Trafalgar Square

Nelson's Column is in the centre of the square, surrounded by fountains designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1939 (replacing two earlier fountains of Peterhead granite, now at the Wascana Centre and Confederation Park in Canada) and four huge bronze lions sculpted by Sir Edwin Landseer; the metal used is said to have been recycled from the cannon of the French fleet. The column is topped by a statue of Horatio Nelson, the admiral who commanded the British Fleet at Trafalgar. The fountains are memorials to Lord Jellicoe (western side) and Lord Beatty (eastern side), Jellicoe being the Senior Officer.[2] On the north side of the square is the National Gallery and to its east St Martin-in-the-Fields church. The square adjoins The Mall via Admiralty Arch to the southwest. To the south is Whitehall, to the east Strand and South Africa House, to the north Charing Cross Road and on the west side Canada House. At the corners of the square are four plinths; the two northern ones were intended for

Britain history.

By the end of her reign the nation was the most powerful in the world and by the 1920s the British Empire comprised about a quarter of the world's territory and population. Victoria had nine children, who eventually became the monarchs of many European countries like Russia, German, Sweden and Greece. After Prince Albert's death Victoria withdrew from most public appearances for years. She put much effort into planning and building a series of memorials to her husband. During the last decades of her life she once again involved herself in state and political matters. Britain also took part in the Crimean War (1853-1856). The British part in this war, to halt Russian expanding into the Balkans, was appallingly planned and executed. Hospital conditions though were atrocious: there was no room for all the patients. Florence Nightingale was the first woman to run a field hospital in Turkey during the Crimean War. She later set up

single kingdom. Subsequently, in 1801, Great Britain united with the neighboring Kingdom of Ireland, forming the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. When five-sixths of Ireland seceded from the United Kingdom in 1922, the state was renamed the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. 1.2 National Symbols and Nation Building The nation is visible through its symbols (flags, anthems, emblems), ceremonies (national days, sporting events), monuments (memorials, buildings, national museums), the land itself (landscape), its borders (insiders and outsiders) and the capital city. This assumption is illustrated by the fact that all nations, in order to be accepted internationally, must have a certain number of characteristics. The nation is usually known by six essential elements: a name, a capital city, clearly defined borders, a national flag, a national anthem and a national day. (Scott, 2000) Every nation needs a main sign to represent it

the electric lights at some point so the visitors can get a sense of the pure blackness of the lighdess cave. Perhaps our ancestors used a similar dramatic technique in their cave rituals, putting out the oil lamps and torches so the young initiates could experi ence the deep dark. For some it would be terrifying, for others, soul-expanding, and some might be visited with visions that made them feel connected to the animals or the powers that made the world. Perhaps the paintings are memorials of those visions, amended and painted over by successive generations of initiates. Emerging from a cave is another hazardous passage, climaxed with the feeling of relief upon emerging into sunlight and open space once again. For some there is a feeling of transformation, of having died in some sense down there, or having come very close to death and other eternal forces, and now coming to new life on the surface.
