· Edwin Abbott Abbott(1838-1926)was an English
clergyman and writer.He was born in London. He wrote
several theological works and a biography (1885) of
Francis Bacon, but he is best known for his Shakespearian
Grammar (1870) and religious allegory the Flatland.
William Blake
· William Blake (1757­1827) was an English poet, philosopher and
artist.He was one of the most extraordinary personalities to emerge
during the period of Romanticism. He believed that spiritual reality
lies hidden behind the visible world of the senses and he attempted to
create a symbolic language to represent his spiritual visions. He began
printing his own illustrated poems in colour in 1787. The first example
was Songs of innocence(1789). Towards the end of his life, he joined a
circle of younger artists who appreciated his remarkable powers. It
was not until the late 19th century that Blake's work achieved general
attention. He was extremely prolific and his prints, illustrations, and
paintings can be found in several important public collections in
England and the USA.
Agatha Christie
· Agatha Christie (1890-1976)was an English detective story
writer.As an extraordinarily popular author, Christie
wrote over 80 books, most of them featuring one of her two
famous detectives; Hercule Poirot, an egotistical Belgian,
and Miss Jane Marple, an elderly spinster. He has written
stories likeThe Murder of Roger Ackroyd (1926), Murder
on the Orient Express (1934), Funerals Are Fatal (1953),
The Pale Horse (1962), Elephants Can Remember (1973),
and Curtain (1975). Her plays like The Mousetrap (1952),
is one of the longest-running plays in theatrical

Gerald Durrell
· Gerald Durrell(1912­1990)was a British novelist
and poet.His life in Greece and Egypt provided
inspiration for most of his writing. His major
work is the inventive tetralogy,The Alexandria
Quartet:Justine (1957), Balthazar (1958),
Montolive (1958), and Glea (1960). His Collected
Poems appeared in 1980.
William Golding
· William Golding (1911­1993) was an English
novelist. He achieved fame with his allegorical
debut novel Lords of Flies (1954).He has written
novels like The Spire (1964) and the trilogy :The
ends of the Earth (1991).He received the Nobel
Prize in literature.
Joseph Conrad
· Joseph Conrad (1857­1924) was a British novelist
and short-story writer. His eventful years as a
ship's officer in Asian, African, and Latin
American waters gave an exotic angle to many of
his novels. He was a central figure in the
development of literary modernism. His major
works are Lord Jim(1900), Heart of darkness
(1902),Nostromo (1904),The Secret Agent (1907),
and Chance (1914).
Rudyard Kipling
· Rudyard Kipling (1865­1936) was a British
writer. His Barrack Room Ballads and Other
Verses (1892), which includes the poems "If" and
"Gunga Din", is a classic text of British colonialist
literature. He has wrote novels like The Light that
failed and Kim.He wrote many children's stories,
including The Jungle Book (1894), the Just So
Stories(1902), and Puck of Pook`s Hill(1906).
Kipling was the first English writer to receive the
Nobel Prize in literature (1907).
Beatrix Potter
· Beatrix Potter(1866­1943) was an English
children's books writer and illustrator.
Potter created the characters of Peter
Rabbit, Jemima Puddleduck, Squirrel
Nutkin and others. Her first animal stories
were The Tale of Peter Rabbit (1901) and
The Tailor of Cloucester (1902).
Terry Pratchett
· Terry Pratchett(1948)is an English writer. Pratchett's first novel was
The Garbet people (1971).The Colour of Magic (1983) was the first
novel in his series of comic fantasies about life on Discworld, a planet
which travels through space on the back of four elephants. The
Discworld novels have sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. He
has written Mort (1987) and Soul Music (1995). She has written

William Shakespeare
· William Shakespeare (1564- 1616) was a British poet and
playwrighter.He is often considered the greatest writer in world
literature. By the year 1594 he was a rising playwrighter in London
and an actor in a leading theatre. The order in which his plays were
written and performed is highly uncertain. His history plays are based
on the lives of the English kings, including Henry VI . He has written
the world known tragedy Romeo and Juliet. The plays written
between 1596 and 1600 are mostly comedies, including The Merry
Wives of Windsor and As You Like It, and histories, including Henry
IV and Julius Caesar. He wrote the comedie All's Well That Ends
Well and a great tragedies Hamlet, Othello and Macbeth. His later
written tragedie is Antony and Cleopatra. Shakespeare retired before
1610 and lived as a country gentleman until his death. The first
collected edition of his plays was published in 1623.Very little is known
about his life and work.
George Bernard Shaw
· George Bernard Shaw(1856­1950) was a dramatist and
critic. He wrote plays.Although many of his plays were
comedies, they often expressed political and philosophical
ideas. His first play was Widower`s Houses (1892). Arms
and the Man (1894) was Shaw's first publicly performed
play. Plays such as Man and Superman (1905) and Major
Barbara (1905) were first performed at the Royal Court in
London. Pygmalion (1913) was turned later into the a
musical My Fair Lady (1956). In 1925, Shaw received the
Nobel Prize in literature.
