Trench - Kraav PANCAKE RACING Olney's famous race is run every Shrove Tuesday, featuring women who have lived in the town for more than 6 months. It dates back to 1445 and it is believed all began with a townswoman late for the Shriving service at the Olney parish church. She heard the church bells ring out for the service and she fled her house fearful of being late. She ran the distance down the High Street to make it to the parish church - still clutching her frying pan and wearing an apron. The Olney residents (women) compete in traditional apron, cap, and holding a fying pan with a real pancake. They must toss their pancake once at the start and once at the finish. For the fastest Olney runner, there's a prize - but there are prizes too for the oldest participant and the one who raises the most for charity. STRAW BEAR DAY

Literary analyses of Beowulf

For example "No keenest blade, no farest of falchions", "That here was the last of life, an end of his days on earth", "Swallowed him piecemeal: swiftly thus the lifeless corse was clean devoured" have more or less the same meaning in both parts of the phrase. Another interesting characteristic of Anglo-Saxon literature is the rarity of similes. There are altogether only five similes in the entire epic and one of them - "Streamed from his eyes fearful flashes, like flame to see" can be found in the extract. The text has some features of Christianity in it e.g. "From captive of hell" and "His heathen soul, -and hell received it". As the scribes were clergymen/ clergywomen they couldn't possibly write down anything pagan and therefore had to add some features of Christianity to it.

Anglo- Saxon kingdoms liked nationalism. Numerous attempts were made throughout this period to create, if not a nation of Wales, then at least larger and more powerful kingdoms within Wales. One of the early leaders of these tentative movements toward nationalism was Rhodri ap Merfyn, later to be known as Rhodri Mawr (Rhodri the Great). In 877 the two "Greats", Rhodri and Alfred clashed, and the Welsh leader and his son were killed. England kings fearful of the power of Rhodri's sons, submitted to the overlordship of Wessex, who were English leaders. Eventually even two other son's of Rhodri the Great were forced to acknowledge Alfred Wessex as their overlord. This step was to have far-reaching consequences for English leaders since they could claim overlordship of pretty much all over the Wales. In 1066 when Normans invaded England Welsh rose in revolt. By the 1100 Normans were

can establish that everything has to come from something. And that something is controlling everything & owning everything. ONE'S QUOTA IN NATURE (P 5) Cow gives milk bu eats grass and straw. Lion will not eat grass, cow will not eat flesh. Within nature all beings follow the pattern which are set by nature. Cow is not a dead machine or petrol tank. Cow is living, loving being and a person. When cow is loved and cared milk increases. This is an arrangement of nature. When we keep cows in fearful, unhealthy conditions, then they will not produce so much milk. We should be satisfied with those things that are kindly set for us. QUOTE IN HUMAN POSSESSION OF THE EARTH (p 6-8) All materials for house come from nature from Lord. Ie carpenter makes nice furniture from the material we provide. To whom does this belong? If we don't acknowledge the authority of God, we are encroaching God's property and therefore we shall be punished.

His mother thinks he is becoming too dangerously preoccupied with a married woman. Further, Vronsky is becoming frustrated at having to hide his life with Anna. With all that on his mind, Vronsky falls off his horse during the race and the horse, Frou Frou, dies: "She flew over the ditch as though not noticing it. She flew over it like a bird; but at the same instant Vronsky, to his horror, felt that he had failed to keep up with the mare's pace, that he had, he did not know how, made a fearful, unpardonable mistake, in recovering his seat in the saddle. All at once his position had shifted and he knew something awful had happened." Right before the race Vronsky goes to see Anna and learns of the pregnancy. Anna is astounded at Vronsky's reaction--he tells her she should come live with him and leave her husband and son once and for all. He proves that he knows her well when he tells her she is suffering from the guilt of society and

The religious authorities at Rome were uneasy with the New Science. Copernicus, Kepler and Galileo seemed to be turning the world upside down. The sun was the center of the cosmos, the earth moved and the sky seemed to hold hidden visions. In effect, the Scientific Revolution had created an invisible world behind the visible world and those men of an older generation, weaned on Aristotle and Aquinas were fearful of it. On April 12, 1615, Cardinal Bellarmine (15421621) wrote his famous LETTER TO FOSCARINI , a letter which expressed his displeasure with Copernican theory. The following year, Galileo was summoned [ kutsuti välja ] to Rome and ordered to desist teaching Copernican theory. He was, however, free to think about Copernican theory, but he could not teach it or write about it. Galileo agreed to this condition but still maintained that his

CHANGE YOUR THINKING CHANGE YOUR LIFE

—William James Once upon a time there was a woman, about 30 years old, married with two children. Like many people, she had grown up in a home where she was constantly criticized and often treated unfairly by her parents. As a result, she developed deep feelings of inferiority and low self-esteem. She was negative and fearful, and had no confi- dence at all. She was shy and self-effacing, and did not consider herself to be particularly valuable or worthwhile. She felt that she was not really talented at anything. One day, as she was driving to the store, another car went through a red light and smashed into her. When she awoke, she was in the hospital with a mild concussion and complete memory loss.

receive them with pleasure before. Her answer, therefore, was not propitious, at least not to Elizabeth's wishes, for she was impatient to get home. Mrs. Bennet sent them word that they could not possibly have the carriage before Tuesday; and in her postscript it was added, that if Mr. Bingley and his sister pressed them to stay longer, she could spare them very well. Against staying longer, however, Elizabeth was positively resolved--nor did she much expect it would be asked; and fearful, on the contrary, as being considered as intruding themselves needlessly long, she urged Jane to borrow Mr. Bingley's carriage immediately, and at length it was settled that their original design of leaving Netherfield that morning should be mentioned, and the request made. The communication excited many professions of concern; and enough was said of wishing them to stay at least till the following day to work on Jane; and till the morrow their going was deferred

APPROACH TO THE I N M O S T CAVE T h e hero comes at last to the edge of a dangerous place, sometimes deep underground, where the object of the quest is hidden. Often it's the headquarters of the hero's greatest enemy, the most dangerous spot in the Special World, the Inmost Cave. W h e n the hero enters that fearful place he will cross the second major threshold. Heroes often pause at the gate to prepare, plan, and outwit the villain's guards. T h i s is the phase of Approach. In mythology the Inmost Cave may represent the land of the dead. T h e hero may have to descend into hell to rescue a loved one (Orpheus), into a cave to fight a dragon and win a treasure (Sigurd in Norse m y t h ) , or into a labyrinth to confront a monster (Theseus and the M i n o t a u r ) .

For example, it is likely you won't feel any emotion when you are told that someone's car has been stolen, but when it is your car, you will probably feel upset. It is amazing how much emotion a little mental concept like “my” can generate. Al though the body is very intelligent, it cannot tell the difference between an actual situation and a thought. It reacts to every thought as if it were a reality. It doesn't know it is just a thought. To the body, a worrisome, fearful thought means “I am in danger,” and it responds accordingly, even though you may be lying in a warm and comfortable bed at night. Th heart beats faster, muscles contract, breathing becomes rapid. There is a buildup of energy, but since the danger is only a mental fiction, the energy has no outlet. Part of it is fed back to the mind and generates even more anxious thought. The rest of the energy turns toxic and interferes with the harmonious functioning of the body. EMOTIONS AND THE EGO

Finally the screen was finished -- simple white background with black text, academic-looking. Two quotes greeted me on the home page: Throughout the vast shadowy world of ghosts and demons there is no figure so terrible, no figure so dreaded and abhorred, yet dight with such fearful fascination, as the vampire, who is himself neither ghost nor demon, but yet who partakes the dark natures and possesses the mysterious and terrible qualities of both. -- Rev. Montague Summers If there is in this world a well-attested account, it is that of the vampires. Nothing is lacking: official reports, affidavits of well-known people, of surgeons, of priests, of magistrates; the judicial proof is most complete. The exact reason why is not known and later became the subject of wild claims. Since kittens inherit much of their personality from their sire, the most likely explanation is that she was breeding with different males, ones carrying genes for more sociable offspring. Judging by the kittens' appearance, Josephine's suitors were most likely Birman and Burmese. In addition, Josephine was less wild and perhaps did not train her kittens to be quite so fearful of humans. Baker decided to create a new breed, one which retained the very sociable, relaxed traits, non-matting fur, large size and the property of going limp when handled. She acquired a black Burmese-looking female called Buckwheat and a bicolour female called Fugianna. Fugianna's sire was another of Josephine's kittens, a seal-point Birman-type cat called Daddy Warbucks. There were to be no more founding cats since Josephine and her next litter were destroyed by their owner

behavior. Bandura and his colleagues have shown how people suffering from pho- bias can be rid of these extreme fears in an amazingly simple fashion. For instance, in an early study (Bandura, Grusec, 8{ Menlove, 1967), nursery-school-age children, chosen because they were terrified of dogs, merely watched a little boy playing happily with a dog for 20 minutes a day. This exhibition produced such marked changes in the reactions of the fearful children that, after only four days, 67 percent of them were willing to climb into a playpen with a dog and remain confined there petting and scratching the dog while everyone else left the room. Moreover, when the researchers tested the children's fear levels again, one month later, they found that the improvement had not diminished during that time; in fact, the children were more willing than ever to interact with dogs.
