Ancient document, written on parchment, papyri and vellum can hardly be qualified as books the way we understand the word today. Centuries went before paper replaced parchment and papyri. In the 15 th century Johann Gutenberg invented a mechanical process of duplicating texts, which we today call book printing. The first book was printed between 1444 and 1446, so these years can be considered as the beginning years of book printing. His most important preserved printings are the 40 copies of the Bible. By the end of the 15 th century there were about 1000 print-shops in Europe already. The oldest Estonian book dates back to 1535.

It is the only published novel written by Oscar Wilde and also considered as a classic gothic horror fiction with a little bit of philosophy in it. I decided to read this book in Estonian, because I have two books in this language available at home. The book I read was published by Eesti Päevaleht in 2007 and it consists of 184 pages. The story is centred on Dorian Gray, a young man of great beauty and on his portrait, painted by Basil Hallward. From my point of view, I think that Wilde wanted to teach us a lesson about being too conceited and having such a high opinion of oneself. It is well known that nobody gets away without punishment. The book has a slightly depressing undertone because Holdens thougts about the situation he was in and his surroundings were often very gloomy. The lousy hotel where he stayed was probably the gloomiest part of the book. The author uses slang and repeats often same words which is essentially quite similar to something that a teenager would do. This does not make, however, the text duller but makes it more lifelike. What surprised me was that even though it is about 60 years old but still alot of today's young people face similar problems as did Holden. Like not knowing what to do with one's life. At first it seemed to me that it was just a random part of someones life. While reading the book I got often bored and couldn't understand what was so special about it and why it is so famous. Book report The book I read is called "Life At The Top" written by John Braine. It is a continuation to a novel "Room At The Top". It is all set 20th century, England. The main characters are Joe Lampton, an ambitious man of humble origins, his gorgeous upper-class wife Susan, two children Harry and Barbara. Barbara is Joe´s dearest treasure. Harry is a lot like Joe he wants to please everybody and he wants so be his own master, too. Dorian if any of them were true. When Basil reaches Dorian's house, Dorian shows Basil the picture and tells that all this is his fault. He stabs Basil to death and gets rid of the body. Meanwhile, the picture gets older and older. Dorian starts going to shady places and one night he meets Sibyl's brother, who recognises Dorian. He promises to kill him, but Dorian claimes not to be the same person. How could he? There is no way that a man could maintain a certain look for almost 20 years and not get older. After that, Dorian decides to get his life back on track, but the picture still gets older day by day. He gets frustrated and stabs a knife into the picture. That way Dorian Gray dies an awfully old man laying on the floor, a knife stabbed to his heart. But the man on the picture is young again. I think the book is good an excellent way of extending our vocabulary by reading. Two

Estonians has strongly tried to keep alive their own nationality, independent that Estonia is a very small state in comparison with other states. Thanks to the Tartu peace treaty, liberty war, finally public achieved to their state a freedom. Republic gives to people feeling that they are free inside and outside to express their own opinion on many subjects. Anyway if I live in Republic I should have to be a chance to express my opinion.
