cede the Soviets 16,000 sq mi (41,440 sq km). Under German pressure, the Finns joined the Nazis against Russia in 1941, but they were defeated again and forced to cede the Petsamo area to the USSR. In 1948, a treaty of friendship and mutual assistance was signed by the two nations. Finland continued to pursue a foreign policy of nonalignment throughout the cold-war era. Running on a platform to revitalize the economy, Ahtisaari, a Social Democrat, won the country's first direct presidential election in a runoff in Feb. 1994. Previously, presidents had been chosen by electors

Since the 1930s this has raised the possibility of Kipling being mistaken for a Nazi-sympathiser, though the Nazi party did not adopt the swastika until 1920. Kipling's use of the swastika was based on the Indian sun symbol conferring good luck and well-being; the word derived from the Sanskrit word svastika meaning "auspicious object". He used the swastika symbol in both right- and left-facing orientations, and it was in general use at the time. Even before the Nazis came to power, Kipling ordered the engraver to remove it from the printing block so that he should not be thought of as supporting them. Less than one year before his death Kipling gave a speech to The Royal Society of St George on 6 May 1935 warning of the danger Nazi Germany posed to the UK. The Jungle Book is a collection of stories by British Nobel laureate Rudyard Kipling. The original publications contain illustrations, some by Rudyard's father, John Lockwood Kipling

But Marshall knew that scramblers afforded protection merely against casual listeners; they could be penetrated by a determined eavesdropper with proper equipment. He had on several occasions warned the President about security on his transatlantic telephone conversations with Ambassador Bullitt in France and later with Churchill—a wise move, for, though he did not know it, the Nazis had already penetrated that scrambler. The Japanese had evidenced some interest in the San Francisco-Honolulu scrambler, and Marshall was acutely sensitive "that the Japanese would have grasped at most any straw" to suggest to the isola- tionists that the administration had committed an overt act that had forced the Japanese hand. Japanese interception of a scrambler warning might thus have sent the country to war divided. So Marshall shunned

music. As Pärt told me he started to compose Nekrolog in the summer of 1960 and so this work was quite an independent undertaking. For preparation he had got two books through his Professor Heino Eller: Ernst Křenek’s Zwölfton-Kontrapunkt Studien (Mainz, Schott 1952), and Herbert Eimert’s Lehrbuch der Zwölftontechnik (Wiesbaden, Breitkopf und Härtel, 1958). At the beginning of the Sixties much was spoken and written about the crimes German Nazis had committed in Estonia. The occurrences of brutality set the composer pondering over violence and he lost faith in contemporary society. His Nekrolog was the conclusion on his relationship with that world. As the composer marked: “Nekrolog is an evaluation of the realities of our time as they are thought, it has nothing to do with pessimism.” 1 It is quite interesting to mention that the first performance did not take place in
