Channel Tunnel
Date started: December 1, 1987
Date finished: May 6, 1994
Location: Strait of Dover, between the United Kingdom and France
The Channel Tunnel is a 50.5-kilometre undersea rail tunnel .At its lowest
point, it is 75 metres deep. At 37.9 kilometres the Channel Tunnel
possesses the longest undersea portion of any tunnel in the world,
although the Seikan Tunnel in Japan is both longer overall at
53.85 kilometres and deeper at 240 metres below sea level.
The tunnel carries high-speed Eurostar passenger trains, Eurotunne
Shuttle roll-on/roll-off vehicle transport--the largest in the world--and
international rail freight trains. The tunnel connects end-to-end with the
LGV Nord and High Speed 1 high-speed railway lines. In 1996 the
American Society of Civil Engineers identified the tunnel as one of the
Seven Wonders of the Modern World.
Itaipu Dam
Date started:January 1970
Date finished:May 5, 1984
Location:Paraná River, between Brazil and Paraguay
The Itaipu Dam is a hydroelectric dam on the Paraná River located on the
border between Brazil and Paraguay. The name "Itaipu" was taken from an
isle that existed near the construction site. In the Guarani language, Itaipu
means "the sound of a stone". The American composer Philip Glass has
also written a symphonic cantata named Itaipu, in honour of the structure.
The dam is the largest operating hydroelectric facility in terms of annual
generating capacity, generating 94.7 TWh in 2008 and 91.6 TWh in 2009,
while the annual generating capacity of the Three Gorges Dam was
80.8 TWh in 2008 and 79.4 TWh in 2009. It is a binational undertaking run
by Brazil and Paraguay at the Paraná River on the border section between
the two countries, 15 km (9.3 mi) north of the Friendship Bridge.
Panama Canal
Date started:January 1, 1880
Date finished:January 7, 1914
Location:Isthmus of Panama
The Panama Canal is a 77 km ship canal in Panama that joins the Atlantic
Ocean and the Pacific Ocean and is a key conduit for international
maritime trade. Built from 1904 to 1914, annual traffic has risen from about
1,000 ships in the canal's early days to 14,702 vessels in 2008, measuring
a total 309.6 million Panama Canal/Universal Measurement System
(PC/UMS) tons. In total over 815,000 vessels have passed through the
canal. One of the largest and most difficult engineering projects ever
undertaken, the canal had an enormous impact on shipping between the
two oceans, replacing the long and treacherous route via either the Strait
of Magellan or Cape Horn at the southernmost tip of South America. A
ship sailing from New York to San Francisco via the canal travels
9,500 km well under half the 22,500 km route around Cape Horn.
Golden Gate Bridge
Date started:January 5, 1933
Date finished:May 27, 1937
Location:Golden Gate Strait, north of San Francisco, California, U.S.
The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate, the
opening of the San Francisco Bay into the Pacific Ocean. As part of both
U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1, it connects the city of San
Francisco on the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula to Marin
County. The Golden Gate Bridge was the longest suspension bridge span in
the world when it was completed in 1937, and has become one of the most
internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco, California, and of the
United States. Despite its span length being surpassed by eight other
bridges since its completion, it still has the second longest suspension
bridge main span in the United States, after the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge
in New York City. It has been declared one of the modern Wonders of the
World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. The Frommers travel
guide considers the Golden Gate Bridge "possibly the most beautiful,
certainly the most photographed, bridge in the world.
CN Tower
Date started:February 6, 1973
Date finished:June 26, 1976, tallest freestanding structure in the
world 19762007.
Location:Toronto, Ontario, Canada
The CN Tower is a communications and observation tower in Toronto, Ontario,
Canada. Standing 553.3 metres tall, it was completed in 1976, becoming the
world's tallest free-standing structure and world's tallest tower. It held both
records for 34 years, or one-third century, until the completion of the Burj
Khalifa in Dubai and Canton Tower in Guangzhou. It remains the tallest free-
standing structure in the Western Hemisphere, a signature icon of Toronto's
skyline, and a symbol of Canada, attracting more than two million international
visitors annually.
Its name "CN" originally referred to Canadian National, the railway company that
built the tower. Following the railway's decision to divest non-core freight
railway assets, prior to the company's privatization in 1995, it transferred the
tower to the Canada Lands Company.

span required, the materials at hand, and the type of load anticipated - pedestrian, vehicular, railroad, or a channel of water as in aqueducts. Primitive bridges Other than the clapper bridges of England and similar spans surviving in other countries, bridges dating from prehistoric periods are rare. Bridges of twisted vines and creepers found in India, Africa, and South America, the ancient cantilevers of China, Kashmir, and Japan, if any survive, or the wooden arches of Japan may be candidates for World Heritage listing because they perpetuate primitive ingenuity and craft technology that is important to recognize. Since some of their materials cannot be original, these structures will have to pass the test of authenticity. In 51 BC, during the Gallic War, Caesar attested to the construction of narrow wooden bridges by

The Forth Bridge

Forth Bridge The Forth Bridge is a cantilever railway bridge over the Firth of Forth in the east of Scotland, to the east of the Forth Road Bridge, and 14 kilometres (9 mi) west of central Edinburgh. It is often called the Forth Rail Bridge or Forth Railway Bridge to distinguish it from the Forth Road Bridge. It was opened on 4 March 1890. The bridge connects Scotland's capital city, Edinburgh, with Fife, leaving the Lothians at Dalmeny and arriving in Fife at North Queensferry; it acts as a major artery connecting the north-east and south-east of the country. Described in the Collins Encyclopaedia of Scotland as "the one immediately and internationally recognised Scottish landmark", it may be nominated by the British government to be added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Scotland. The bridge and its associated railway infrastructure is owned by Network Rail Infrastructure Limited. Until 1917, when the Quebec Bridge was completed, it was the

in serious safety hazards. The houses and shops were no longer inhabited, and in the early 18th century a system of traffic was developed to maintain order on the busy structure. The mayor of London asked that bridge passengers travel in particular directions, creating the system of traffic that still remains in place in London today. The history of the London Bridge structure in place today began in 1967 and was opened by Queen Elizabeth II on March 17th, 1973. The modern bridge has sleek lines and is adorned with red lights. Guests travelling to London may choose to make a stay at the London Bridge Hotel, or possibly visit the bridge Monument to the Great Fire of London or the Monument tube station. No matter how you choose to spend your time viewing the London Bridge, the contrast of a modern thoroughfare to the ancient bridges that it has replaced creates an intriguing tourist experience.
