South Pole expedition

Terra Nova Robert Falcon Scott born in seaside Devon, United Kingdom in 1868. In the 1889, he was promoting to lieutenant in the British Navy. First journey to Antarctica was discovering in 1901-1904 with Ernest Shackleton. In 1098, he married with Kathleen Bruce and in 1909 born son Peter. Scott was a hero in England because he made a trip to Antarctica but no one had yet reached the South Pole so Scott was ready to be first. When Scott was 25 years old, he purchased a whaling ship with name on it Terra Nova. For the trip to South Pole, they packed the ship tightly. For the South Pole expedition British had in their ship many animals like Siberian dogs and ponies. They bring 10 ponies to the Pole but they didn`t know that they going to die. When they bring them, to the Antarctic they helped British but in South Pole not. Scott followed the route mapped by Ernest Shackleton in 1909. This means that it involved several

by filter feeding through baleen. Adult blue whales have no predators except man. Their food ranges from microscopic plankton to very large animals. Some whale species like Orchas ( who are called ,, killer whales") may eat their friends, family- other whales. Some species of large whales are listed as endangered, because of the hunters. They have been hunted commercially for whale oil, meat and baleen since the 17th century. Current whaling nations are Norway, Iceland and Japan and the aboriginal communities of Siberia, Alaska and northern Canada. In the 1900's , over 2 million whales were slaughtered. Many environmental organisations are working hard now to preserve and propagate the valuable whales we have remaining in waters all over the world.

Humpback whale

Distribution and migration Is found in all the world's oceans. Most populations of humpback whales follow a regular migration route. They are summering in temperate and polar waters for feeding. They are wintering in tropical waters for mating and calving. Status Because their feeding, mating, and calving grounds are close to shore and because they are slow swimmers, the humpback whales were an easy target for early whalers. The International Whaling Commission (IWC) gave them worldwide protection status in 1966, but there were large illegal kills by the Soviets until the 1970's. It is believed they number about 30,000- 40,000 at present, or about 30-35% of the original population. Thank you for listening !

decided to return. In 1797 Merino sheep were brought to Australia, booming the number of sheep quickly. There was a huge demand for their wool and by 1850 there were 13 million sheep in New South Wales. By then, half of the wool woven in Britain came from Australia/Tasmania. In 1798 George Bass and Matther Flinders proved Van Diemen's land was seperate from the mainland. The first settlers arriving in Van Diemen's land arrived in 1803. There was a whaling industry in the Bass Strait in the 19th century. Shipbuilding also grew up in Hobard in the mid19th century. In 1825 Tasmania was seperated from Australia for administrative purposes and transportation ended in 1853. Soon tin was discovered and a new industry grew. The population of Tasmania grew fast. The University of Tasmania was founded in 1890. In Tasmania, Whites killed many Aborigines during the 'Black War' of the 1820s. Others died of diseases

USA keskosaks on valdavalt stepialad. Metsad paiknevad ka suurte järvede ja mäestike ümbruses

The British were determined to learn from their mistakes and a British officer, William Congrieve, began work on developing even bigger and better rockets. Within a few years Congrieve had developed 14 kg iron rockets that could be fired over 3200 m. These rockets were successfully used against Napoleon in the battle of Waterloo and during the US War of Independence. By the 1889s other applications for rockets were being developed. They were used for signalling, for whaling, and even for rescuing people from sinking ships. If a boat got into trouble near to the shore, a rocket with a thin rope tied to it would be fired out over the boat; survivors in lifeboats could use the ropes to pull themselves ashore. These traditional rockets are still used as distress signals on boats and planes. However, in the 1920s and 30s a great leap forward in the use of rockets took place with the introduction of liquid fuel. This made rockets much more powerful

long distances by deep sea currents. Whales James S. Robbins has argued that the advent of petroleum-refined kerosene saved some species of great whales from extinction by providing an inexpensive substitute for whale oil, thus eliminating the economic imperative for open-boat whaling. Alternatives to petroleum In the United States in 2007 about 70 per cent of petroleum was used for transportation (e.g. petrol, diesel, jet fuel), 24 per cent by industry (e.g. production of plastics), 5 per cent for residential and commercial uses, and 2 per cent for electricity production. Outside of the US, a higher proportion of petroleum tends to be used for electricity. Alternatives to petroleum-based vehicle fuels Alternative fuel vehicles refers to both:

The cetology of MobyDick is the zoological classification and study of the properties of whales (i.e. cetology) introduced by United States author Herman Melville in his 1851 novel MobyDick. Although the novel is a work of fiction, Melville included sequences of chapters concerned largely with an objective discussion of the properties of whales. The observations, voiced through the narrator Ishmael, were largely drawn from Melville's own firsthand experiences in whaling in the 1840s and include observations of various species from the order of Cetacea. The chapters in which Melville discusses whales in a scientific manner, though connected with the story of Captain Ahab and the Pequod, are often omitted in abridged versions of the novel. Melville's observations are not a complete scientific study, even by standards of the day. Nevertheless, because of the general lack of knowledge
