respect the rules. The victors enjoyed great honours and on returning to their cities their compatriots pulled down part of the walls for them to enter. They were also given special privileges and high office. Baron Pierre de Coubertin (January 1, 1863-September 2, 1937), born as Pierre de Frédy, was a French pedagogue and historian, but is best known as the founder of the modern Olympic Games. He was born in Paris into a French aristocratic family. As a young man he was an avid sportsman with rowing being one of his favourites, also practicing the sports of boxing, fencing and horse-riding. Influenced by the social, political and scientific events of the late 19th century and his substantial education, Coubertin developed a passionate belief that sport possessed a power to benefit humankind and encourage peace among the nations of the world. He refused the military career planned for him by his family, as well as renouncing a promising political career.

golds (100m ,200 m, long jump and 4x100 m relay). Equalizing Jesse Owens he becomes the "son of the wind" and "King Carl", two nicks which will take him up to the end of career. During the outdoor season he was unbeaten, except for a race of 300 m. In 1985 and 1986 Carl's races are rather poor except a 9"98 and a 8,62 in 1985. Then he had even a row with U.S. federation and didn't take part to U.S. championships. He works, together with Jeffrey Marx, on his biography ("Inside the track") and tries to sing. In 1986 he knows a new opponent: Ben Johnson, who humiliated him at Goodwill games running 9"95 against 10"06. In 1987 his father died of cancer. At Rome, in the second edition of the world championships he achieved two golds (long jump and 4x100 relay) and a silver in 100 m behind Ben Johnson. The Canadian sprinter was his opposite: ugly, short, poor, awful in the running style. But he was powerful: at start he always

There is no exact answer to that problem. It all depends on the point of view. You can go into ancient times looking for the beginnings of sports like wrestling. One possible beginning of Estonian sports could be games called "killamängud". The first Estonian mentioned in the Guinness Book of Records was a sportsman. In the Olympic Games of 1912 in Stockholm, the Finn Alfred Asikainen and the Estonian Martin Klein wrestled for a record 11 hours and 40 minutes. Klein won, and "Russia" was given as his country of residence. The first chance to rectify this mistake came in 1918 when the Republic of Estonia came into being for the first time. Martin Klein was the first Estonian Olympic medal winner. Among other Estonians, the heavyweight wrestlers Georg Lurich, Aleksander Aberg and Georg
