Ameerika kirjandus alates I maailmasõjast kuni tänapäevani.

,,From whom the bell tolls" Hemingway. Spanish civil war. Franco vs the Republicans. Three days are described. Protagonist is Robert Jordan. American, but teaches Spanish, joins the Spanish guerillas-the spanish partisans, in the fight against the facist. He is wounded and left to die. We get this sense of betrayal-most powerful emotions. The bell tolls for everybody, the bell is symbolically the funeral bell, it conserns everybody. The message of the novel is presented through inner monologue. When jordan joins the war agains facist, he wants to fight all tyrannia and improve social conditions, he has all the typical features of Hemingway heroe, tough, competent, brave. Seems to be against all forms of governments, comes to conclusion that the republicans way is the best. He finds communism helpful. The question is wheter bloodshed is justified and humane. Unlike earlier hemingway heroes Jordan is an intellectual

through the right eye will be projected to the right hemisphere. They developed a laboratory-testing device and experimented with the sense of vision and touch of the monkey. They concluded that the two halves in the split-brain monkey had separate memories and could perform separate tasks. This was also tested on human participants, whose brains had been spilt to relieve epilepsy. Test results show that speech is localized in only one half of the brain. So when the patient was shown an image that was projected to his or hers left hemisphere of the brain he or she could easily identify the object. But when it was shown so it would be projected in the right hemisphere, the participant could not verbally identify the object, although he or she could point out what it was, if cards with different words were shown. This evidence implicates that the language processing happens mainly in the left hemisphere of the brain

Republicanism: The doctrine of republicanism asserts a system of a government that is elected by the people of the nation. The roots of this ideology go back to ancient Greece, when the concept of a democratic government was examined by philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle. Individual Liberty: "Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness" developed as the motto of this era, which forms the cornerstone of the U.S. Constitution today. Since the colonies had very few individual rights, they declared certain fundamental rights that they deemed "inalienable

Congo-one of the darkest places on earth. (Africa-dark continent) Story: white European Charles Marlowe is in charge of a ferry boat on Congo, meets Kurtz, who is trading ivory, very expensive, made illegal in some countries for now, keeps the local in fear. Later on he dies and Marlow returns to tell the story. Critique in colonialism: On one level, then, Heart of Darkness is a scathing critique of colonialism. It takes place at a time when there were mere hints that colonialism was not working as it should. It was a time that appeared on the surface perhaps to be the height of Empire, a time to be bullish about colonialism in Africa. Kurtz as Nietzschean Superman- Kurtz is another strong person, that uses the Negroes because they are weaker than him - in fact he is considered like a god by them for his nature- and that loves this country for the same reason as Marlow and also because he can be seen like a god and live
