Meetod on efektiivne siis, kui tema efektiivsus on tõestatud konkreetse psüühika- ja käitumishäire ravis. On antud välja raamat: Ärevushäirete ja foobiate käsiraamat, Edmund J. Bourne Ameerika Psühholoogide Assotsiatsioon moodustas 1993. aastal töögrupi (The Task Force on Promotion and Dissemination of Psychological Procedures, edaspidi töögrupp), mille ülesandeks sai teaduslikult tõestatud efektiivsusega teraapiameetodite defineerimine ning selle teadmise levitamine. Töögruppi kuulusid erinevate psühhoteraapiakoolkondade esindajad. Juba 1995. aastal avaldas töögrupp esmakordselt ka kriteeriumid, millele peavad vastama uuringud teraapiameetodi efektiivsuse hindamisel.
