warming, methodologies are proposed placing emphasis on the increasing probability of infrastructural instability triggered by natural hazards resulting from groundwater-level (GWL) variations. These effects are expected to be particularly serious in coastal regions because of the influence of the rising sea level resulting from global warming. The influence of sea-level rises (SLR) will become apparent along with land subsidence because groundwater abstraction will become severe in coastal regions. Additionally, the probability of earthquake liquefaction increases if GWL rises in accompaniment with SLR. Using case histories, we examined the possible occurrence of these natural hazards as a result of global warming. Finally, possible countermeasures and adaptation strategies for reducing and mitigating infrastructure damage accelerated by global warming are described for each case in specific regions. In

Education Education is so multifaceted that it is difficult for me to know where to begin discussing it, or how to prioritize the many factors. Relaying my own experience is easy: I had a standard classroom approach, supplemented by inordinate reading. In only the briefest and least memorable instances did I receive any individual tutoring. Education is commonly thought of as the job of schools. Adults cry "educate our children!" Everyone has opinions about the best way to do the job. To set the stage for Strawson's objections, I shall merely note that whereas Russell thought in terms of sentences taken in the abstract as objects in themselves, and their logical properties in particular, Strawson emphasized how the sentences are used and reacted to by human beings in concrete con- versational situations. Russell's most famous article (1905/1956) was called "On Denoting," and in it denoting was taken to be a relation between an expression, considered in abstraction, and the thing that is the expression's referent or denotatum. Strawson's title was "On Referring," which he meant ironically, because he thought of referring not as an abstract relation between 20 Reference and referring an expression and a thing but as an act done by a person at a time on an occasion.
