Hemingway A Farewell to Arms (themes, motifs, symbols)

Reunited, they plan an idyllic life together that promises to act as a salve for the damage that the war has inflicted. Far away from the decimated Italian countryside, each intends to be the other's refuge. If they are to achieve physical, emotional, and psychological healing, they have found the perfect place in the safe remove of the Swiss mountains. The tragedy of the novel rests in the fact that their love, even when genuine, can never be more than temporary in this world. Motifs Motifs are recurring structures, contrasts, or literary devices that can help to develop and inform the text's major themes. Masculinity - Readers of Hemingway's fiction will quickly notice a consistent thread in the portrayal and celebration of a certain kind of man: domineering, supremely competent, and swaggeringly virile. A Farewell to Arms holds up several of its minor male characters as examples of fine manhood. Rinaldi is a faithful friend and an oversexed womanizer; Dr

cruelty to others as well as to each other throughout the play; gender relations, which are displayed in Kate's final speech, where she explains the place of women in relationships with men (pages 158-159); male perceptions of women, which are shown when the Lord tells his servant how to behave as a woman (Induction: Lines 110-121) and male dominance is seen as Petruchio used different tactics to physically tame Katherine to show his superiority. Tone, setting, motifs The action in the induction takes place in the English countryside, first on a heath in front of an alehouse and then in a bedroom in the house of a lord. The action in the play takes place in various locations in Padua, Italy, and at a house in the nearby countryside. The overall tone of the play is light and comic, though the exploration of larger social questions gives much of the comedy a more serious tone.

Celtic Mythology / Keldi Mütoloogia

Gaels and Brythonic tribes of Great Britain and Ireland) left vestigial remnants of their forebears' mythologies, put into written form during the Middle Ages. Though the Celtic world at its apex covered much of western and central Europe, it was not politically unified nor was there any substantial central source of cultural influence or homogeneity; as a result, there was a great deal of variation in local practices of Celtic religion (although certain motifs, for example the god Lugh, appear to have diffused throughout the Celtic world). Inscriptions to more than three hundred deities, often equated with their Roman counterparts, have survived, but of these most appear to have been genii locorum, local or tribal gods, and few were widely worshipped. However, from what has survived of Celtic mythology, it is possible to discern commonalities which hint at a more unified pantheon than is often given credit

returned to Estonia where Tartu became his main place of residence, and where he began to teach drawing. At the end of his life he was no longer able to carry on his work due to serious lung disease. He also destroyed one part of his invaluable works during hysteric attacks. He died at the age of forty-six in Tartu neural clinic. At the time "Valgjärv" (1916-1917) was painted, the artist painted mostly in South Estonia and in connection with that there occurred a change in his choice of motifs. The former intimate views of a small part of the scenery were replaced by wide panoramas with lakes on the background of distant hills. The "Valgjärv", in which the ultramarine woods and blue lakes from a striking contrast to the reddish hills beaming the heat of summer sun, is one of the most beautiful pictures of that kind landscape. The artist's glance rises from the surface of the earth towards the sky, discerning there, as often as not, another landscape formed of white clouds.

Kalevipoeg with Rauds pictures was reissued in 1975. To an average Estonian Kristjan Raud is primarily known as the illustrator of the national epic and as an advocate of national romantic art ideas in the 1930s when quite different winds were already blowing even in the remote European province of Estonia. Characteristic of Estonian folklore Kristjan Rauds work contains very few light and playful undertones. The image of a singing Kalevipoeg is one of the most joyful motifs in the artists entire work. More than 40 drawings and sketches picture Kalevipoeg as a triumphant giant standing on a hillside and singing to his brothees. In Rauds work Kalevipoeg is a joyous king forever young like the dream of ancient country people who wish for a crowned king of their own: a king never crowned. In the spring of 1940, shortly before the forceful incorporation of Estonia into the Soviet Union, the last prewar art event tok place in Estonia the year of Kristjan Raud

Taj Mahal

The exterior decorations of the Taj Mahal are among the finest to be found in Mughal architecture. As the surface area changes, a large pishtaq has more area than a smaller one, and the decorations are refined proportionally. The decorative elements were created by applying paint or stucco, or by stone inlays or carvings. In line with the Islamic prohibition against the use of anthropomorphic forms, the decorative elements can be grouped into either calligraphy, abstract forms or vegetative motifs. Interior The interior chamber of the Taj Mahal steps far beyond traditional decorative elements. the inlay work is not pietra dura, but lapidary of precious and semiprecious gemstones. The inner chamber is an octagon with the design allowing for entry from each face, though only the south garden-facing door is used. The interior walls are about 25 metres high and topped by a "false" interior dome decorated with a sun motif. Each chamber wall has been highly

somewhat melancholic companion to its forerunners. In the developmental process the subsidiary theme has been fully transformed into a grave, massive and forceful brass sound. The main theme appears tumultuously. The second monothematic movement is a quiet, wistful unison-monologue for bassoon and violoncellos. The composer’s free meditation, sounds like a compound of different interwoven, increasingly strenuous, motifs. The former loneliness and sadness has been replaced by inner tranquillity: Example 21. The Finale is based on a theme, an ancient melancholic Estonian tune, with variations: Example 22. The composer is attempting to rid himself of bleak thoughts. The sixth variation (the last) is transferred into the major key; so the joyous folk tune Once when I was still young entry is sustained in a dance-like form. A brilliant final chord has been reached.

Poe supported the agrarian democracy. The agriculture of Virginia has been declining for decades, because tobacco had exhausted the land. the archetypes, to create dramatic experiences that are recognizable to everyone. Becoming aware of the archetypes can only expand your command of your craft. ARCHETYPES A S FUNCTIONS W h e n I first began working with these ideas I thought of an archetype as a fixed role which a character would play exclusively throughout a story. Once I identified a character as a mentor, I expected her to remain a mentor and only a mentor. How ever, as I worked with fairy tale motifs as a story consultant for Disney Animation, I encountered another way of looking at the archetypes — not as rigid character roles but as functions performed temporarily by characters to achieve certain effects in a story. T h i s observation comes from the work of the Russian fairy tale expert V l a d i m i r Propp, whose book, Morphology of the Folktale, analyzes motifs and recurrent patterns in hundreds of Russian tales.
