Do you consider yourself more functionalist or more conflict theorist?  Please explain why? Functionalism and conflict theory are very different views of society, but they are not exactly opposites. Both have arguments, that make people think about the society they live in and both have theorists who critize each other. In my opinion, none of the theories are completely wrong but I do tend to agree with people on the conflict theory side. Firstly, functionalism ignores inequality and focuses too much on the positive functions in society. For example racism, functionalists will say that it must be imporant in order to exist as long as it has but in my opinion that sounds quite doubtful. The most problematic part about racism is above all the tension and conflict which comes with it. Seems to me, that functionalists ignore the negative sides which society has on people. Secondly, I agree that society will always be in conflict because of fighting for limited resources and their rights. I think it is in our human nature to get the best for oneself and therefore in many areas, competition is inevitable. Functionalists act like all parts in society are equal and there is little talk about individualism, which might explain, why they ignore conflict between different groups. People   differ   from   each   other   financially,   mentally   and   physically   and   they   all   want   best   for themselves   which   in   my   opinion   leads   to   competing.   For   example,   human   behaviour   in functionalism is shown as being shaped by the social system but in spite of most people being socialised into traditional gender norms, people develop other identities and keep up the levels of criminality, even though they are taught to obey the law. All in all, both theories have their ups and downs and I believe people could argue about which is right forever. As well as people are different, they also develop different views of society and it is hard to prove some theory completely right.

funtionalist and conflict theory

The functional and the conflict theory have been two opposite schools of thought regarding the concept of society. Their final aim is to study and analyze the dynamics inside the society and to understand and explain what is stratification and why it occurs. In this essay I’m briefly going to explain why I agree more, even if not completely, with the conflict theorists than the functionalists. While functionalisms has a holistic view of society, conflict theorists acknowledge the presence of groups and individuals and their needs that might be different from society’s needs. Since the functionalists view the society as an organisms where every part works together, they think that consensus and collaboration are the base on which the whole society stands. I think, as the conflict theorists, that this view is utopian since there cannot be a society without any type of conflict.

and Horne: `meaning', `values and norms', `power and authority', `spontaneous interaction' and `networks and groups'. Describe how at least three of these (or other) factors might explain social order, and discuss the extent to which you find the explanations convincing. Introduction For societies to cohere and cooperate, it is necessary for individuals within them to have a predictable and collaborative behaviour. The presence of social order enables individuals to feel more secure publicly, as it enables them to somewhat predict their lives. Social order is also necessary for stability and serves as the basis for collective advancements. There are several theories and explanations for why social order persists and emerges. Hechter and Horne in the reader Theories of Social Order present several widely-acknowledged explanations for social order. In this essay, the explanations regarding a shared meaning, norms and values and power and authority are explained

They treat others as themselves. Rousseau - people in the state of nature were neither good or bad. Man was like an animal not posessing any needs besides the primary ones. The bad habits of men are byproducts of ingaging in a civil society. All men are equal Sovereign Hobbes: can not be overthrown and can do whatever the fuck it wants. The best one is monarch. If anything the contrary complaint rings loudly. What I don't begin to know is the ideal breakdown, according to age, of reading, listening to instruction, and working or hands-on time. What about technology in excess? Before the age of printing and cheap paper, comparatively few people could become learned. Now, theoretically, our electronic age makes learning easier than ever. Well, technology is indisputably better. We can store and retrieve data much more efficiently. We can communicate in a flash. But still, at the basic level, we must be well grounded -- we must possess common sense, civil manners, frank discussion skills, reasoning abilities, and moral fiber. It is possible to be a technological genius, say a computer nerd, without social skills or civil conscience. I'd rather have as a neighbor an illiterate janitor with an easy-going, friendly disposition. Hence, I value what we might call

An analysis of the problem of Political Power - essee

to tell us what we have to do, and if we do not agree we will be punished. We visualize nature condition as a situation where state does not exist and political power do not belong to anyone. In this situation we need to decide how can people live in this kind of conditions. This way we will understand how would the life be without the state and hopefully it will help us to see why do we even need the state. For example Jean-Jacques Rousseau thought that it should have been taken more time to develop from nature condition to the civil society. (Wolff, 1996) Some theoretics say that we have a lot of proofs about how people are managed to live without the state. (Wolff, 1996) Hobbes thought that power is only a way to get what the person wants. To be sure about being successful it needs to get powerful. According to Hobbes to be powerful it is necessary to have good reputation, a lot of money and friends. By the virtue of human wanting power
