by many ex-footballers turned television pundits. The meetings also saw the institution of `soccer' as a potential abbreviation for `Association Football' comparable to `rugger' in rugby, again igniting a debate currently raging as a result of football's increased popularity in America (also home to American Football, a.k.a. Gridiron). On a practical level, the meetings led to the inauguration of the first coded match (see the section below on Rules) between Sheffield and Nottingham (now Notts County), and the subsequent foundation of Nottingham Forest FC in 1865 and many other clubs across England. The FA Challenge Cup followed in 1871 with great success and Aston Villa director William McGregor eventually mooted the concept of a league competition in 1888 in collaboration with 11 other clubs. Initially set up as the Football League, with a 50-50 split between the North and the Midlands on one side

Paljud suuremad riigid asuvad Inglismaa äärealadel ehk mere lähedal ja meri on kindlasti üks põhjustest miks linnad asuvad seal kuna vee lähedus on tähtis linnade kujunemisel. Palju mõjutab ka pinnamood, näiteks on Londonis ja selle ümbruses on pinnamood tasasem kui põhjapoolel.

The Channel Tunnel, near Folkestone, directly links England to the European mainland. The English/French border is halfway along the tunnel. London is by far the largest English city and one of the largest and busiest cities in the world. Birmingham is the second largest. A number of other cities, mainly in central and northern England, are of substantial size and influence. These include: Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Newcastle, Sheffield, Bristol, Coventry, Leicester, Nottingham and Hull. England features mostly low hills and plains. the Lake District in the north- west features some of England's most beautiful landscapes, and includes Scafell Pike at 978 m, the highest point of England. There are also some important rivers in England and the most significant ones are Thames, Severn (the longest river in Great Britain) and Avon. The flag of England is a red cross on a white background. It is also on the Union Jack.

of the young". Trudgill (2001) approaches the question with an apparent reserve and justifies his point of view in practical terms; the present sociolinguistic conditions are not favourable for EE to spread in the whole of the UK. First of all, London is not the only large urban centre; therefore it has not exclusive rights to influence the speech in all the regions of the country. Next, such centres as Belfast, Dublin, Cardiff, Glasgow, Newcastle, Nottingham, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol have been reported to focus the accents around them. And last but not least, "There is no parallel here to the nationwide network of residential Public Schools which gave rise to RP." The last argument has been challenged by Parsons (1998: 63-64): "there seems to be no need for this, if EE grows on the substrate of RP. If at one time in the future

ASPECTS OF BRITISH HISTORY

During the Hundred Years’ War (1337–1453) the English Crown lost all its possessions in France. These losses led to further isolation of the Anglo- Normans from France and their complete assimilation. A Reading Passage Every schoolchild knows the story of Robin Hood, which grew out of Saxon hatred for Norman rule. He is a legendary folk hero. According to the legend, Robin Hood lived with his band of ‘merry men’ in Sherwood Forest near Nottingham as a criminal or ‘outlaw’. He stole from the rich (the Normans) and gave to the poor (the English), and he stood up for the weak against the powerful. His weapon was not the sword of nobles and knights, but the longbow, the weapon of the common people. He was constantly hunted by the local sheriff but never captured. 46 In fact, most of the story is legend. The only thing we know is that a man called Robert or ‘Robin’ Hood was a wanted criminal in Yorkshire in 1230

Keelefilosoofia raamat

David Kaplan once maintained (in a 1971 lecture) that there is at least one real-world example of this type that favors the CausalHistorical Theory over Searle's account of referring: the name "Robin Hood." It seems historians had discovered that there really was a person who (causally) gave rise to the Robin Hood legend. It turns out, though, that that person was not poor, he lived nowhere near Sherwood Forest, he was not an outlaw (in fact, he and the Sheriff of Nottingham were fairly close), and his name was not even "Robin Hood." On the causalhistorical account, this makes perfect sense. 9 This move would also help with two similar problems: the names of future individuals ("Let's try to have a baby, and if we succeed its name will be `Kim'"); and the names of abstract objects, such as individual numbers, which have no causal powers. You should wonder why, if the relevant causalhistorical chain originated in
