About Peter I House Museum

About Peter I House Museum Emperor Peter I (1672-1725) expanded the borders of the Russian Empire in the course of the Northern War and managed to annex the whole Estonian territory by the year 1710. Therefore the protection of the new border areas became the priority of the ruler and he paid a lot of attention to the reconstruction of ports in Tallinn and Paldiski and visited Tallinn several times. Together with the site of the would-be palace, a summer estate and a 17th-century cottage that had belonged to town councillor von Drenteln were purchased for the emperor's use in 1713. The small cottage was enlarged with a wing and the outcome was a building with a hall, a kitchen and four rooms. The small summer residence was

of Great Britain to prevent military raids by the tribes of Scotland to the north, to improve economic stability and provide peaceful conditions in the Roman province of Britannia to the south, to physically mark the frontier of the Empire, and to separate the unruly Selgovae tribe in the north from the Brigantes in the south and discourage them from uniting. The name is also sometimes used jocularly as a synonym for the border between Scotland and England, although for most of its length the wall follows a line well south of the modern border -- and neither the Scoti tribe nor the English lived in Britain at the time of the wall's construction. The wall was the northern border of the Empire in Britain for much of the Roman Empire's rule, and also the most heavily fortified border in the Empire. In addition to its use as a

FROM YouTube: A History Of Scotland - Episode 1 - The Last Of The Free (1/6) 1. Why is the early Scottish history often mythologised? Early Scottish history is often mythologised because its earliest records are almost always written by others (for example Tacitus). 2. Directly and indirectly, what did the Hadrian Wall represent? It represented directly the border of the Roman colonies in Britain and indirectly the ‘’end of the world’’, where true (Roman) civilization ended and savagery began. A History Of Scotland - Episode 1 - The Last Of The Free (2/6) 1. Why shouldn`t we call the Pictish society barbarian? They were affluent, had a good diet, were very organized, probably communicated with people far away 2. What were the differences between the Gaels and the Picts? They converted to Christianity

In 1648, the Battle of St Fagans took place close by. Chepstow Castle Chepstow Castle, located in Chepstow, Monmouthshire in Wales, on top of cliffs overlooking the River Wye, is the oldest surviving post-Roman stone fortification in Britain. Its construction was begun under the instruction of the Norman Lord William fitzOsbern, soon made Earl of Hereford, from 1067, and it was the southernmost of a chain of castles built along the English-Welsh border in the Welsh Marches. The castle ruins are Grade I listed as at 6 December 1950 Chester castle In the City of Chester near the Racecourse and River, on the border with Wales. The remains of Chester castle stand on a low hill within a bend of the River Dee, just a stones-throw from the border with Wales. Although this once-mighty fortress has been obscured by newer buildings there is still enough of the ancient fabric left to entertain the interested visitor.

Description The eastern border of Livonia was mainly formed already in the first half of the 13th century and the first belt of fortresses here was probably ready by the end of the 13th century. The first fortresses were not built on the border but further inland. The first decades of the 14th century brought no changes in the situation. Early in 1340 the relationship with Russians deteriorated again. Provincial master Burchard von Dreileben planned a campaign against Pskov and demanded the help of Tartu bishopric. The provincial master began to build another belt of border fortresses. On the Annunciation Day, March 25, 1342, the building of fortresses in Marienburg and Vastseliina began

My home town of Valga Guide to Valga town ancient and modern Valga is the southern-most town in Estonia and despite its small size, the town straddles two countries. So it has two languages, two currencies and two cultures. Valga also has a rich history and a versatile cultural scene. Valga town is a pearl waiting to be discovered. In the south, Estonia shares a border with Latvia and here Valga town is split in half, the northern side, "Valga", belongs to Estonia and "Valka", on the southern side, belongs to Latvia. For years, this created a complicated situation where members of one family, even living on the same street, may have had different citizenships and had to go through customs and border guards in order to visit each other. Fortunately, after both countries joined the Schengen zone, border points were removed and Valga-Valka is fast

Since 1944,the western part of Setomaa belongs to the Republic of Estonia and the eastern part to the Russian Federation. This kind of division is the source of the Setos' burning problems: the split-up congregations, location of properties and relatives on the other side of the state border. The Setos have preserved their original dialect, skills of cooking their traditional food, their beautiful and peculiar folk costumes. The most attractive decoration to go with the folk costume is the set of silver jewellery: numerous necklaces and a conic brooch worn by married women. The handicraft of Seto women is fine and colourful. Seto people are known for their original runic verse folk song - leelo. A Leelo choir consists of a chanter and the choir. The chanter is a good improviser.

The border with Canada is often called ,,the longest unguarded border in the world". The United States and Canada are good friends and they have very few problems in managing the border. The borded with Mexico is different. Immigrants are constantly crossing the border illegally. Every day about 2,000 of them are captured and sent back, but may others get through. There are also two states that are not connected to the continental United States. They are Alaska and Hawaii.

In 1944 Russian air raids destroyed Narva, and one-third of the residential area in Tallinn was destroyed. By late September 1944, Soviet forces expelled the last German troops from Estonia, ushering in a second phase of Soviet rule. That year, Moscow also transferred the Estonian Narva and Petseri border districts, which held a large percentage of ethnic Russians, to Russian control. In 1944, there were massive arrests of people who had actively supported the German occupation or been disloyal to Soviet order. In May 8, 1990, the Supreme Council of the Republic of Estonia (created the previous day) restored the Republic of Estonia. Summary Britta Kase

For me the most important thing is air, water and food quality. The EU has introduced compulsory quality standards for the air we breathe, there are quality standards for drinking water as well and EU has forced all food manufacturers to label their products. All member states must follow rules made by EU because the threat to our environment can only be tackled collectively. EU has made our lives easier. Travelling in Europe is very easy because there are no longer any border controls between most European countries. The Schengen Agreement has made border controls between its member countries unnecessary. That’s how freedom of movement has created. Anyone can decide where they prefer to live, study or work. And if we fall ill or have an accident in other European country, we can be sure that we can get medical treatment with no fuss and at the same cost as people living in that country. These are very relevant points for all Europeans.

Illegal Immigration in America - essee

Often the United States is referred to as the land of opportunity. No wonder a lot of people want to experience it – in fact a survey found out that about 165 million adults worldwide would immigrate to the United States if they had the opportunity. Unfortunately not everyone who decides to live in America does it legally and that’s where the problems begin. Illegal immigration is not a new issue in the United States. For many years immigrants have crossed the American border through Mexico, the Pacific Ocean or some other way. Also there are people who enter the country with a visa but stay for a longer time than it allows them to. Every day thousands of immigrants come to the United States and in March 2010 the estimated number of illegal aliens in the States was about 11 200 000. About eight million of them had jobs. But why are there so many illegal immigrants in the US? Is it truly that difficult to get a green card in the United States

The sitter's hair is confined tightly to her head under a very fine net veil with a woven border of gold-wound threads. As in many of Leonardo's portraits, the composition comprises a pyramidic spiral and the sitter is caught in the motion of turning to her left, reflecting Leonardo's life-long preoccupation with the dynamics of movement. This work in particular shows da Vinci's expertise in painting the human form. The outstretched hand of Cecilia was painted with great detail. Da Vinci paints every contour of each fingernail, each wrinkle around her knuckles, and
