India was considered the jewel in the crown of the British Empire between 1858 and 1947. Queen Victoria had been made Empress of India and the British had a major military presence there. The British who lived in India were the elites of the country. Under the British Empire the nation flourished as a center of textiles, which soon became India's number one export. Mexico crises (economic, 1985 earthquake) brought gradual change. Ironically, pro-democratic electoral reform was greatest when ruling party (PRI) was strongest. PRI needed a credible opposition. Both bottom up and top down (though former was stronger). Pres Zedillo (1994-2000) accelerated reforms. THE HISTORY OF JOURNALISM

THE HISTORY OF JOURNALISM

The first dedicated school for journalism, Missouri School of Journalism, was founded in 1908 in the United States of America by Walter Williams. In the 1920s, as modern journalism was just taking form, writer Walter Lippmann and American philosopher John Dewey debated over the role of journalism in a democracy. Their differing philosophies still characterize a debate about the role of journalism in society and the nation- state. The journalist became the middleman. When elites spoke, journalists listened and recorded the information, distilled it, and passed it on to the public for their consumption. The public is not smart enough to understand complicated, political issues. Furthermore, the public was too consumed with their daily lives to care about complex public policy. Therefore the public needed someone to interpret the decisions or concerns of the elite to make the information plain and simple.

Strategies of creating a dominant party – the case of UR

Your proposals and the proposals of the government form their basis . . . The realization of the national projects is strictly the work of the party. During the decade, a lot of attention has also been focused on moves made by the Putin administration to expand the control over the national media. It is clear that the first aspiration of most of the media in Russia is not to deliver unbiased or balanced news. Instead, the media serves the existing elites in power. For this reason, the media uses every opportunity to demonstrate current leaders in their best light, while marginalizing those trying to challenge that power. State control over the media has increased rapidly after Putin took office. The most significant changes concern the television. Two of the three major federal television channels - Channel One and Russia TV- are state owned and in 2001, Gazprom-Media, a media branch of the

BRITISH NATIONAL SYMBOLS

BRITISH NATIONAL SYMBOLS

England and Scotland were still in use on land and were legally formalised in 1707.(reigning 1572-84). The end of the 18'h century marks the official beginning of the `national' flag. This was a gradual process where official recognition came after the flag and its colours had gained some sort of symbolic value. It is of course impossible in all cases to establish whether flags had symbolic value for the elites only or whether the people associated themselves with the first flags that were adopted. As we have seen many countries had more than one flag denoting `belonging' before modern times. Varieties of flags referred to vague notions of `nationality' and were in their various designs used at sea by warships, unarmed vessels and privately owned craft be recognised in a context where flags emerged as political symbols in modern times. And flag law was adopted in 1906. England: St

sufficiently that João VI would have been able to return safely to Lisbon. However, the King of Portugal remained in Brazil until the Liberal Revolution of 1820, which started in Porto, demanded his return to Lisbon in 1821. Thus he returned to Portugal but left his son Pedro in charge of Brazil. When the king attempted the following year to return the Kingdom of Brazil to subordinate status as a principality, his son Pedro, with the overwhelming support of the Brazilian elites, declared Brazil's independence from Portugal. Cisplatina (today's sovereign state of Uruguay), in the south, was one of the last additions to the territory of Brazil under Portuguese rule. COLONIAL RESTORATION At the height of European colonialism in the 19th century, Portugal had already lost its territory in South America and all but a few bases in Asia. Luanda, Benguela, Bissau, Lourenço Marques, Porto Amboim and the Island of Mozambique were among the oldest

Severe accusations of crime, genocide, conspiracy, treason, etc. are being hurled at one another. The various domestic and external conspiracy theories, particularly those originating in the former KGB circles, can be viewed as a fruit of extreme subjectivism and fantasy. The Russian memoir literature does not feature any consensus on the extinction of the empire. 154 All the advocates of the preservation of the Soviet Union, including Gorbachev, blame the collapse on the local elites, separatists, nationalists, and party nomenklatura, citing the desire to get a bite of the public property rather than the nation’s desire for freedom as the leading motive. Those who idealise the empire mostly discard any actual analysis of the national issue, instead eulogising the unprecedented burgeoning of nations under the Soviet regime and socialism as such. These memoirs demonstrate that the liberation movements of the Baltic peoples

Jammeh of the Gambia is the latest in a line of idiots who seize the ballot box in a corrupt election to declare themselves democratically elected. Today, there are about 2.5 million Africans in the Untied States of America. The majority are the elites who fled and the new elites who are planning to return to an extravagant life of abundance. Hence, the African immigrant group has been declared by the U.S. Census Bureau as the most educated immigrant group in America. But beyond the fact that he is highly educated, the African immigrant, unlike his Indian, Chinese and other immigrant counterparts, has not had any visible impact on America. Most are still caught up in their loss of opulent lifestyles in Africa, and have not been able to assimilate into a

I glared at him, even though I was mad at myself for caring either way. "What does that mean? When you're on the prowl?" Gideon's mouth curved into a genuine smile that hit me hard. "When expensive decisions need to be made. I own this club, Eva." Of course he did. Jeez. A pretty waitress set two pinkish-colored iced drinks in square tumblers on the table. She looked at Gideon and gave him a flirtatious smile. "Here you go, Mr. Cross. Two Stoli Elites and cranberry. Can I get you anything else?" "That'll be all for now. Thanks." I could totally see that she wanted to get on the preapproved list and I bristled at that; then I was distracted by what we'd been served. It was my beverage of choice when clubbing and what I'd been drinking all night. My nerves tingled. I watched him take a drink, swirl it around in his mouth like a fine wine, and then swallow it. The working of his throat made me hot, but that was nothing
