The projection model was developed in collaboration with researchers in the Age and Cohort Change Project at IIASA, who are world leaders in population projections methodology. The model uses an advanced version of the cohort-component method typically employed by demographers to forecast population growth. It starts with a population of baseline age groups, or cohorts, divided by sex and religion. Each cohort is projected into the future by adding likely gains (immigrants and people switching in)

Studies in humans The finding of nasal tumors in rodents exposed to high levels of airborne formaldehyde in the early 1980s led to a concern for cancer effects in occupationally exposed workers. The participants didn’t experience any changes in HDL-cholesterol levels, but their total blood cholesterol had gone up by 19% at the end of the fourth week. 30 Another cohort study, on elderly people, suggested that high levels of LDL cholesterol are not necessarily linked to cardiovascular diseases, and that total cholesterol lowers as people got older, so it didn’t affect their cardiovascular health. 31 Still, these findings have little back-up and LDL-cholesterol levels need further investigation, before we can rule out the possibility of it being one of the risk factors for coronary artery disease. 29 D
