Bridges presentation

Long, elegant, elliptical arches, piers half their former widths, special machinery for construction, and the introduction of an architectural motif used until the 1930s, the open parapet with turned balusters, completed this outstanding bridge. Widened in the 1950s, its original appearance was carefully maintained. Another masterpiece of the French Classical style is the Pont de Bordeaux of nineteen arches, more than 1640ft (500m), completed in 1822. Figure 5 Pontypridd Bridge (1756) over the Taff in South Wales (UK), had to be rebuilt several times until its builder, William Edwards, got the correct rise-to-span ratio to ensure that the 140ft (43m) arch would not collapse after removal...

Money

I think many people do not know where this idea came from, and why money is valuable. As I know thousand years ago, money was not used. People who wanted to exchange something found that it was sometimes difficult to find someone who had exactly what they wanted and who at the same time wanted exactly what they had to exchange. In order to make exchanges easier, the circle of exchanges widened from two parties to three or more. A had what B wanted; B had what C wanted; C had what A wanted. In this way, indirect exchanges began to develop. Eventually, the most marketable or saleable of these goods acquired the function of money, a medium of exchange. Many goods have served as money. Money is an important social institution. A complex society simply could not function without some kind of common medium of exchange. Money also allows...

Kuressaare castle

A year before the castle had been sold to the Knighthood of Saaremaa for 3,000 roubles During 1904-1912 the convent building was renovated by architects W. Neumann and H.Seuberlich. The two upper floors of the Defence Tower were constructed anew; the window frames in the cloister of the main floor were restored and the wall between the chapel and the festive refectory rebuilt; some of the doors were relocated and windows widened; new ovens and staircases were built; stone plates with the coats-of-arms of the local noblemen were mured into wall of the cloister. In 1968 extensive restoration works were started and carried out on the basis of the plan made by K. Aluve. I recommend all to visit Kuressaare Castle, because it is a fascinating historical place for adults or children....

London topic

During the reign of Elizabeth I, the first map of L was published and the Globe Theatre built. Many people perished In the Plague (1603) and in the following Great Plague (1664-1665). It was ended by the Great Fire on Sept 2, 1666. It destroyed many houses and churches including St Paul's, and the Royal Exchange. However, the Fire meant that the City could be improved. The streets were widened and the houses were built of stronger materials. Sir Christopher Wren rebuilt 53 of the destroyed churches. Soon the rich people lived in the West End and the workers suffered in terrible poverty in the East End. The first horse-drawn omnibus was imported from Paris in 1829 and the same year witnessed the formation of the Metropolitan Police. 3 The first railway ran from London to Greenwich....

Videvik(kogu raamat Inglise keeles)

Suddenly Rosalie, his blond and breathtaking sister, turned to look at me. No, not to look -- to glare, with dark, cold eyes. I wanted to look away, but her gaze held me until Edward broke off mid-sentence and made an angry noise under his breath. It was almost a hiss. Rosalie turned her head, and I was relieved to be free. I looked back at Edward -- and I knew he could see the confusion and fear that widened my eyes. His face was tight as he explained. "I'm sorry about that. She's just worried. You see... it's dangerous for more than just me if, after spending so much time with you so publicly..." He looked down. "If?" "If this ends... badly." He dropped his head into his hands, as he had that night in Port Angeles. His anguish was plain; I yearned to comfort him, but I was at a loss to know how. My hand reached toward him involuntarily; quickly,...

Jää-ajast Inglise keeles!

But again it grew colder and the ice sheets moved southward. Again it grew warmer and they melted back. Twice more the ice moved slowly southward and twice more it melted back. During the great Ice Age much of Europe, too, was covered with ice. On both continents the ice sheets left many calling cards behind them. They made deep scratches in the rock they moved over. They cut tops of hills and widened valleys. They pushed along great piles of soil, which remained behind when the ice melted back. They left huge boulders perched in places where only moving ice could have put them. The ice sheet also covered Estonia. The Estonian hills were formed of the soil piled up by the ice sheet. The direction of our oblong hills clearly shows the direction in which the ice moved. The tens of thousands of boulders of all sizes and shapes that are sc...

Psühholoogia bioloogiline-, kognitiivne- ja sotsiaalne vaade

Results showed that the participants recalled more words that were semantically processed compared to phonemically and visually processed words. The theory is an improvement on Atkinson & Shiffrin's account of transfer from STM to LTM. The levels of processing model changed the direction of memory research. It showed that encoding was not a simple, straightforward process. This widened the focus from seeing long-term memory as a simple storage unit to seeing it as a complex processing system. Craik and Lockhart's ideas explain why we remember some things much better and for much longer than others. This explanation of memory is useful in everyday life because it highlights the way in which elaboration, which requires deeper processing of information, can aid memory. Despite these strengths, there are a number of criticisms...

I'm not used to delegating, but I'm sure I'll pick it up quick." I was instantly at ease. "I'm eager to be delegated to." "Having you around is a big step up for me, Eva. I'd like you to be happy working here. Do you drink coffee?" "Coffee is one of my major food groups." "Ah, an assistant after my own heart." His smile widened . "I'm not going to ask you to fetch coffee for me, but I wouldn't mind if you helped me figure out how to use the new one-cup coffee brewers they just put in the break rooms." I grinned. "No problem." "How sad is it that I don't have anything else for you?" He rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. "Why don't I show you the accounts I'm working on and we'll go from there?" The rest of the day passed in a blur. Mark...

ESTONIAN SYMPHONIC MUSIC. THE FIRST CENTURY 1896-1996.

The Baltic-Germans suffered a defeat as their privileged position dwindled in society. The Young Estonia movement’s interest in social affairs continued to grow, they protested against the First World War; however, the movement broke up in 1916. This was due to the harsh conditions created by the war, limited publishing opportunities, and internal differences of opinion. Their activity had widened the horizon of Estonian intellectuals, extended literary links with Europe and heightened aesthetic awareness. Eduard Vilde continued as Estonia’s prominent novelist, even in the midst of a new generation of writers that included Anton Hansen Tammsaare and Mait Metsanurk (1879-1957). In poetry, Tuulemaa (Land of the Winds, 1913) by Gustav Suits was innovative both in thematics and form: reflections on Man, homeland, world and univ...

US-ART - American Art Revision Materials, I

Cultural agencies promoted Abstract Expressionism as a symbol of America's leadership in fine arts. The impression of Soviet Union's Socialist Realism weakened realist art even more. Contemporary realism was no longer the academic realism of C19. Abstraction increased the role of formal structure, Expressionism stimulated free and emotional manner and Surrealism widened the sources of inspiration. "Magic Realists" opposed abstract art by a realism of style, not of content. Exemplary artist. Andrew Wyeth (mid-C20). He worked in dry-brush watercolor and tempera. His themes included loneliness in nature and the outdoors, and nostalgia. His technique was meticulous and clinically direct. He strived for the verisimilitude of the photograph. His paintings display social and psychological tension and the sava...
