Art of Healing: present and future

catch a cold sometimes. Nothing can prevent accidents to happen. The people who are ill or some kind of an accident has happened to them need help. Medicine is the science and art of healing. It is a science because it is based on knowledge gained through careful study and experimentation. Medicine develops very quickly. Nowadays the doctors can do almost anything they want. Egyptian doctors began to specialize in 2500 B.C. At that time they were already quite skilful. When a man lost a limb there was a big possibility that he would lose too much blood and die or get a blood poisoning before that time. Now the doctors can help people who have been in very serious car accidents for example. They can even replace blood with blood substitutes for a short time until they find the right blood type for the patient for the blood transfusion. This can save many lives. There are very many different pills that help with smaller problems like a headache or a bad tooth

Christopher Columbus

Christopher Columbus Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, a port city in Italy, in 1451. This is the name we know him by today but his actual name is Cristobal Colon in Spanish, or Cristofero Colombo in Italian. He first went to sea at the age of 1465 at the age of 14. He was a deck boy and he had to clean, cook and mend clothes. By the age of 30 he was an experienced sailor and a skilful navigator. He had made many journeys to the South Atlantic from his home the Madeira Islands. He also sailed to Bristol and Galway. Many people believed that he had also sailed to the north of Iceland in 1477. During those visits Columbus heard stories about life to the west of Europe. His ambition to find the shortest and safest sea route to the riches of the Far East started to grow. Gradually he worked out his plan to reach the East by sailing west.

others goals to either score a point over the bar or goal. The ball used in Gaelic football is round, slightly smaller than a soccer ball. The action is fast and furious, and play is rough. another famous field sport is hurling - It's played on a large field with a curved wooden stick (or "Hurley"), and with a leather ball, so its pretty much like a hockey on a field , mission is to score the ball between the opponents goalposts. It can be described as one of the fastest and most skilful field games in the world and it's not for the faint of heart. Bodies bang, the ball is as hard as a baseball, and the sticks are made of solid ash. flag and religion The Irish tricolor flag was created in 1848, it was designed to reflect the country's political realities. Different sources tell different stories but here are 2 of them. Orange stands for Irish Protestants, green for Irish Catholics and the white stripe for the hope that peace might eventually be reached between them.

The architect was just fixing the cross on the steeple, when the espionage shouted out that is was Olev. The poor man realized that he had lost his fee, slipped and fell to death from atop the tower. How did the weather vane Old Thomas get its name In the medieval times, there was a hand bow competition held every spring. It took place in the Parrot's Garden and it was meant for only the most skilful archers. The competitors had to shoot down a wooden parrot, which was placed on top of a high pole. One year all the vying knights were all gathered at the shooting line, the parrot suddenly fell to the ground, pierced by an arrow. The sharpshooter turned out to be a poor boy called Toomas. The annoyed contestants told him to place the parrot back on the top of the pole. Everyone was impressed and the story about Toomas spread quickly

The Saxons & Vikings

The Danes were of the same Germanic race as the Anglo-Saxons, but they still lived in tribes, were pagans. The Danes were well armed with long swords, spears, daggers, axes, bows, iron helmets & chain armour. Their ships were sailing-boats, but they were also provided wiht oars. The sails were often red & blue & green. At the prow of the ship there was usually a carved dragon's head which rose high out of the water. The Danes were bold & skilful seamen. The word ,,Vikings" probably means ,,pirates" or ,,the people of the sea inlets". At first they only raided & plundered. Came in spring & summer, burnt churches and monasteries, loaded their ships and returned home. London itself was raided in 851. The Danes were successful, because the Anglo-Saxons had neither a regular army nor a fleet, no coastguards, so the raiders could appear unexpectedly. There were few bad roads, so it took several weeks to send

Great Britain, consisting of England, Scotland and Wales, is 350 miles across at its widest point and 600 miles long at its longest. It has got beautiful beaches, bays, inlets, cliffs and rocky headlands. England features mostly low hills and plains. Its coastline is 3200 km long. The Pennine Chain splits northern England into western and eastern parts. There are many rivers and lakes (Lake District for example). The whole of England resembles a park in the hands of a skilful landscape gardener. Scotland covers about one-third of Great Britain. It has large areas of untouched and wild landscapes. Britain's highest peak, Ben Nevis (1343 m) lies there. Scotland may be divided into the Lowlands and the Northern Highlands. The Great Glen, cutting across the Highlands, is a string of lochs and canals, including Loch Ness and the deepest lake in the UK Loch Morar (310 m). Wales is also a mountainous country. Its border to the east with England still roughly runs along

in January 1788. Sydney grew from that first British penal settlement. Transportation of convicts to New South Wales ceased in 1840, but continued to Western Australia in 1868. About 160 000 convicts arrived in over 80 years. The convicts were mostly poor townspeople. Only few of them were from wealthier classes. The building of a new society based on these people was an outrageous challenge. The most cunning and skilful of the convicts became later the founders of prominent colonial families. Until 1830s the convicts were harshly punished for almost no reason, flogging being the most common penalty. During the 1850s, the settlement was boosted by gold rushes. Gold was first found at Bayhurst in 1851. Scarcity of labour (tööjõupuudus), the vastness of the bush, and new wealth based on farming, mining and trade all contributed to the

ESTONIAN SYMPHONIC MUSIC. THE FIRST CENTURY 1896-1996.

The drama reaches its conclusion with a hopeless fade out. There is no struggle in this movement, only the opposite pair of thought and emotion has been brought forth. The composer doe not synthesise anything.1 The prominent Estonian musician Tuudur Vettik (1898-1982) remarked: The Symphony is characterised by the successful construction of form and thematics; a dominating melodic line and inventive harmony express the creative process of the composer. All this takes shape in fine and skilful orchestration which sounds fresh and captivating. 2 The Second Symphony (Stockholm, 1946) shows Raid’s interest in modern trends of contemporary music. The symphony was not performed and Raid turned his attention to chamber music.3 The composer did not, however, follow the 12-tone system. Reflecting the oppressive spirit of the age, grief for homeland, and dimness of the future the work is atonal with dominating dissonant harmony. The common mood is

occasionally betray himself to a close observer. Wherever I thought that that was the case, I tried to guess the meaning of the signs. A hundred times I may have done so in vain, but at last I triumphed.. . . When copying an instruction to the Duke [de Estrada], I discovered little dots, like full stops, behind two signs of cipher. As interpunction is never used in cipher of this kind, the dots could only be signs of abbreviation. But even abbreviations (a skilful writer would never have made use of them) offer so many difficulties that they can be employed only on the most common occasions, as, for instance, V. A. for Vuestra Alteza, or n.f. for nuestra fija, or nuestro fijo. From obvious reasons [in this case], I decided in favor of "nuestra fija," and inferred further that the preceding signs must correspond to "princesa de Gales." The breach was opened, and before three o'clock in the next morning I
