distribution that would later bear his name: "Pareto's Law," or "the Pareto Distribution." It is more popularly known as "the 80/20 Principle." Pareto demonstrated a grossly uneven but predictable distribution of wealth in society--80 percent of the wealth and income is produced and possessed by 20 percent of the population. He also showed that this 80/20 principle could be found almost everywhere, not just in economics. Eighty percent of Pareto's garden peas were produced by 20% of the peapods he had planted, for example. In practice, the 80/20 principle is often much more disproportionate. To be perceived as uent in conversational Spanish, for example, you need an active vocabulary of approximately 2,500 high-frequency words. This will allow you to comprehend more than 95% of all conversation. To get to 98% comprehension would require at least ve years of practice instead of ve months. Inglise keele stilistika

Style The term style is a polysemantic one. The latin word ,,stilus" meant a writing instrument used by the ancients for writing on waxed tablets. Already, in classical latin the meaning of style was extended to denote the manner of expressing one's ideas in written or oral form. One of the abts/the best was given by Jonathan Swift: ,,Proper words in proper places." In present- day english, the world style is used in about half a dozen basic meanings. 1. the characteristic manner in which a writer expresses his ideas. ESTONIAN SYMPHONIC MUSIC. THE FIRST CENTURY 1896-1996.

The maritime climate is temperate, summers are warm and winters mildly cold, the average annual temperature is 5 degrees Celsius and the average annual precipitation is 550 millimetres. The most important assets of the soil are oil shale, phosphorite and peat. The designation “Aestii” was first mentioned by the Roman historian Tacitus in “Germania” (98 AD). By the end of the first millennium the people of Western Europe referred to the land of our ancestors with the name Estonia (derived from Germanic languages and means East). The Estonians, our Finno-Ugric forefathers settled here in approximately 5,000 BC from northern Russia and the Urals, as fishermen and hunters. They called themselves “rural people”, the term “Estonians” started to spread three centuries ago, taking firm root in the middle of the 19th century. From the 13th century onwards the ancient Estonians had to continually fight

Cats

AMBER AND RUSSET - LATE COLOUR CHANGE GENES Copyright 2014, Sarah Hartwell The ancestors of the domestic cat were nondescript black/brown striped tabbies. Over the centuries, mutation produced a wide array of colours based on 2 different pigments. Eumelanin gives the blacks, browns and blues while phaeomelanin gives the reds, fawns and creams. A few other genes give further variations on those colours such silvers, colourpoints and solids/selfs. Mutations continue to occur and unexpected colours also turn up due to inbreeding where recessive genes, hidden for generations, start showing up. AMBER AND LIGHT AMBER During the 1990s, some purebred Norwegian Forest Cats in Sweden produced chocolate/lilac and cinnamon/fawn offspring. However, those colours are not found in the purebred Norwegian Forest Cat gene pool. Had the gene pool become polluted by someone, perhaps generations ago, breeding their Norwegian Forest Cat to another breed? Was it a spontaneous mutation? Crossing of those c

CHANGE YOUR THINKING CHANGE YOUR LIFE

“The only true measure of a theory or idea is your ability to make accurate predictions of the future based on it.” The good news is that the ideas and principles you are about to learn have been tested and proven in the lives and experiences of millions of people. In themselves, like any principles of nature, they are neutral. Nature plays no favorites. Nature treats everyone alike. Whatever seed you plant in the ground, nature will grow. Whatever thought seeds you plant in your mind, nature will grow as well. It is entirely up to you. ■ CHOOSE YOUR THOUGHTS Successful people are those who think more effectively than un- successful people. American Literature

Drawing upon his travel experiences and his life as a farmer, Crevecoeur was the first to seriously attempt a definition of American character with his Letters. The key word for Crevecoeur was "new," which separated and distinguished Americans from things European. In Letters, Crevecoeur thus blended his collection of facts and observations into a fictional portrait of an industrious farmer, one whose natural response to the land became identified with the general character of a new American people. Yet while Crevecoeur echoed Jefferson, Thomas's agrarian ideals, his letters also acknowledged the realities of frontier savagery and southern slavery. After taking a post as a French consul in 1783, Crevecoeur published little in English, though he did publish a French revision of Letters (1787) and a final book on his American experiences: Voyage dans la Haute Pensylvanie et dans l'état de NewYork (1801).

TheCodeBreakers

Since radio signals are heard best when the receiver points at the transmitter, sensitive antennas can find the direction from which a signal is coming by swinging until they hear it at its loudest. If two direction-finders take bearings like that on a signal and a control center draws the lines of direction on a map, the point at which they cross marks the position of the transmitter. Such a fix can tell quite precisely where, for example, a ship is operating. Successive fixes can plot its course and speed. To exploit this source of information, the Navy in 1937 established the Mid-Pacific Strategic Direction-Finder Net. By 1941, high-frequency direction-finders curved in a gigantic arc from Cavite in the Philippines through Guam, Samoa, Midway, and Hawaii to Dutch Harbor, Alaska. The 60 or 70 officers and men who staffed these outposts reported their bearings to Hawaii, where Rochefort's unit translated them into fixes. For

No other European country can boast its resources of coal, iron, gas, and rich agrarian land. Almost three-quarters of its area is agricultural land, more than half arable. Though the quality of legendary black earth deteriorated during the Soviet decades, it remains among the best globally. The country has some oil and conventional gas, and perhaps more importantly, possesses as much as 4 percent of global coal reserves. THE CAPITALIST NIGER

Let us not delude ourselves: our work ethics leave a lot to be desired. We prefer the comfort of guaranteed jobs to the adventure of deciding our own future. We prefer others to establish the company so that we come in and cry racism when they refuse to hire us. Why can’t we establish the company, let others come in and cry racism for us not hiring them? This book is not about separatism. Being a Capitalist Nigger does not involve asking for a separate land area for Black people; it does not involve asking all Caucasians to get out of Africa; it does not involve asking others to stop doing business in our neighbourhoods. It is not about calling people names. It is not about taking up arms to slaughter innocent people. However, if we agree to the Biblical teaching that all men are created equal, then it behoves us to understand that being a Capitalist Nigger means

Education

to see how things really are, must do what we can to help the less fortunate. Obligation to help. How can a rich person help a poor one? By giving some money? Well, can smart, or educated people give education to those needing it? Sometimes just taking the time to discuss things with troubled people is a great favor and aid. I don't have much surplus money to give to worthy causes, yet donate my time freely. I don't pretend to be able to educate in general -- but do know enough about plant life in Seattle to be valuable teaching that. I suppose I could share my plant knowledge with a single student, or several, and it wouldn't make much difference to me. The whole role of apprenticeship and master-apprentice needs to be expanded beyond its present confines of carpentry, masonry, electricity, and the like. It is true all of us are genetically capable of only so much; that our upbringing and education can be the same yet we turn out differently because of our genes

cities. No country attempted to advance this concept more than France at the end of the 16th century, where a national transportation department of architects and engineers was set up, responsible for designing bridges and roads (Ponts et Chaussées). This corps of specialists gave the Neo-Classical period a range of monumental and elegant bridges on rivers as the Loire (Blois, Orléans, Saumur) and the Seine in Paris. This model spread all over Europe, producing large monumental urban bridges in capitals such as London, Saint Petersburg, and Prague. In Italy, Bartolomeo Ammannati evolved a new form for the Santa Trinità Bridge - a peculiar double-curved arch whose departure from an ellipse was deliberately concealed by a decorative escutcheon at the crown. Its 1:7 rise-to-span ratio resulted in an elegantly shallow, long-arch span widely adapted in other bridges of the Renaissance. The bridge was reconstructed using original

He drew on his World War II experiments with anti-aircraft systems that anticipated the course of enemy planes by interpreting radar images. 1949 Maurice Wilkes assembled the EDSAC, the first practical stored-program computer, at Cambridge University. His ideas grew out of the Moore School lectures he had attended three years earlier. For programming the EDSAC, Wilkes established a library of short programs called subroutines stored on punched paper tapes.
