The English Patient

· Almásy is not English. He is Hungarian by birth. Almásy's manner is knowledgeable and reflective. Almásy is not a highly dynamic character, he is intriguing and mysterious figure. He is portrayed in a sympathetic light. He was part of a British archaeological group and also as afterwards reveals a spy. · Hana was a twenty-year-old Canadian Army nurse. She put all of her energy into caring for the English Patient. When the hospital was abandoned, Hana refused to leave and instead stayed with her patient. She sees Almásy as saint like and with the "hipbones of Christ". She falls in love with the English Patient in a purely non-sexual way. She also cut off her hair and she didn't look anymore to mirrors. · David Caravaggio was friend of her father. He was Canadian thief and also a spy.

Rational Use of Diagnostic Tests

Rational Use of Diagnostic Tests

Rational Use of Diagnostic Tests Screening tests Diagnostic tests are often used to screen asymptomatic patients and identify risk factors for occult disease. Screening tests should be generally noninvasive, inexpensive, and of minimal risk to the patient. Screening tests should have high diagnostic sensitivity, which means few false negative results would be expected, as the goal of testing is to rule out the presence of disease. Screening tests should be used to screen for diseases that (1) have serious consequences if left undetected, (2) are reasonably prevalent within the population, and (3) have treatment options readily available. Should a positive result be obtained, a more accurate, confirmatory test should then be performed.

Kokkuvõte: "What makes a good leader?"

Nevertheless good leaders have to remember that they don't know everything. There are general characteristics that good leader should have. Bill George thinks also that leadership is not about skills, but about leaders character. He said that it is important to have sense of purpose, passion and mission. Daisy Wademan Dowling said that good leaders need empathy and they need to be teachers. Good leader also needs to be patient, optimistic and reliable. Good leader knows how to communicate well and is a good listener. It is important that leader surrounds himself/herself with like- minded people. Dave Ulrich, the founder of the RBL group, thinks that good leader is like a good parent. He added that people have looked for leaders as individuals for many years. An individual becomes a great leader because of the skills, of the knowledge, of the ability.

What is integrated care?

Further details of our integrated care work can be found at: www.nuffieldtrust.org.uk/integratedcare Acknowledgements Our thanks go to Richard Gleave, Diane Gray, George Kissen, Dennis Kodner, Judith Smith and Sarah Smyth for their comments, all of which have helped to shape both the structure and content of this report. 3 What is integrated care? `Integrated care' is a term that reflects a concern to improve patient experience and achieve greater efficiency and value from health delivery systems. The aim is to address fragmentation in patient services, and enable better coordinated and more continuous care, frequently for an ageing population which has increasing incidence of chronic disease. The search for ways to integrate care more effectively is a pressing policy concern. But what do we actually mean by `integrated care'

Should Mercy-killing Be Punished?

when it is possible, there is also known mercy-killing, the act of killing someone who is suffering painlessly. It is argued, when mercy-killing should and when it should not be punished. On the one hand, mercy-killing should be punished when it is carried out by people who do not have a license for euthanasia. Not everyone is capable of deciding over someone's life. For example, even doctors do not always know if a patient is really dying. On the other hand, mercy-killing should not be punished when it has a permission of a court. This way all aspects would be taken under advisement by many people, considering the advisory opinion. In conclusion, mercy-killing should not be punished only if it is thought through by many specialists who find that it is the only way. Mercy-killing is the last alternative of all.

Decriminalizing Cannabis in Estonia

Decriminalizing Cannabis in Estonia

(Gable, American Scientist 2006, 94). Third reason why Estonia should decriminalize cannabis is that our doctors are afraid to write out descriptions for patients for the use of medical marijuana. By the law they are allowed to do so, but no doctor in Estonia has had the courage to write out the description for it. That leads the patients to go on the Black market in search of cannabis, which makes them criminals in the eye of law. The patient can never be sure of the quality of the cannabis he or she is buying in the Black market, with the description the patient would receive marijuana which is controlled and pure. For many seriously ill people, medical marijuana is the only medicine that relieves their pain and suffering, without debilitating side effects. But the good news for Estonian patients is that within last year there have come out many new cannabis-

bad ones. That's what friendship means. The purpose of my article is to describe my friendship. To begin with, friendship is not made overnight, it took years for us to become friends. We had known each other for over four years but then we did not socialize with each other. We started to interact more after fifth grade. Now we have been friends for seven years. Secondly, the best words to describe my friend are helpful, confident, cautious, patient, tolerant all the qualities that a friend should have. He listen me if I have complicated situations and supports me in every way when it is necessary. Lastly, I am glad that I have a friend in my life. We are not only friends at school but we see each other when we have free time. Then we just hang around, watching movies or playing computer games. In conclusion, friendship is an important part of our life. Friends help to make up with problems and are always there for us

Shutter island review

Shutter island review Shutter island is a movie written by Martin Scorsese. It is a very psychological film in my opinion and you can not take your eyes of the screen for a minute, because then you will lose track. I think Leonardo is very good in this role and these kinds of movies suit him. I did not like the movie so much because there is a lot of talking and little action in my opinion. Some of the parts were very well executed, for example the part where Teddy realises he is a patient in the hospital. The movie was good becasue you could not tell what was going to happen and the ending was unexpected, that is what is diffrent from other movies. I have once seen this film before and then iI thought it was much more boring because I was younger and could not understand the point of the film. It still is confusing and I think the film gets more logical with time or when you watch it over and over again. I would suggest is to people my age and older.

For example, when you go study abroad alone, without your parents and friends, you have to be very patient, because this is unknown place for you. All of this may distract your life in future. Furthermore, studying abroad has also some disadvantages. You need money for food, living and also for traffic and travelling. You may have to go work to pay bills and use public transport. D. In the 1700's European cities began to build hospitals. They were charity hospitals for the poor and sick, as the rich people were treated at home. The early hospitals were dark, crowded and very dirty, so it was very likely to be infected even more, when you went to be cured. The first hospital in Estonia was the hospital of Saint John, first mentioned in 1237. It was for the people who had leprosy. 2.2 Recent developments Many scientific advances have helped to improve patient care. Surgical and intensive care units now use electronic equipment. Modern hospitals are full of advanced equipment such as X-ray machines, ultrasound scanners and life-support machines. Computers help hospitals keep laboratory and medical records. Hospitals use many disposable items for safety such as plastic thermometers, and hypodermic syringes and steel needles. They are used only once, so they cannot spread infection. Scientists

My future career

Of course, much will depend from my exams result. So now I'm trying to learn as much as possible to pass them well and go into medical university. I understand that this profession requires great responsibility because it deals with the most precious thing that a man has - his health. I want to help people who have problems with their health. I like take care for people. I know that doctor should be attentive to people, honest, smart and kind. Also I think a doctor must be patient and easygoing. A doctor who is selfish and dishonest can't be good at his profession. I will try to do my best to develop good traits in myself. And of course, I would like that my patients always have been healthy and happy. My parents advised me to be a doctor too and I think this is correct. At the same time, helping people and giving them my knowledge, care and attention, I think that I will also receive a good salary. I hope that this will be so, because the doctors are always in

Book Report: The Spare Room

I read a book called The Spare Room. It is written by Helen Garner who is an Australian writer and journalist. She was born on 7th November in Geelong and now lives in Victoria. This novel has won several awards and that's one of the reasons I chose to read it. The Spare Room talks about a 64-year woman Helen who lives in Melbourne, Australia. One day, her friend Nicola who lives in Sydney calls and asks if she could stay with her for three weeks. The reason she calls is that she is a cancer patient who needs to be taken care of. As they have been friends for a long time, Helen gave her consent and welcomed Nicola in her home. In Melbourne Helen also has a treatment in an institution called the Theodore. Chemo hadn't worked on her and that is why she is looking for new options to heal though the cancer is already in stage four. In that institute she gets weird kind of treatments, for example administring loads of vitamiin C which makes her sick and puts her through terrible pains.

The highest result of education is tolerance

It is actually very sad. I am rather sure that those people do not think about how they may hurt others with their sayings caused by their intolerance. So do you remember my question at the beginning of the speech? Why do we need to tolerate weird kids at school? I hope by now you have figured out that because they may turn out to be rich and successful one day. But in all seriousness my grandma once said to me: `'Oh, my child, never be mean to people, tolerate them, be patient and kind. Even to those who you do not agree with. That makes you better and smarter.'' I have lived by those words. And I think every person in this world should. After all, the highest result of education is not only about having good grades. It is about having an open-mind with the people around you during the process of your education, about how much you have learned from others. Today, I think I have proved the accuracy of Mrs. Keller's quote quite well. I hope you all

The King’s Speech

For Prince Albert this was the worst nightmare because he was unconfident and unstable because of stammering. He knew very well that almost the only role the king has is to speak to his people something he was unable to do. After inviting several doctors to the Palace his wife introduced him with an Australian speech therapist Lionel Logue. Lionel was an ordinary man, but with unconventional approach - he started to call Prince Albert as Bertie, refused to visit his patient at his Palace etc. However the special speech exercises and gradually strengthening friendship with Lionel helped King George VI to get back his confidence and ability to give speeches. His radio- address where he led his country to the war became a turning point. Winston Churchill has been saying earlier in the film that "when Germans will come, we would need a king we can all stand behind". After this radio-address George VI became such a king for his country.
