Iirimaa kõige asustatum koht jääb ida poole Iiri mere äärde, pealinna Dublini piirkonda, kuid väga asustatud ala jääb ka pealinna ümbruskonda, mis pole nii asustatud kui Dublin, kuid sellegipoolest asustatud rohkesti. Suurimad rahvastiku alad jäävad linnade piirkonda. Vähem asustatud alad jäävad rohkem saare lääne poole, kus asub ka Iirimaa kõige vähem asustatud ala(Valge)- Mayo krahvkond ja Galway krahvkond. Iive 1845-47. aastate suurest näljahädast 1960. aastate keskpaigani rahvaarv vähenes, eeskätt tööpuudusest tingitud väljarände tagajärjel. Pärast seda on loomulik iive suurenenud ja väljaränd vähenenud, seetõttu on rahvaarv hakanud kasvama. to the uprising Irish. The Cromwellian conquest of Ireland (164953) ~The Land to be paid~ A problem of equal concern to Cromwell after the Civil War, however, was the fact that most of the soldiers in the Roundhead army still needed paid for their time served in the Civil War, but Parliament had no money to give them. So Cromwell decided to pay them in land. He forcibly moved thousands of Irish from their homes in Munster and Leinster and resettled them in counties Clare, Galway, Mayo and Roscommon. This was by far the poorest land in Ireland and, as well as this, they were not allowed to live within 3 miles of the coast. This strip, called the 'Mile Line' was given to Cromwell's soldiers. In 1652 the newly cleared land in Munster and Leinster was given to Protestants in what was called the 'Cromwellian Settlement'. There was now no part of Ireland where Catholics owned more than ½ of the land

Christopher Columbus

This is the name we know him by today but his actual name is Cristobal Colon in Spanish, or Cristofero Colombo in Italian. He first went to sea at the age of 1465 at the age of 14. He was a deck boy and he had to clean, cook and mend clothes. By the age of 30 he was an experienced sailor and a skilful navigator. He had made many journeys to the South Atlantic from his home the Madeira Islands. He also sailed to Bristol and Galway. Many people believed that he had also sailed to the north of Iceland in 1477. During those visits Columbus heard stories about life to the west of Europe. His ambition to find the shortest and safest sea route to the riches of the Far East started to grow. Gradually he worked out his plan to reach the East by sailing west. In 1482 Columbus tried to interest the Portugese king, Joao III, in his journey. The

Fishing, or angling, is also a common recreational activity, featuring mainly trout and salmon fishing. Rugby internationals played at Dublin's Lansdowne Road stadium are considered high points of the sporting year. Enthusiasts of horse racing flock to the Galway Races in the summer and early fall. Holidays and Celebrations The Irish celebrate New Year's Day on 1 January. Saint Patrick's Day on 17 March is a national holiday and is marked by parades, shamrock decorations, and sometimes the wearing of clothing that is green (the national color). This action, known as the Partition of Ireland, followed four attempts to introduce devolved autonomous government over the whole island of Ireland (in 1886, 1893, 1914 and 1920). The Irish Free State was abolished when Ireland was formally established on 29 December 1937, the day the Constitution of Ireland came into force. Irish independence in 1922 was preceded by the Easter Rising of 1916, when Irish volunteers and the Irish Citizen Army took over sites in Dublin and Galway under terms expressed in the Proclamation of the Irish Republic. The seven signatories of this proclamation, Patrick Pearse, Thomas MacDonagh, Thomas Clarke, Sean MacDiarmada, Joseph Plunkett, Eamonn Ceannt and James Connolly, were executed, along with nine others, and thousands were interned precipitating the Irish War of Independence. established in England, with Chaucer even referencing it in his Canterbury Tales. It was by no means solely confined to the lower orders either, as the Great Wardrobe of Henry VIII in 1526 recorded `one leather pair (of shoes) for football', and decrees around 1555 were required to ban football at the colleges of Cambridge and Oxford University. Football was also prevalent beyond English borders, with the game first mentioned in Ireland in the 1527 Statute of Galway and a ball found in Scotland which dates back to 1540 and was supposedly used for football. Across the continent too, other forms of the game were visible like the 16th century Calcio Fiorentino in Florence and La Soule in Normandy. The establishment of football as a proper sport The first signs of football developing from its mob roots came with the publication of the naturalist Francis Willoughby's `Book of Sports' around 1660.
