Temperate deciduous forests, woodlands and shrub

Temperate deciduous forests, woodlands and shrub Tartu 2008 Location: Temperate forests are typical of all European continent, the Eastern region of Asia (in special, Chinese and Japan) and North America. Also are finded in tempered areas of South America. Climate: The average temperature in temperate forests is 50° F. Summers are mild, and average about 70° F, while winter temperatures are often well blow freezing. The average yearly precipitation is 30-60 inches. This precipitation falls throughout the year, but in the winter it falls as snow. There are four seasons in this biome, with warm summers and cold winters, often snowy. In autumn, the leaves change color and fall from the trees. The leaves decay on the forest floor, so the soil is very rich. Because of this, and because of the long growing season, many deciduous forests have been cut down for farming purposes. Plants: Trees of this biome include hardwood...

establishment of a continuous tree canopy which would prevent further grass growth. Prior to European settlement aboriginal land use practices, including fire, influenced vegetation and may have maintained and modified savanna flora. It has been suggested by many authors that aboriginal burning created a structurally more open savanna landscape. Aboriginal burning certainly created a habitat mosaic that probably increased biodiversity and changed the structure of woodlands and geographic range of numerous woodland species. It has been suggested by many authors that with the removal or alteration of traditional burning regimes many savannas are being replaced by forest and shrub thickets with little herbaceous layer. The consumption of herbage by introduced grazers in savanna woodlands has led to a reduction in the amount of fuel available for burning and resulted in fewer and cooler fires.

Squirrel and chipmunk

More than 200 squirrel species live all over the world, with the notable exception of Australia. The most common European squirrels are red or brown color, while common American squirrels are grey or black. The tail is long and typically very-very bushy. Squirrels weight between 14 gramms and 1 kilo. The tiniest squirrel is only thirteen centimeters long from nose to tail, but the Indian giant squirrel is almost a meter long. Squirrels are commonly seen everywhere from woodlands to city parks. Though they are terrific climbers, squirrels do come to the ground in search of food such as nuts, acorns, berries, and flowers. They also eat bark, eggs, or baby birds. Some of the species hibernate and some don’t. Squirrels can live 5 to 10 years in the wild. Some can survive 10 to 20 years in captivity.

Ireland

To the east of Ireland is the island of Great Britain. The Republic of Ireland covers five- sixths of the island. It is a parliamentary democracy and a republic. It is bordered to the northeast by Northern Ireland, which is a part of the United Kingdom, and is otherwise surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean: particularly, the Irish Sea to the east, St George's Channel to the southeast, and the Celtic Sea to the south. The population of Ireland is estimated to be 6.2 million. Thick woodlands covered the island until the 1600s. Today, it is the most deforested area in Europe. Twenty-six mammal species are native to Ireland, with some, such as the red fox, hedgehog and badger, being very common. Others, like the Irish hare, red deer and pine marten are less so. In 1801, Ireland became a part of the United Kingdom. A war of independence in the early 20th century led to the partition of the island, creating the Irish Free State, which became

Estonia

The flag became associated with Estonian nationalism and was used as the national flag when the Declaration of Independence was issued in 1918. During occupations, the flag has been banned several times. In a good, snowy winter, the Estonians' favourite leisure activity is probably skiing. In spring, Estonians often leave the cities for the weekends. Many families have a cottage in the countryside. As approximately half of Estonia is covered with woodlands and wetlands, going for long walks in the wild is also very popular among Estonians. Since a forest is seldom farther away than a half-an-hour's drive, people often go there for a mushroom hunt, to watch the beautiful wildlife or just for a relaxing walk. Regardless of their age or whether they live in a city or the countryside, an important weekend ritual for many Estonians is the Saturday sauna. Christmas time is the most important holiday celebrated in Estonia. Like in other Nordic

" I killed the call and went back to my former spot to wait for Cary to wrap things up. In the lull, my mind tormented me. Where was Gideon now? What was he doing? Would Monday bring me an inbox full of photos of him with another woman? Sunday afternoon I borrowed Clancy and one of Stanton's town cars for the drive out to the Vidal estate in Dutchess County. Leaning back in the seat, I looked out the window, absently admiring the serene vista of rolling meadows and green woodlands that stretched to the distant horizon. I realized I was working on Day 4 After Gideon. The pain I'd felt the first few days had turned into a dull throbbing that felt almost like the flu. Every part of my body ached, as if I was going through some sort of physical withdrawal and my throat burned with unshed tears. "Are you nervous?" Cary asked me. I glanced at him. "Not really. Gideon won't be there." "You're sure about that?" "I wouldn't be going if I thought otherwise
